What's actually worth watching on telly these days?

Flump, 17 August, 2009 at 18:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 40

I am so out of the loop with telly-watching these days. Soaps take up too much time, but apart from that I don't know what good series there are at the moment? I'm not a 24 or Lost kind of person, I did like Desperate Housewives but lost track a few series ago, I loved Mistresses although only caught the last ep of Series 2 on TV and had to buy it on DVD. I don't like police/murdery type things. I do like Hotel Babylon and that's about the only thing I really know to watch at the moment. Psychoville was soooo wrong but compelling viewing, and we've just bought Flight of the Conchords on DVD to watch.

Any recommendations for current good series wot I can V+? Oh, and I have about 20 hours of Come Dine With Me to catch up on ?

?

I don't know - we seem to have been watching the Wire exclusively for about 3 months. It's EXCELLENT (Series 5 - the last one is starting this week on BBC2)

I watch property porn (mostly loving Gorgeous George on the Home Show at present), Who Do You Think You Are (the one thing I record), Young Dumb and Living With Mum (for Robert Webb's voiceover) and whatever's on Dave after about 8pm (Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week, QI).

I don't do series really. I don't have the patience.

If you haven't done Mad Men, you have time to catch up with season 1 & 2 on DVD before season 3 comes to the UK (ETA Jan 2010). It's absolutely incredible television - visually stunning, wonderful acting, sexy men, beautiful women, powerful storylines. It is the best thing on TV by far at the moment.

I currently watch TV once a week - Ugly Betty, which I love love love. It makes me weep with laughter and MrRache loves it too. Once that finishes I'll be waiting for Doctor Who at Xmas and then the third series of Ashes To Ashes in spring 2010. (I can only deal with one thing at a time it seems).

I'm amazed by the number of Crimewatch fans.

I like University Challenge, Valentine Warner (may have finished), Sarah Beeny, Location x3. We don;t get Sky or I'd be watching House (waiting for DVD to come out instead). Is Entourage back? That's brilliant.

Aah now we bought House series 1 on DVD about a year ago, and literally started watching it last night! It was a bit too gorey for me though ? I used to like Nip/Tuck though until it started getting all dream-sequency.

Ugly Betty - I used to loooove that! Could I get back into that quite easily? A girl at work refused to update me on what has happened to all the characters since I last saw it (end of series one) - sulk! ?

Mad Men - I tried an episode but it was a bit too highbrow for me ?. Did the same with Entourage - the episode I saw didn't grab me. And same again with Californication. Gaaaaah I really want to love telly again like I used to!

Complete sucker for housey housey type progs (oh, and Girls of the Playboy Mansion, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Kimora Life in the Fast Lane etc etc), but not allowed to watch those in company - pah!

thanks for the suggestions all, will get looking and recording!

Hasn't the Home Show finished? I loved George until the last few of the series, I thought he was a bit too OTT with other peoples' money.

H and I have really enjoyed the In Betweeners but it's finished ? I love One Tree Hill but I sky+ the monday night show and watch it an evening when MrSun isn't around. Also sky+ the Biggest Loser US, so much better than the UK one IMHO

I absolutely love Dollhouse too. I kind of like just about anything Joss Whedon has made (even going to a fan convention later this year, Hallowhedon ?)

Also like Ugly Betty, a bit mindless but fun. The Daily Show, wouldn't stay home for it, but do like to watch it now and again. Also really like Family Guy and American Dad.

Oooh good tip about the Tudors, I don't care if it's 'good' we will be watching that! Also we've been enjoying True Blood on FX - quite gory vampire series, think we've just seen ep 4 or 5 but there's at least 12 in total and you can prob find the earlier ones somewhere if you're so inclined.

Definitely not "We are Klang", we're watching it for the first time on BBC 3 at the moment. It's just awful. Possibly the worst thing I have seen in a loooooong time.

House is too gory for you? House?? [mind boggles and then implodes] I despair of you sometimes, mon amie. House is amazing. Hugh Laurie is amazing.

I don't actively watch much tv these days, just the odd film, the occasional CDWM and whatever crap is on late at night to help wind down after an evening shift. There's not much which seems to hold my interest, series-wise. I enjoyed Single-handed but that was more for the Connemara scenery and accents than for the plot. ? Apart from that, the only thing I try not to miss is Who Do You Think You Are? The recent Kim Cattrall one was fascinating. And Medium... but that's probably way too supernatural and spooky for you (if your reaction to The Others is anything to go by ?)

Really enjoying Lie to Me, with Tim Roth, and My Own Worst Enemy (although this requires considerable suspension of disbelief), with Christian Slater, both on Sky 1. Location X 3 always a favourite and still like Ugly Betty. Loved Flight of the Conchords. Don't know if it is still on but there was a sitcom on BBC1 called Outnumbered with Hugh Dennis which was semi improvised and very funny. Think might be on Saturday nights although may have finished now.

My favourite thing on TV at the moment though is True Blood on FX, which is a vampire series. It's got a really dark Southern American vibe.

I have watched the house show with George and just end up shouting at the TV so Mr Woo has banned me.....he just fritters their money away on crap and often actually doesn't improve the actual house that much (it just looks really nice and staged for the day they do the filming I suspect)

I lurves the Ugly Betty, Reaper, Mock the week, property snakes and ladders and location x3 (which we have applied to be on ? the production company have contacted us and as soon as we know the region we want I have to call them back - although I'm really concerned and worried that I will be one of those horribly annoying clients that is never happy and Phil and Kirsty end up sat on a garden swing chair slagging off ? )

I thin I have seen this. It's the one where they save up and have £100k to spend on their house, and he tells them 'I can decorate the living room for that but you can't have your dream come true home unless you find another £50k', so they do and then he says 'oh did I say £50k? I meant £75k, you must give me that cash, immediately, as the builder has already done the work' and they do? And then their house looks like it's been house doctored? I hate that man, he pisses on and subverts peoples' dreams and then makes them pretend to be happy by prodding them with sharp sticks.

That is the one Lois! It gives me the absolute rage!

I remember one where they had 3 children and the house was initially full of clutter he was going to 'help' with stopping it happening again. At the end the only storage solution I saw was a stupid (but expensive) cupboard for shoes at the bottom of the stairs...it held about 4 pairs of shoes ?

My favourite property show is Extreme Makeover: Home Edition which is on Home (used to be UKTV Style). Ok, it's completely cheesy and very American, but it is pure escapism and I'm a sucker for a sob story. They should cut back on the themed kid's bedrooms though.

You Have Been Watching with Charlie Brooker is required viewing in this household, the man is a god. We also love the Conchords and I have a slight crush on Brett (is that wrong?!). Taking The Flak was excellent and Outnumbered is definitely one of my favourite sitcoms ever.

I concur with JK about Who Do You Think You Are, and we also love QI & Buzzcocks, but they're not on at the moment. I also lurve Spooks which is coming back soon - yay! I also have a crush on Richard Armitage, he's a very yummy man.

I definitely second the recommendation for Mad Men - utterly superb.

Also The Tudors back on this week...although the article in the Radio Times has given me the rage already...
