What would be your ultimate holiday destination and why?

Maxi, 19 June, 2009 at 23:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 37

This is pie in the sky for me for the foreseable but H and I were discussing tonight where we go if money were no object.

My first reply was Colorado - Maine. For the only reason that it is 'one of the places I must visit before I die' and that is only due to my love of Stephen King novels and that most his books are based in Maine so I feel a sort of affiliation for the place.

I should add though that being almost see-through white I am not a beach or sun lover ?

H predictably said his first choice would be Monaco (at Grand Prix time).

Where do you most want to visit, and why?

I've already done it - desperately wanted to go to Malaysia for years and years, to see the orang rehab facilities. We did it in 2007 and also threw in Langkawi, Kuala Lumpa and stayed in Borneo for a while. It was amazing, but the downside is no other holiday will ever match it.

I'd still really love to tour South America, the Inca Trail, Machu Pichu (sp?), as wellas lots of other places in S. America.

Definitely good to have something to look forward to - I know nothing about Maine if I'm honest (for some reason I always think of farming county?) what would your plans be when you get there?

South America, specifically Patagonia. Why? Because of the jagged mountains, deep canyons, lakes, volcanoes, glaciers, penguins, whales, sealions, unspoilt beaches, vast plateaux, wide open vistas, stunning sunsets and, best of all, because it's not completely overrun by noxious tourists, especially the kind usually looking for the nearest British or Irish bar.

Ooh, just to wander around and take in the sights. Drive up to The Rockies. Pass over the border to Canada. Drive and explore really ?

My parents did the Rockies - drove from Calgary to Toronto in a minivan, they did a helicopter trip over the Rockies. This is my mum, who for the first 16 years of my life suffered from Agrophobia, so quite an achievement!

Sounds fabulous, I love just aimlessly wandering / driving around somewhere unfamiliar

But the Rockies are nowhere near Maine - they're on the opposite coast?

My dream trip would be to South America - Chile, Peru and Argentina. I was due to go in August but unforeseen circumstances meant I had to cancel. Not sure when I'll go now...

I don't feel I know enough about the UK to look elsewhere for a dream tour. I'd LOVE to honeymoon (if someone would marry me) amongst the puffins in Lindesfarne. That, or a fab Wainwright holiday in the Lakes. OH and I would also love to visit Jersey for the WWII heriatge. And I think that visiting the Orkneys, the Shetlands, and all that, would be phenomenal.

Maxi - look on the upside - you now have 2 dream holidays to do. One to the state of Maine, where Stephen King bases his books and one to the Rockies!

For me, there are loads of places such as tour of South america, South Africa, Borneo to help with Orang-Utans, but for pure luxury it would have to be Bora Bora - beautiful, away from everywhere, fantastic diving.

There are a few places I would really love to see and we did one of our ultimate holidays for our honeymoon - travelling around parts of Australia. I would definitely love to go back there though as I don't feel I saw everything I wanted to.

I have always wanted to go to Fiji, so that is one. Malaysia and Borneo was the pre baby holiday we were planning that was to be our last blast but I got pregnant before we could sort it out!

I have always wanted to see the Northern Lights as well, so that is on the list. And trekking to Machu Picchu.

One of our dream destinations was Thailand and we went there a few years back but it then made me really want to see Cambodia (particularly Angkor Wat) and Vietnam.

Ok - I really do need to win a big lottery payout!

Loads and loads that I'd like to see, two already mentioned (Patagonia and spending time way up north on some of the Scottish Islands). A cruise to Antarctica (I found this a while ago) or spending some time in Japan.

Other than that it has to be Australia for me as have passed through a couple of times en route to NZ but did not have time to spend in Australia.

I'd love to tour Vietnam and Cambodia, i was a bit obssessed with the Vietnam war during my teenage years and would love to do a bunker tour. I would also love to do a safari in Africa and then go to Alaska and see the Polar Bears.

I've been to Cambodia, it is a wonderful country - fascinating culture and history, wonderful people. Peru and Machu Picchu is this year's holiday in a few weeks too!! We'rve been saving for holidays we really want to go on before having kids. The other places on our ultimate destination list that we want to go to are China, Vietnam and Easter Island. We will be ttc again as soon as we get back from Peru and if this one sticks yey! If not, I'll be crossing off another holiday from the list next summer.

There are so many places we'd love to go where I've never been before - Thailand, India, New Zealand, Grenada, Croatia, the Northern lights...

Places we've been before, but want to do again - spend more time in the Grand Canyon and Californian desert, get a beautiful boat and sail around the Greek Islands, go back to Boston and Conneticut...

I love holidays. By the middle of July, I will have been on 5 holidays this year. ?

I've been SO lucky over the years and I've travelled widely - Australia, The Maldives, China, Ethiopia, USA countless times and most of Europe including Italy, Greece, Turkey, Finland, Austria, Switzerland ...

So my ultimate destination is a bit dull in the sense that I know loads of Hitchers have been there but so far I haven't .... it's Thailand. Somehow we've just always missed it!

I'd also like to go to Hong Kong (although I'm not sure I'd actually enjoy it, I want to experience it) and also New York which, amazingly, we also haven't been to. I mean, I've been to Kentucky, Portland and Albuquerque and never New York?! ?

I too have been really lucky, especially as my last job took me all over the world. Places I've been to, and would I go again?......

New York (fab!) Barbados (would go again but not in a hurry), Jamaica (wouldn't go again) Dom Rep (No way! Not if you paid me), Cancun (maybe?) Orlando (if I have kids), Toronto (yes for city break) Calgary/Banff (defo), Ibiza (Love it!going again next month) Greece (yes) California( yes) Las Vegas (oh yes!) Prague (possibly) Majorca (yes - we go every year), Thailand (would jump at the chance) Maldives (defo) Finland (not Helsinki but would go to see Northern Lights)Bahrain (yes, but only with girlfriends) Dubai (yes) Australia (yes, but not Sydney). ?

Me and H have just from back from a California road trip ending up in Vegas - an ultimate pre TTC trip! I'd love to go the Maldives again but I think my ultimate holiday would be to try somewhere different in Thailand. We loved it last time we went and I would go back in a heartbeat....it's also made me think I'd like to try Vietnam and Cambodia. I'm going to Menorca tomorrow and that's a place I've never been to.

Bizarrely though, one of the places I most want to go to and never been is the South coast of England.

We did this last year on a cruise from Santiago de Chile to Buenos Aires via Cape Horn and the Falklands. It was amazing. Truly stunning scenery, loads of wildlife close up including 3 different types of penguins.

We want to go back and spend more time in Patagonia - we fell in love with Chile.

There are very few places I'd like to visit. I'm really not that into travel.

I'd love to go to New York with H. I've been and it's one of the only places in the States he's never been (he used to go about 12 times a year to different cities) and I know that he'd love it. Ditto Vegas, he's been, I haven't and I really want to go and see Tom Jones live in Vegas. I can't see either of these ever happening though as H can't fly ?

I really want to see more of Italy. If time wasn't an issue I'd love to take a couple of months and drive throughout and visit places like Sorrento, Capri, Portofino, Como, Rome, more of Tuscany. pretty much everywhere. I adore Italy.

Turks and Caicos would also be up there. Parrot Quay in particular but again, will never happen as I wouldn't want to go without MrP.

There are loads of places I would love to go e.g. Namibia, India, SE Asia, Costa Rica, but most of all I would love the chance to go travelling for a long time again - a year or two - and just see where the wind took me. There's nothing like that total feeling of freedom and opportunity.

I'm too old for all that now though. ?

We went to Kenya in January and just got back last week from Egypt. I always wanted to do a Kenyan safari and it was truly amazing. I have been lucky to have been all over the world and am an absolute holiday whore. After having been to Egypt 3 times in 3 years now, I wouldn't go back as it is turning into a bit like Benidorm <---never been but love the TV series LOL

The Maldives are my favourite place followed by Mauritius, Thailand, Bali and Antigua.

I always book last minute for the best deal and have 2 weeks off in October and would ideally like to go somewhere I've never been before but when I start looking I can never decide.

So, having missed out on my Caribbean cruise in January/February due to illness , I would have to say that that would be my ultimate holiday destination as I would love to visit lots of different Carribean islands all in one holiday. Who knows, I may get my wish next year.

We've got 2 really big ones we'd love to do.

    1. Drive through all 50 US states (well, fly to Hawaii obviously). Why? We love the US and would want to get it know it better. Driving through all 50 states, visiting friends and going off the typical tourist trail, it's a dream of ours.

    2. Cruise around the world. We love cruising and to go an around the world cruise, spending months on a ship, lovely!

I've also been lucky enough to start traveling long haul in the last 5 years but due to that, nature & travel programmes and the internet my list seems to be getting longer, not shorter! Top 3 would be:

Australia and NZ for the sights, scenery and must do places to see

Galapagos Islands for the unique wildlife and experience

Las Vegas for the glamour, hotels and Hoover Dam/Grand Canyon although I might be broke at the end of the trip!

But the Maine that Stephen King grew up in and based some of his books in, is Maine the state, not Maine the town.

Anyhoo - I'd love to repeat a 3 week holiday we had touring Maine and Massachusetts. Started in Boston and finished in New York. I'd love to repeat it because when we got to NYC it was so phenominally hot that we did bearly anything, just so energy sapping.

A holiday I've never done and would love to do is to take a motorhome arounds both islands of New Zealand.

Hey long time no see Maxi, how are you doing?

I still can't actually believe that we have just had our dream honeymoon of going to Borneo and whilst there seeing loads of different areas. It was beyond all expectations and if I ever have enough money I'll be going to do volunteer work with the orangutans.

Just to make the trip even better we were privileged to see a mother with her baby and I can't resist showing a picture

My next destination would be Kenya or Langkawi for even more orangs!

I'd love to go to Iceland to see the Northern Lights.

I'm really not a hot weather or beach type person, so the places I'd like to go to I imagine to be clean and fresh, I'd like to tour Scandinavia and would love to visit Tibet.
