what would you advise a newly engaged couple?

I-go-by-many-names, 9 March, 2014 at 13:41 Posted on Planning 0 16

My best friend rang me today to say she and her boyfriend are engaged :-) I'm so happy!!! I am going to send them a card asap but was thinking of giving them some light hearted non patronising tips e.g. 'don't let anyone tell you what to do' (ironic really as that's essentially what I'm doing lol).

So my question is- what piece of advice would you give to newly engaged friends?

Don't rush into anything (supplier wise) until you've looked at a variety and are sure!

Remember that the day is about you two. Have your wedding your way.

Stress on "you two". Get the other person involved.

Yeah, to kind of echo what others have said: don't let the planning detract from why you wanted to get married in the first place. It's so easy to get lost in the practicalities and forget about, you know, love and stuff Smiley smile

This ^^^^^^^ the amount of times I have seen on forums where they come back and say they have seen someone else and wished they hadn't booked who they had. don't rush in to it when choosing a supplier or a dress come to think of it, I have known some brides having 3 dresses Smiley smile

    Learn to love spreadsheets.

This response: "that's a lovely idea, but we already have an idea of what we're after"

this one is handy often too: "no"

Also, don't take it too seriously and try to be laid back. I generally don't find it fun to be honest, I just want all the decisions over and done with. Whenever I think I'm getting a bit stressed I just try and remember that actually most of it doesn't matter at all, it's about getting married (forever hopefully), not the day.

My advice would be to just enjoy being engaged for a while before starting to plan the wedding.

We got engaged at the end of May last year and are getting married in April, I really wish we'd just took a bit of a time before getting caught up in the planning whirlwind!

Someone gave me the advice of buying a totally new perfume for the big day. Then to take the perfume on honeymoon, after just save it for anniversaries/very special occasions then that smell will always remind you and your hubby of your special day. I loved this piece of advice! Me and hubby to be are going to give notice in June and we are going to make a day of it (giving notice, going to get our perfume/after shave, lunch at venue etc) x

It's your day and enjoy the ride. Don't forget the bigger picture and perhaps really think about what you as a couple really want! Hard one huh! And have a fun year ahead! whoop!

My advise is: If you plan on making your own stationary, think about how long you think it will take you. Then times that by ten!!!
