What wines should we get and how much?

MellieMoo, 7 November, 2014 at 22:31 Posted on Planning 0 11

Going to do a booze cruise for our free bar. thinking 60 bottles of red and 60 white for 120 guests. We'll also have 4 kegs of beer/ ale/ cider so just need to sort the wine side. We'll have a bottle of red and white on each table for the meal (40 in total) then free bar opens for 5 hours. Do you think this'll be enough? We've got homebrew wine as well. Now just have to work out what wines are the nicest.

That sounds like loads, that's more than one bottle of wine per person, some will of course drink more, but you'll probably find that most people will drink less than that. But, if you have an open bar for 5 hours, I'd much rather have spares than to potentially run out. You could (possibly??) sell anything unopened afterwards?

In terms of which wines, it's surely down to your personal taste - info here https://winefolly.com/tips/buying-wedding-wines/

Thanks for the link, honestly haven't got a clue! I like Chilean myself but it's difficult deciding for so many people.

The advice from my venue was to allow for a mimimum 1 drink per hour per guest. So for your 120 guests for 5 hours you should expect to serve 600 drinks. if you are serving 40 bottles of wine with dinner that will leave you with 80 bottles for your free bar, you normally get 4-5 glasses out of a bottle (or 3 if you live in my house!) so that would be around 320-400 drinks, and then whatever you get out of a keg? I have no idea i'm afraid, but you would need your kegs to serve at least 50. So assuming you will get 50+ drinks out of a keg, you will have enough - especially if you have some home brew as well.

Volume wise you will likely be fine, the only issue for me would be the selection - if I was attending your wedding there would be nothing I would drink! Does your venue have a bar where people can buy other drinks? I only drink rose wine or spirits (ie, cocktails), and I know most of my friends are the same... but then we are all 22 year old girls. You know your guests best so if they will be happy with your selection then go for it, but I would maybe add in a rose wine in addition to your red & white?

It's really difficult to say. I'd drink over a bottle of wine to myself over the course of a whole wedding, but someone else may only drink one or two, or none at all. Personally I'd rather have too much than too little and would keep anything left over for future occasions - you can never have too much wine in your house!

The kegs contain roughly 72 pints. I was thinking two lager, one ale, and one cider. We are considering a couple of bottles of JD, Vodka, and Bacardi with soft drinks as well but honestly that just makes it more difficult so I'd rather avoid if possible. I'd seen online that mobile bars etc generally recommend 1 drink per hour per person so was working off that. The problem is we have sme friends who drink A LOT! and others who drink very little. It could either work out very well, or very bad :-p

We're in the middle of nowhere in a field - the bar is the one we're making haha!

I think your good with the wine quantity - wine is a personal choice but white I like a good pinot gregio as I find chardonay too sickly and pinot gregio is a nice medium. In France I don't suggest buying a cheap white they do not work!

A really nice french red is a cote de rhone - again it's a medium fruity not too dry - aldi sell a bottle that you can pre-try. For french reds you can get away with having a cheaper bottle as long as you air it properly - whenever we go skiing we play the 2 euro game - selecting red wines for 2 euros or less and see what you get - it's quite suprising some bottles are fantastic. A tip from me would be (unless arriving at 9am) go for the wine which is the right price but clearly isn't a full shelf as this shows its popular!

We don't have a bar either and are putting on the information that there will be wine, beer, cider and blackcurrent gin and soft drinks - if you want something special then it's BYOB. Majority of our friends are very happy with this compared to the option of a paying bar.

From looking at wedding packages they usually say 1/2 drinks for drinks reception, half a bottle each at the meal & then a small glass of sparkling wine/champers for the toast. And then whatever people buy for themselves in the evening.

As some others have said its best to have too much than too little. I know from experience of buying booze for our engagement party that we had too much (most people were only having a drink or 2, or brought their own), but I was glad as there would be nothing worse than running out midway through.

I would say you will probably have a few that dont drink beer/wine/cider. For example I dont drink beer/cider and I dont drink wine as it gives me headaches, Im more a vodka girl if I drink. It would be nice if you did provide some bottles of spirits, but if you weren't I would let your guests know, as theres nothing worse than being on soft drinks all night when everyone else is getting drunk & you could have brought your own spirits.

Oh and you should probably get some bottles of rose too (or instead of white/red wine).

And as far as what wines to get, get a couple of different types (like a chardonnay, pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc).

If you are wondering what brands of wine to get, why dont you ask a few guests what they drink, might help to give an idea. Or look at reviews on websites.

Argh I suppose we better get a few bottles of rose as well. Thanks for all the suggestions. Medium whites are a good idea and hopefully then won't be too far off the mark for most people. We're not restricted to french wines though as majestic sells all the same wines as over here but without the UK tax so they are £1 - £5 cheaper than over here Smiley smile

We went to a wedding fayre a couple of months ago who were handing out fizz on the door.

It was delish and asked what it was. They gave us the name but completely forgot about it until I was in Lidl with my mum a couple of weeks ago and found it for £1.25 a bottle! Couldnt believe it!

Just incase anyone was interested ☺

Ahhh ok sorry throught you were limited to french wines.

Good in the middle fruity reds then are tempranillo (spanish red not too dry - generally found in a blend) and my favourite is an argentinian malbec - although they can be quite pricey! The best thing to ask majestics would be a in the middle red - not too harsh in tanins and not too dry - rijocas (sorry can't spell) tend to be quite powerful and for most a fruity drinkable red is better then expensive dry one!
