What's in a name?

Pompey, 13 February, 2014 at 11:45 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 124

I know we've probably done this before, but the birth of OB and the lovely name that her and Mr OB have given to their son has got me a'thinking.

I love 'normal' and biblical names for boys. Thomas, Edward, Benjamin, Isaac, etc. But for girls, my taste is a little different, I like pretty names. Eliza, Sofia, Nancy, Emma, Isobel, etc. Is this because of gender sterootyping? I don't like the shortening of names too. Alfie is a very cute name, but it's short for Alfred IMHO, so that should be the child's official name. Same as Charlie should be short for Charles.

Working where I do, I come across some funny old names. The best I've come across so far are Pompey (a girl), Gypsy, Vine and Roody (no joke).

So what are the worse names you've come across (in your opinion)? And what names do you like? Are your tastes more traditional or unusual?

I can't stand "places" names. Like Paris, Brooklyn etc. I think they're awful.

If I ever have a baby girl, I'll call her Isobelle, I ruddy love that name.

Boys I've never really thought about, but I do love the name Noah.

I don't like traditional or "common" names. (top 10 names) I don't like names I assosiate with horrible people.

I like slightly unusual names, but not so unusual they seem made up. (although, some people have asked if J's name is made up).

Never going to happen, but if I had another baby, it'd be Brodey, for a boy or girl.

My H had clients called "metallica" and "Anywhere". Worst baby name, would be "Tia Maria", especially when shouted across the park. "Oi, Tia maria, get yer @rse ere now"

I'm with you Pompey! I have four children all with very traditional names. For some funny reason, the boys always got shortened but the girls never did but they were all christened with their long names and I wouldn't have it any other way. As far as weird names are concerned, throughout their school years we've come across the following:

    Tizane

    Trilby-sue

    Trinity

    Feodosia

    and.... the worst one....

Bubbles!! What parent calls their kid after Michael Jackson's monkey???? This one still astounds me lol

I think my own is pretty bad ?

I know of a little girl called Tequila - if it wasn't a drink I think it would sound quite pretty but I think it's a bit of strange choice.

My siblings and I all have unusual names and so do lots of my family and I think it's nice in a way but I prefer traditional names. I like some shortened names but not necessarily the full version - like Ed or Ben.

For girls I love a lot of Irish names such as orlaith, oonagh and niamh etc.

It doesn't really bother me how popular a name is because you could try to pick one that's less popular only to find it soars in popularity a year later.

Paper for a girl. And Mercedes. Why just why?

I like Isabella for a girl and Dylan for a boy! I think i go for more "pretty" names rather than traditional!

    I also like traditional names.

H's niece is called Honey, which is cute and suits her at 4yrs old. I don't think she'll be quite so honey-like at 14... H's nephew is called Sonny. I really hope they don't have a third as the only thing that I can think rhymes now is "money" or "bunny".

I'm not keen on placenames as names, either. H was going to be called "Leigh" after his mothers hometown but thankfully they changed their mind!

In my head I rhymed that with Noah, definitely didn't think it would be pronounced Bow!

I dislike names that are 'normal' but spelt ridiculously for the sake of it, one being a girl in my sister's class called Eleanor spelt Ellener, why?!

I like traditional names for boys, I love William but girl's names I seem to like less popular names, such as Cara, Adeline and Brodey.

I know of a family who have a Tequila and a Sambuca

I'm exactly the same. I know a Jak and a Jazmin and I guess that they will be forever having to spell their names!

My Dad was a head teacher before he retired and he had a family in the school with children called Elvis, Sue-Ellen, Del-Boy and Boycie. Poor sods.

I like Alba too. That's always been my first choice girl name.

For a boy I like Jack but it's too common. Maybe Ewan or Malcom or Archie.

My friend has a son called Bear. I think it's cute and he really suits it!

Ha I hope it's not off the Gladiators! I don't think that was her inspiration, I think she was after an American sounding name.

Also, I know a lady who has just had a baby boy and called him the same DCM!
