Whats ur theme???

sarahjolley, 22 August, 2010 at 22:39 Posted on Planning 0 26

Sooo I am struggling a bit with coming up with a 'theme' to follow for my wedding.

Not got anything yet apart from my venue, but I like so many different things that dont go together. For example I really want a lace dress fairly slim fitting, but then i cant think of what bridesmaids dresses would suit, then i wanted feather centreprices but they dont go, arrgghhhhh. How did u all decide what to do and what are u doing?? I need inspiration.

Any good webites?? and flashes welcome to

    Hi, sarahjolley!

Well, first of all, when is the wedding? Summer, fall, winter? What do you both like? I am having a Winter Wonderland meets Narnia... Pine cones for place cards, lots of fir garlands, snow-sprayed, etc...

The last is my OH's photo he took in Jan this year near our local church - we are using the pic for invites, table plan etc!

Mine is vintage/shabby chic as I absolutely love that style. Most things in my house are shabby chic, I just love it all. Alot of stuff that I buy will be re-used in my house and stuff that I already have can be used to decorated my venue.

I chose my venues around my theme, I didn't want big fancy modern places so I have a Castle (Mostly ruin!) for ceremony and a big old church for reception.

Hi, first of all loving all the pics, especialy the pine cone name cards - very inventive!

Im having doves only because i saw cheap picture frames with doves on for favours and name cards so went from there realy! everything else has fit in to place. So maybe try that find one thing you love either an invite or a centre peice and carry on the theme!

If you wanted lace and couldn't find bridesmaid dresses to match see if a florist can put lace arount their flowers rather than a bow, or a small lace shrug to go over their dress. you could also have lace table runners to carry on the theme - don't know if any are suitable just some suggestions!

Who says feather and lace dont go? I am having a gold and cream theme. Have thought of having gold and cream feathers in centre with gold stars. White and gold balloons. Having either gold or cream BM dresses and yellow roses as button holes and bouquet (plus feathers in bouquet)

Sounds like your dress has a vintagey feel so maybe you could go down that theme? could have broderie anglaise table clothes or doilies on tables or something?

We've picked "autumnal" for our theme, as it's a September wedding, although a lot of the details are still being worked through.

We have hunter green and ivory for our main colourscheme, with other things in autumnal colours (gold, burgundy, copper, red, yellow, orange etc) and have asked all our guests to wear autumnal colours rather than pink, blue etc.

We are toying with the idea of extending "autumnal" into "harvest" and having corn stalks in with the flowers, perhaps some hessian sacking as table runners, fruit in the table decorations (like the glass vase of apples above!)

Yours should match nicely too if you get cooperating weather (and not just grey skies and rain). Part of our thinking was that being in the New Forest, all the trees surrounding the hotel should be turning autumnal too so it all kinda - hopefully - will coordinate.

I wonder if "Hunter Green" will be the next "Cadbury Purple"?

We're having a subtle butterfly theme, we're going to have these:

as our table centre pieces which will be decorated with the ivy (the pot will be covered up with an organza ribbon in our wedding colour - sage green) and lots of little butterflies.

I'm also hoping to have butterflies featuring in my bouquet somehow, but haven't got as far as researching that properly yet . . . SO much to do!

Oh, our cake is also going to feature butterflies, I've already seen the one we'll probably have, I fell in love with it at a wedding fayre I went to a couple of weeks ago.

I'm also making our invites and other stationery and these are going to have a subtle butterfly theme, so far I'm not 100% how it's going to feature as I'm trying to track down a rubber stamp I've seen, but I have ordered a self inking rubber stamp to mark each invite "Created By Sarah" and the logo features a little butterfly:

I don't think I have a really real theme. Mine is so close to xmas I couldn't ignore it, and wanted it to join in the celebrations. But the wedding itself is more "wedding themed" than anything. My girls are dressed in black, but our flowers are red to go with the xmas bit (but keeping it classy/wedding style). The party and dinner will be more xmas linked... with crackers at the table, candy canes and a silly party game or 2 ?

Were having a movie theme, we met in a drama class and are total movie buffs, plus everyone always says our relationship is like a movie plot so it all just seems to fit!

    Venue
    invites
stating: "A Real Life Fairytale" on the back at the bottom they also say "And they lived happily ever after"

Were having tables named after "our" movies : American Beauty, Say Anything, Magnolia, Return to Me, Princess Bride etc, and each will be covered with posters a bit like a wall thats been covered in coming attractions like this:

but with "our" films e.g. :

We also plan to have the table plan on a screen, and possibly rolling titles saying who the "cast" are i.e. "STARRING, as the Bride: me etc, and maybe thankyous.

    The main room is :
and were planning to have pictures of the guests (couples) on a slideshow throughout the day, interspersed with shots of us and our favourite movie couples.

Its difficult to make a theme themey enough without making it tacky I think, but I'm trying!

I cannot wait to see yours all come together! It will be Am.A.Zing!!!

I don't really have a theme, we are just choosing things that we like! Our venue is quite modern, the table centrepieces are moroccan lanterns, my flowers are orchids, the colour is turquoise and we are having a dress-up photo booth for a laugh!!!

I'm not going all out on a theme more of an air of vintage (with a spring summer feel).

My invitations are these cards in ivory

with a pink ribbon across front, thredded through an ivory pearl buckle.

My dress but mine is ivory.

    My vintage car!

Bridesmaid dresses but mine will be pink.

    Flowers similar to this.

My reception venue. Above outside, below inside!

Heehee, we're having a Sci Fi & Fantasy theme!

We're both huge geeks about those sorts of films, tv shows and books, and it's also sort of how we got together (long story about an argument in the pub over whether Babylon 5 or Star Trek Deep Space 9 was better). All our friends and family think of us as super geeks, so we couldn't really leave it out of our wedding. Even our website is called Geeks In Love, lol

We're working it in mostly in quite subtle ways: h2b and the ushers will be wearing this tie, and bridesmaids' dresses will be in midnight blue with silver wraps and shoes to coordinate:

Instead of having real flowers, I'm making the centrepieces and the bouquets from origami lilies made with silver paper and decorated with faux pearl beads:

They're going to stand in lily vases half-filled with blue glass beads

The biggest geek/sci-fi points will be the table names, the name card holders and the photo guestbook.... The tables are all named after worlds or focal points of various films and tv shows, so we have:

    • "Magrathea" (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
    • "Gallifrey" (Dr Who)
    • "Tatooine" (Star Wars)
    • "Starbug" (Red Dwarf)
    • "Cybertron" (Transformers)
    • "Starship Enterprise" (Star Trek)
    • "Babylon 5" (err... Babylon 5!)
    • "Hogwarts" (Harry Potter)
    • "Middle Earth" (Lord of the Rings)
    • "Ankh Morpork" (Discworld)
    • "Omnitrix" (Ben10 - the kids' table!)

The name card holders are all going to be action figures that we've been collecting from each show/movie. So, for example, the Gallifrey table will have a selection of posable figures from the Eleven Doctors play set I've just bought (whoop!), each posed to hold a card with the guest's name on. I'll flash as soon as they arrive and we have a trial run!

Haha, and the guestbook is my favourite. We're going to have a polaroid camera for people to take silly photos of themselves posting with a 6ft cutout of the TARDIS (and possibly Matt Smith as the Doctor too). Geektacular, and so very, very us!

You dont necessarily need to have a theme. my bridesmaids are foing to be in purple but we arent following that through to anything else and the tables are all going to be different.

if people ask me what our theme is, i tend to say either "a wedding theme" or i just say "the theme is me, its all about me" ! te he he!!!

if you sign up to the Dessy website, you can create a mood board and add it to the gallery, there a LOADS of moodboards that ppl have uploaded, there is plent of ideas and inspiration!

We have only just started planning but going for a Vintage/Shabby Chic theme, dusky pink and sage green, birdcage lanterns for centerpieces, lace, pretty bunting, handmade shabby chic decorations. Our venue is a round room and has a centre post and beams so going to dress them with trailing ivy and flowers x

We're not having a theme either - I say 'the theme is us getting married! if people ask'. We're just picking bits we like and going with that. Have chosen a neutral colour scheme but that leaves it very open still x
