What's in a name?

I know we've probably done this before, but the birth of OB and the lovely name that her and Mr OB have given to their son has got me a'thinking. I love 'normal' and biblical names for boys. Thomas, Edward, Benjamin, Isaac, etc. But for girls, my taste is a little different, I like pretty names....

I love 'normal' and biblical names for boys. Thomas, Edward, Benjamin, Isaac, etc. But for girls, my taste is a little different, I like pretty names. Eliza, Sofia, Nancy, Emma, Isobel, etc. Is this because of gender sterootyping? I don't like the shortening of names too. Alfie is a very cute name, but it's short for Alfred IMHO, so that should be the child's official name. Same as Charlie should be short for Charles.

Working where I do, I come across some funny old names. The best I've come across so far are Pompey (a girl), Gypsy, Vine and Roody (no joke).

So what are the worse names you've come across (in your opinion)? And what names do you like? Are your tastes more traditional or unusual?

I have seen a princess starlight crystal (or similar)

    Aristotle.

Another one - their name was diamond white.

I like slightly unusual names but not so much they're ridiculous. Our faves at the moment are Freya Rose for a girl and Flynn James for a boy.

Thank you - I've always hated it because it's unusual (and everyone assumes it's a boys name). That's why I think is give my children more popular names

I'm not fan of misspelling names for the sake of it either. I quite like aristotle though!

I like nice traditional names too, my boys called Matthew. My brothers are James & Thomas, nephew Jack etc.
Girls names I like Jade, Sofia, Emily.
Then again we were also going to call M Caleb, Corey, Nathan, Josh or Anthony so not all quite traditional.

My friends boy is Rudie which i'm not keen on, and in M's nursery there's a Jayden, Cayden & Hayden...I feel everyones just plonking any letter at the start of Aiden now & it does haha Smiley smile

Girls: generally a fan of two-syllable names that end in a vowel. Especially those that contain a V or and F. My favourite is Aiofe, or the more Anglicised Eva (although they aren't equivalent names). I also like Ava and Evie. You get the picture. I would champion Niamh but it's my middle name and that seems a little arrogant to give that to your child.

Boys: tend to the more traditional/biblical, although not keen on William, James, Edward or Daniel (as full or as shortened names).

However, given free rein and with no qualms about how a child would cope at school etc, I go crazy unusual every time. I like mythological gods/goddesses, and stars, and musical terms, and places. Anything goes really.

If my ex had got his way with naming C, he'd have been called Jet. He had a lucky escape.

DCM you know I think your name is lovely.

If my dad had his was I would have been called Chelsea...

I think I would have to get boyo to pick names for our children, I am so indecisive at times it takes me ten minutes to choose a sandwich!

Strangely we decided our fictional children's names after only a few months of dating. I have no idea why but H wanted to talk about it! We have a first and middle name for a boy and a girl. I love them although I've never told anyone them incase they got used before us!

I like older names and more traditional names although I love something a little different but not totally mental. I don't think some people realise their kids have to have it their whole lives !

Two girls names I've always loved are Elsa and Elspeth. However, when discussing our imaginary childrens' names, my H changed them to Smellsa and Smellspeth - totally ruined. He likes Roxanne (shortened to Roxie)... his car is now called this.

My car was Roxy! I had a Roxy sticker in the window too ?

I can't decide on any names. I like Dexter but Mr C thinks it will make people think of a serial killer ?

Haha! He doesn't have a sticker for the window (yet) but he was looking at personalised Roxy-esque number plates the other day. Just no.

I like names that are fairly traditional. There aren't a lot of boys names I really like though- H and I have been set on a boy called Dylan practically since our first date and I've never really thought about any other boys names. I don't know what we'd do if we had two boys! I know H likes Jacob, and thinking about it I quite like Zachary.

I really like pretty names for girls: Ella, Alyssa, Sophia and Megan are my favourites.

My nephews two best friends are called jet and woody. That could be awkward when he becomes a teenager.

My hypothetical children would be called James, Isaac or Jacob. Girls would be Poppy, Ivy, Eva or Elsie.

ETA: Only weird because your list is so similar, not because the names are weird! I love those names ❤️

    I did like ..

Boy : Osian Glyn, or Llyr

Girl : Elan Fflur , ... BUT since I work in a nursery and it's hard to actually like a name without thinking of said kid.

I'm not a fan of traditional names but I also don't like made up names either ? I always thought my name was a made up one, I still don't know why my folks picked my name gahh!

Leni my H's middle name is Llyr, he hates that no one knows how to pronounce it. The registrar practically mumbled it when we got married!

I have a similar problem with relating names to people, except in my case it's elderly people, especially since a lot of "old fashioned" names have become fashionable again.

I like 'normal' names My children are called Jake and Sophie, My best friend and I always have heated discussions about names as she thinks that my children's names are common ,I say they are not common they are popular which means that lots of people like the names which is not a bad thing, she likes names that are not 'common', her children are called Phoebe and Leon, which in my opinion are popular as well.

    La - a

    Pronounced: Ladasha

    Poor wean.

On pinterest, there was a post from someone who is a teacher, and has competitions with her sister, who is also a teacher.

She had a student, called Ya'Hyness.
