What would you do? I am fuming!

Erin8, 10 September, 2013 at 20:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

Mr Erin and l popped round to our new house tonight to hang some curtains and take done stuff. When we get there we find that some post we left in the hallway that belonged to the tenants that were living there has gone. Neither of us have moved it so logically someone has been into the house! We don't think it's the seller so that leaves the tenants. If it was up to me l would be tempted to call the police, the house belong to us and the tenancy has ended. We are going to get a locksmith round and Mr Erin wants to speak to estate agents so they can speak to the previous owner and tenants.

I would be furious too. But a locksmith will solve ALL. Can you get one as an emergency?

I would be livid too. It does sound as though you need to get the locks changed ASAP. Cheeky feckers!

I would also be fuming and would be getting the locksmith round pronto.

I would also be very interested to hear why the previous owners weren't made to hand over the keys when their tenancy ended (unless they sneakily got a spare set cut).

My thoughts exactly Kharv. We got 3 bunches of keys when we moved so maybe they made sly copies or kept a set. Either way it feels a bit premeditated. I still can't believe their cheek as l wouldn't think to do it or even do it' Mr Erin and Mr Erin's dad will be there all day tomorrow doing stuff and sort the locksmiths. There is nothing to steal at the moment but its not the point. They can jog on if they think l am keeping any post for them or forwarding it on.

The very first thing you should do when you move house is change all the locks as you don't know who else has a set. Top tip for all house movers. We've always done it on the day we moved in.

    I am very paranoid!

its a horrible feeling to think they've been in your house when you weren't there, how rude, I can't understand how some people think :-(

get the locks changed quick so you can relax. We just did it ourselves ( well my dad did, he has the right tools for it)

Definitely get the locks changed ASAP. After we moved we found a locksmith and they did it the same day.

On the plus side at least you realised now to sort it rather than moving in and being settled and finding things have been moved! I would be absolutely fuming too. The cheek of some people!!

    Echo everyone elses shock/rage!

A Joiner changed our locks, don't think it needs to be a locksmith if that helps (I may be wrong though!)

I'd be fuming too!! Seems a bit ridiculous that they just pranced in, how did they know neither of you were already in there? We've been tenants, I wouldn't have dreamt of keeping a key just to get the post!! Especially as like you have said, you would have been willing to pass it onto them! Change those locks!

I think they could tell we weren't there as there were no curtains up into last night. Still a bit brave as we could have been upstairs and come down with a baseball bat! No news from the estate agents yet, we sent them a strongly worded email last night saying next time we would be calling the police and we want the keys back from the tenants. Plus pointing out it is trespass and not not acceptable. Mr Erin and his Dad are waiting for the locksmith now and doing other stuff. As you pointed Hoddy at least we found out before any of our belongings are in there.

To say I'm bored right now is an understatement, but this was enthralling read for all the wrong reasons. Cannot for the life of me believe that people can behave this way and think they can get away with it. Shocking. Thankfully, my job at locksmith liverpool distracts me enough.

What a predicament. If you did everything you have written in the post, then you will be just fine.

I think it's better to change the locks. And maybe install video monitoring.

That's actually shocking! I would definitely question this and consider calling the police/changing the locks as a precaution!! ☹️
