What's normal?

Jan2010, 18 February, 2010 at 22:13 Posted on Planning 0 16

Hi

Is it normal to pay the photographer all the money before the day? Just worry if we pay them they will not turn up.

Thanks

Jan

Do you really want to have to worry about having x amount of cash on you on the day? You have a contract, you'll be fine.

I'll be paying everyone before the day whether they like it or not! I don't want any of my wedding party to be worrying about all that on the day.

We have paid our photographer £100 deposit. The rest we pay when we receive our photo book.

I wouldn't worry too much if you have a contract.

I have some people who want paid cash on the day and one of the ushers will be appointed "money man". He will have envelopes of cash to give to the correct people. Most want it before though.

Ours has to be paid before the day as well which, I think, is better than having to take money and pay him on the day.

The band and piper want paid cash on the day so I have to remember to take that and task somebody with doing it. I would much prefer that this wasn't the case though cos its a hassle I could do without.

As a wedding supplier (entertainment) I give my clients the choice of paying before or on the day. Nine times out of ten people prefer to have it paid up before hand so that they don't have to worry about it on the day. As long as you have a contract and a receipt for all monies paid you shouldn't need to worry. All reputable wedding suppliers, be it photographers, DJs videographers etc, rely on their reputation so will abide by their contract.

    Hi everyone

Thank you for your replies, has put me more at ease. As we are having photo albums within our package was not sure if it was common practice to pay the majority before the wedding and then a small percentage once the photos had been ordered for the album.

As a photographer most others ask for payment before the day - If you were to view photographers forums you would see threads about photographers not getting paid or worrying about not being paid.

I normally ask for £200 deposit and balance 14 days before the wedding

If a couple ask about paying after the wedding I will offer same deposit and 50% of balance before the wedding and the remainder at the point we order the album as this is my biggest outgoing cost for the wedding day.

If you want to spread the cost you could ask politely

We have paid a £250 deposit with the balance due 1 month before the wedding for a CD package. I met with 3 TOGs and got a copy of each of their contracts and all 3 had the same payment terms so I think it is pretty standard.

My first wedding we had a pro photographer. They took a 50% deposit, and the rest of the balance was paid upon receipt of the photos. I had a contract with them.

This time my keen photographer friend is doing the photos for £30 on a cd for us, and thats just payable when he's put them to cd. I know where he lives so he can't escape me lol xxx

Its normal to pay before the wedding, though with my photographer you pay for your books and albums after the wedding, but I took advantage of his offer to get an additional 10% off, if I paid beforehand.

Why are you worried about the photographer not turning up? If you don't trust him thats not a good start. Is he a professional? Or just one of those part time people with a camera?

We pay 4 weeks before. I think its only fair, because from their point of view they might worry you'll cancel on them if all they have is the deposit! And i dont want to be dealing with money on the day anyway i need to forget about how much its all costing
