What would you think "original" at weddings?

ForTheLoveOfMrsBrown, 23 April, 2013 at 12:33 Posted on Planning 0 70

Apropos of Skeptic's needlessly worried post....

If you were a guest attending a wedding, what would be "new" to you? You have to forget what you've seen here, on blogs or in mags....what are the things that "appear" very standard when you trawl the internet, but would actually be very novel in person?

I have never been to a wedding that featured any of the following:

A seaside theme ?
A hog roast (that I've seen cooked) or a BBQ meal
A picnic
Afternoon tea
A bride in a coloured dress (I mean, anything other than majority white, ivory, very pale gold)
Bridesmaids in black dresses
Jam/fudge/cookies as favours
Bridal entrance to "Here Comes The Bride" (honestly, I can't think when this has happened)
A massive cake of cheese/pork pie/other delicious savouries (we had a pile of cheese wheels but not the gorgeous specially-made delights)
An outdoor ceremony

That'll do to start. I bet we're all more original in our own circles than the wedding industry has us believe ?

We're having a hog roast cooked outside whilst we play garden fete games, I've 50 pots of jams/chutneys made and then I'll be doing some cookie dough ones too. We're having a cheese tower.

I should invite you to mine!! ?

Oh, and I've never been to a wedding where there was a choreographed first dance, we're doing that too!

I have never been to a wedding when there is a theme other than a colour, or to a civil ceremony actually!

But we are having a hog roast for the evening (which means it will be cooking outside all day), and a cookie bar for favours/cake alternative (by alternative I mean my OH wanting a traditional cake and me not, so we are having both).

A few I can think of:

A wedding where the couple used anything other than classical music

A cold fork buffet rather than a hot, three-course meal for the breakfast

Personal, handmade decorations (most people seem to buy personalised items these days, not quite the same !)

Relaxed weddings. Seen too many weddings where people try and act out of character and 'fill' a role.

    Think that's all

    What an interesting thread

Alot of the above i have experienced at weddings so it just goes to show how diverse weddings can be

I have never been to a Civil Ceremony

    Never had hog roast

I have never been to a themed wedding

I've never been to a reception that wasn't a hotel

Never been to a wedding with a daddy/ daughter dance

Never been to a wedding where the bride and groom have left for honeymoon that evening ( guess this is pretty old fashioned )

This is such a great thread. I am getting so excited about my wedding now. I haven't thought 'wedding' for at least 2 months because of so much other stuff, I'm actually looking forward to it and think I am going to have a great day, ha ha ha!!

I haven't seen a wedding not in a church or hotel (ours is)

I haven't seen a bouncy castle or limbo or 5 a side football (we are)

I haven't seen anyone arrive on horseback (we're not!)

I haven't seen anyone involve their pets in the ceremony (no, she'll be there, but NO.)

I haven't attended a wedding in the last 8 years that used flowers as table centres for the guest tables. When I first married everyone had flowers, now there is a choice it seems to be more crystals, cages, candelabras etc.

    Never seen at a wedding:

a venue decorated to go with a theme beyond coloured sashes, table decs, the cake and a few bits as you come in.

    additional entertainment beyond a band/dj.

a free evening bar (except at my own over 20 yrs ago).

a DIY wedding that didn't have the caterer provided by the venue (whether a castle or a hotel)

    an outdoor wedding

    no speeches

    no table plan

I've seen a lot of the above at weddings before but I've never been to a wedding with :

    Afternoon tea

Cake made of cheese / pork pie

    Animals involved

    A choreographed dance

I'd never heard of a masquerade ball reception either but I've just been invited to a wedding with this.

    - I've never seen an ice sculpture at a wedding

    - Never seen a dove release or any other animal involvement- thank goodness!

    - Never seen the bride arrive in a big horse-drawn carriage

My SIL did have a troupe of little girl Irish dancers, rather odd as they arent even Irish

They also had a wedding cake that looked like a castle with a dragon in the moat!

They met at an anime convention & a few guests wore Japanese inspired anime outfits

My other SIL had a surprise, medieval themed wedding. (They got married abroad & had a blessing back in the UK that my parents in law organised). It was a surprise to guests & the wedding couple that it was medieval themed & dress-up. After snacks at a local pub (which the couple knew about) all guests were taken in a double decker bus to the barn venue. We had decorated it all including a lute playing band, hog roast, knights in armour & hog roast severed by wenches.

The couple were given proper dress-up outfits as did key people. All other guests were given a tabard to put on that we had made beforehand, complete with a stamped on seal with their initials on the front. It was fantastic!

My friend had fish & chips in cones and I thought that was awesome and original.

My sister had a cheese cake. Oh, and she had a tractor as the transport. That was certainly original!!

    ?

Original to me would basically be anything from Rock and Roll Bride. I flurpin' love that website!! But- to a degree- even some of those almost begin to look 'samey' after a while- tattooed bride, fifties dress, dyed hair, victory rolls...

Part of me always wanted a medieval wedding, with full-on jousting, jugglers, banqueting, mead, with everyone camping on site...the whole shebang. Sadly we were restricted on budget. There was also an AMAZING games / geek themed wedding on RnR Bride. I think those weddings which commit 100% to a certain style or theme (and do it well) are original.

As far as weddings I've been to...actually, they've all been pretty standard. Our friends had Krispy Kreme donuts instead of a wedding cake, all arranged on what can only be described as a neon fibreglass 'helter skelter' arrangement, with Star Wars figures on top! I can genuinely say I've not seen its like since.

I have never been to a same-sex wedding though, and would love to.

Starting to think that our original idea of getting spliced at the registry office then hopping on a cruise ship the same afternoon was our most 'unique'!

Do you know what I'd love? Morris dancers. I bloomin' LOVE Morris dancers. I remember going to the Gaffers in Yarmouth last year, getting completely trashed and dancing around with a bunch of them who I swear were just as drunk as I was. They gave me a massive club / stick thing to hit people with too. Fun times.

Oo Skeppy when we first talked about marriage years ago I wanted a full on medieval do. Dress up, fire eaters, jesters and jousting, finger food feasting the lot! I was even in contact with a lady who organises it all then realised there was no way we would afford it! So, things we are having that ive not seen personally at weddings.... Non 'traditional' processional, entrance and recessional music in church, Grooms father as best man, Female usher, MOB and MOB being walked to their places in church, Bride taller than groom lol!, Hog roast as main food, Outdoor fete games, Ice cream van, Candy buffet, Children being properly catered to entertainment wise, Informal table seating ie no top table and no specific places at tables, Seed favours, FOB singing jazz with a live band :0), Informal, short speeches- if any!! , Thumb print tree. I've never been to a themed wedding unfortunately.... Would love the chance to have a bit of a dress up in something quirky! Grrr apologies if this is still all clamped together- its not displaying in the way I have written! :0/

I've never been to a wedding which:

    had a BBQ/hog roast/afternoon tea.

Never been to a wedding outside or in a barn.

Where there has been a welcome drink other than Buck's Fizz.

Where than has been an alternative to canapés.

Never been to a wedding where there has been a photo booth, sweet cart, ice cream van.

    Bride in a colour dress.

    cheese cake.

OMG that's quite hard to think of something - I'm having a few things that people have listed.

I've never been to a wedding where the Bride and Groom saw each other before the ceremony Smiley smile

I've never been to a wedding where the Bride tossed her bouquet

Pretty much my entire wedding is a first for me:

Never been to a wedding in a barn

never had a bbq for the wedding breakfast

never seen a bouncy castle at a wedding

never seen the bride roll up in a pink vw camper van

never been to a wedding where the bride has worn a tea dress

never been to a wedding where the MOH has worn a 50's rockabilly dress

never been to a wedding where the flower girls and page boys were wearing converse boots

never been to a wedding where the bride walked down the aisle to Guns n Roses

never been to a wedding where the register was signed to Green Day

my list is possibly endless! but mainly, I've never been to a wedding where the bride and groom have done everything totally their own way without worrying about what others thought.

I've not seen loads of things which are really popular on here! Just picking stuff out from other people's lists...

    I've never seen: -

    - Any kind of themed wedding

    - A coloured wedding dress

    - A cheese/pork pie cake

    - A cupcake tower(!!)

    - Wine charms as favours (I still don't really know what they're for...)

    - Pets/other animals involved, unless you count horsedrawn carriages for transport

    - Photo booth

    - Sand ceremony/handfasting

    - A sweet buffet, though we did have edible sweetie table centrepieces

    - Anything with no table plan or otherwise informal/alternative (I'm a pretty straight-laced kind of girl ?).

    - A gay/lesbian wedding - Funky, I'm looking at YOU!

However, I have been to multiple Oxbridge college weddings, which is probably something most people on here haven't done.

Teehee, this happened at our wedding! Chief BM and the best man - they were together ~18 months, but have just split up. ☹️

I've never been to a wedding where the main course wasn't chicken! I've only been to one wedding where the food was actually good - irrespective of budget!

I've never been to a wedding on the top of a cliff in Greece, over looking a volcano, in a winery so my wedding will be original to me! (and to all of my guests which is super exciting!)

I thought loads of people had themes, photo booths, hog roasts and 50's dresses. Maybe I've watched too much 'don't tell the bride'

I've only actually been to one wedding as an adult, which I suppose was rather traditional, and I can't remember those from my childhood. So I guess everything I am considering for my own wedding is original!

Some of the ideas floated here are ones I have considered, I LOVE the idea of afternoon tea (I am a known tea addict) so the idea is one I keep mentioning to OH, he will eventually take the hint... and Mother of the bride isn't being walked down the aisle as such, she's walking me down the aisle so that kind of counts!

Most of what I see on here and in magazines, blogs etc I've not seen for real, including quite a few of the things that seem commonplace when you look at wedding planning websites and magazines. I've never been to a wedding with or known anyone who's had...

    A savoury cake.

A sweetie buffet, table or centrepieces.

    Hog roast or BBQ.

Any sort of theme apart from vintage.

Anything other than flowers (real or fake) for a bouquet.

My OH is amazed/impressed with almost every wedding item and everything is new to him because until his friends' wedding this year he'd never been to a wedding that wasn't a traditional Jewish wedding of a member of his extended family! His friends' wedding was a pretty relaxed, understated wedding with a sit down meal, DJ, dancing and buffet in a nice hotel, it was lovely and suited them well. The only thing that was 'different' for me was her tea length dress but my OH didn't know what was coming next and didn't believe me at first that there was going to be a buffet in the evening! So a sweetie cart or a pork pie cake would've blown his mind!

As my brother's groomswoman, it was my job to walk their dog down the aisle in their ceremony ?

Great idea for a thread, actually. I do sometimes think that we as brides get a little carried away with being unique and lose sight of the fact that all our weddings will be unique without necessarily needing to have entirely different elements to them.

I've never been to a wedding with:

    hog roast

    afternoon tea

    ice cream trike

cake buffet (our one unique thing)

    fireworks

    garden games

    ice cream bar

    dove release (hehe)

Things I've seen at weddings that I thought were really unique:

photobooth (this was back in 2008, though if I wasn't engaged, I'd probably still think it was cool)

    scotch tasting tent

    chinese lanterns

    tea bar

persian wedding spread (ok, ok, so it was a half persian wedding, and not something that could be done by just anyone...)

It's really interesting to see that all the things that seem popular these days haven't been seen by most of you!

All the weddings I've been to have been pretty traditional to be honest. I haven't seen the majority of the stuff you've all listed on this thread either apart from a hog roast & a photo booth.

The only things I can think of that stood out to me were all from a wedding a went to recently. Their first dance was to a dance tune recorded by the brides Daughter & the groom did a very entertaining dance to it. They had a photo booth & it was so much fun. The best man didn't do a speech as such, he made a video! It went on a bit & there wasn't much about the bride but it was certainly different! They also had an awesome table plan. It was a miniature replica of the room which I've never seen before!

Oh my boss had fireworks & they were pretty awesome. They also had one of those finger print tree things as their guest book. I've taken this one step further & will be having a fake tree! In the day it will serve as my table plan. There'll be big hearts hanging off it with everyone's names on. Then in the evening there'll be small hearts for people to write a message on then hang on the tree.

My garter made an unexpected appearance during the Ceilidh. Spent a while wrapped around my wrist, and then eventually returned to its proper home!

We had a cheese "cake" and "fudge" (Nigella express cheaty version) as favours.

My main originality was that I played a flute solo with the flute choir during our drinks reception!
