I'm not talking about being surprised by budgets or left stumped by catering choices - I'm thinking more life lessons.
For me, the most unexpected thing I've learnt and discovered about planning my wedding is realising who my real friends are. People I thought were solid invites to the wedding (people I've known for decades and more) are being really cagey about replying or saying they can't make it coz of money issues, but then I find out they're spending hundreds of pounds on personal hobbies that they could easily sacrifice for the sake of the most important day of my life (more context: they've been doing this same personal hobby every year and it wouldn't hurt to skip it just once - and they say they have money issues but then they don't tell me it's because of this specific hobby).
Sorry, rant over. Just wondering if there's other people in the same boat as me?
