What's in a name?

I know we've probably done this before, but the birth of OB and the lovely name that her and Mr OB have given to their son has got me a'thinking. I love 'normal' and biblical names for boys. Thomas, Edward, Benjamin, Isaac, etc. But for girls, my taste is a little different, I like pretty names....

I love 'normal' and biblical names for boys. Thomas, Edward, Benjamin, Isaac, etc. But for girls, my taste is a little different, I like pretty names. Eliza, Sofia, Nancy, Emma, Isobel, etc. Is this because of gender sterootyping? I don't like the shortening of names too. Alfie is a very cute name, but it's short for Alfred IMHO, so that should be the child's official name. Same as Charlie should be short for Charles.

Working where I do, I come across some funny old names. The best I've come across so far are Pompey (a girl), Gypsy, Vine and Roody (no joke).

So what are the worse names you've come across (in your opinion)? And what names do you like? Are your tastes more traditional or unusual?

OOOh, I know what you're reading - I love those books!!! If I was going to have any more children, which I'm not (too old, too tired, can't be done anyway ?), I'd have had Ayla - maybe I'll suggest it when I have grandchildren ?

Apparently I'm not allowed to call any girl children Arya.

Though several of H's name choices are picked from computer games, so I don't think he can complain too much.

They are brilliant books, I've just finished my second time reading them all. Last book very disappointing though.

    WHAT?!?!!? ?

ETA: oh god, now people will think that's where I got my Ted's name from. Harrumph. Not bloody likely. His name was actually inspired by a book my grandparents gave me when I was 4 and I've hung onto to this day because it's just so lovely:

    That IS unfortunate!

I'm sure they won't, though. Not anyone that knows you, anyway! Ha!

I've read all of the 50 shades books and I'd totally forgotten about the name. I wouldn't have made the association if that makes you feel any better!

H vetoed Eddard as a possibility for Jacob. I'm not sure if I'd have gone through with it even if allowed, but it would have been cool.

Bit late to the party here but I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread! I know someone called Alphonse Capone. In fact, Al Capone came to my wedding. I also know someone who had triplets in her class at school called Becky, Lecky and Alan. I have also known a Jo King.

I like traditional names, Isabel, Ava, Esme for girls, and recently I discovered Elodie which I think is lovely. Boys names I find much harder but I do like Matthew, James, Daniel and rather daringly for me, Zachary.
