What's your average spend on food in a month?

ashke_again, 30 July, 2009 at 18:00 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 64

Just trying to work out budgets and looking at the last few months we're probably spending nearly £260 (on average) on food for 2 of us. That's a bit much isn't it? Caught the start of the article on the BBC Breakfast this morning with Alvin what'shisface and he said that the average couple spend £210 on food. At least that's what i thought he said before i got a phonecall and so missed the rest.

I try and meal plan and not waste food by using up leftovers and freezing extra portions. I also try and make my own bread too when I can.

Anyother tips for saving money on food spending? I don't have space for growing my own or I'd be there like a shot and waiting times for allotments are stupid here in Aberdeen.

cheers

Jo

I worked it out once and it was £300 although that was when I worked near a butcher's and bought meat. Obvious stuff like taking your own lunch to work saves cash, no takeaways (I'm not giving mine up for anyone though!) and less meat will all help.

I don't take any notice of dates on food. I rarely throw any food away; I drive H mad with it! Any leftovers are eaten as another meal or turned into something else - throwing bits of whatever is left around into a curry, etc.

At least £400- I've tried to cut it down but we both like our food and we just seem to spend that much without trying. That's for 2 adults, 1 child and 2 cats, and is a combination of Ocado deliveries, Tesco top-ups and local butcher.

H and I usually do an online shop at Sainsburys every 2 weeks that comes to about £40, excluding delivery. We also buy the odd bits and pieces during the week at our local shop, and both buy lunch at work almost every day. I'd say including all of that, we probably spend £180 - 200 per month on food. This could be a lot cheaper if we weren't lazy and did ourselves packed lunches rather than buying it ?

I find the best way to make food go further is to cook in bulk and freeze portions - I love my slow cooker for doing this. I also pad things like bolognese/curry out with a lot of veg.

We spend an absolute max of £50 a week for three of us (inc food, booze, toiletries, household stuff and nappies). That's all we've got - if you don't have the money you can't spend it, though I don't suppose that's a particularly helpful budgeting tip. ?

I meal plan quite carefully and I don't buy anything that's not on my shopping list. I don't buy any brand name items and we don't eat very much meat. I batch cook/bake for the baby. I never buy food or drink when out and about, not even a cup of tea, and we make lunch to take to work.

It's all quite tedious really. ?

We spend between £250-£300 a month on food for just the two of us. We've actually switched supermarkets this week in an attempt to bring that down a bit.

We used to spend around £300 per month for just the two of us. However we have done some serious bugeting lately and have got this down to around £180pm. We have started to get our meat from a wholesale butchers, buying bulk and splitting it up into portions and freezing. I make the most of places like Lidl and Aldi. I also do a bulk buy in Farmfoods, and get whatever frozen stuff we need. I found buying things like frozen peppers- 99p per bag and we would use about 5 times, versus cost of one pepper for around 90p saved us some cash. Im also always on the watchout for money off vouchers and take advantage of BOGOFs etc.

We spend about £60 - 70 a week for 2 of us. I meal plan and we don't eat a lot of meat so I can cut it down a bit more if I need to. I have really noticed that food has gone up a lot in the last year though, last year we could spend around £45 - 50 for the same food. When H does the shopping he always ends up spending at least £90 but that's because he can't resist 'stocking up' on things so we'll end up with 3 toothpastes and 4 bottles of fabric conditioner. He's much better than he used to be (his mum's the same too but more extreme, she has food 4 years out of date in her cupboards because she's bought so much she never uses it) but it drives me mad!

Around £400 - £500 a month which includes drinks and all household products. I think that's far too much but I can't get it down, without lowering the quality of what we buy and whilst we are earning I'm not willing to do that.

We don't really eat meat either, so it's shocking but H does take lunch every day so I guess that's accounted for as well. Plus there's some dog food in there (about £50 a month) and we only drink bottled water.

I allow about £60 a week but we always go over so I'd probably guess it's more like £300 a month. H and I will often go and get wine/beer out of our own money though. That's me, H and MissSun who's 3. She eats at my mum's and MIL's 3 times a week and they buy her food so we don't spend as much as we should.

I don't go overboard with shopping, try to get what's on offer and buy value stuff but I seem to be constantly shocked at the price of things. I've recently been to Lidl in an attempt to cut down on the shopping budget.

    That's a mortgage repayment, not a food bill ?

About £75 a month (yep a month) including animal feed but this does creep up in the winter when our stocks get a bit low but we grow everything ourselves and barter our food with neighbours and the local shop.

Cutting down on portion sizes, using leftovers craftly and reducing meat consumption is probably a good place to start.

Actually our mortgage is more than that!! ?

We run a rubbish banger for a car, don't have any kids and no expensive hobbies so for us, food is one luxury we won't skimp on.

We spend between £500 and £600 a month. I'm trying really hard to bring that down, but don't seem to be getting anywhere. Basic things seems to have increased a lot in price.

Around £180-200 at the supermarket plus a takeaway or restaurant meal once a week, £40 on work lunches for 2 adults.

Easiest way to save at the supermarket is to do Martin Lewis' trade down either from Standard brands to Standard own label or Standard own label to Value own label. We've done this on items like ketchup, cereals, salad cream, mayo, canned tomatoes, cheese, biscuits, squash without having to compromise on taste, quality or ingredients.

Also don't not buy on promotion but only buy things you need anyway or can stock up on without worrying about dates such as toiletries, frozen, canned, drink etc.

Swapping supermarkets will only save around 1% as they're all so competitive these days (I read The Grocer trade magazine and they do a weekly price survey).

It's usually between £300 and £350 a month for 5 of us, which includes any cleaning things, loo roll etc. I have got it down to £250 a month when we were struggling, so at the moment it's nice not having to seriously worry.

I sometimes think it's better to shop with a friend/relative and get the 2 for £xxx offers. Sometimes the supermarket might have 2 nets of oranges for £1.50 or something and I think well I don't actually want 2 nets and we'd end up chucking some but if my mum was with me and wanted some we could spend 75p each. I'd rather have the discounted offers than be forced to buy stuff I don't really need and will end up binning IYSWIM

Gosh, a range of figures there...

I do try and get things in deals (Robinson Apple and black currant diluting juice as OH seems to go through it at such a rate) and store up on the dried stuff, think that's why the last few big shops have been expensive. I try and buy things in bulk if I know they'll last like washing powder and fabric conditioner. I so have to go with a list to Costco or we could spend waaayy too much. ?

For 2 adults and one child we're between £350 and £400 per month, that includes toiletries, washing power/conditioner etc. Normally £85 for weeks shop, then pop back to shop mid week for fresh bread etc..

I keep a spreadsheet so I know for sure we spend £250-£300 a month on food, for two adults, not including meals out (every couple of weeks) or the odd day we buy lunch at work, but including cleaning stuff and alcohol. Can be nearer £400 if we've been entertaining a lot or £200 in a frugal month. Could get it down easily enough by buying Value instead of branded but it's not too much for us to spend and we like what we like and enjoy having nice things!

At most for the two of us per month we spend £120. We buy our meat from a local butchers van, frozen food from a frozen food van at a sunday market and a lot of fresh veg from another sunday market. Then a small top up maybe once a month at the supermarket for tinned stuff and juice.

Ours is probably around £600 for 4 of us, including booze, toiletries and the occasional take away.

Thankfully, that is within our means, and we do indulge in nice meat, a veg box and the odd treat. My H works from home, and I almost always take a packed lunch to work/uni so it probably balances out quite well.

We could reduce it to nearer £400 if we had to.

Just checked my bank statement, and have spent £330 in the last month for two of us. That includes most toiletries and cleaning products but probaby could add another £60 on top for what we spend on lunches and takeaways. I do like having nice food in to eat as and when we fancy but, looking at that amount, I feel I need to be a bit more careful.
