What's your earliest memory?

Julesgirl, 5 October, 2008 at 20:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

Just talking to my husband about the fact that our kids will never remember our current home [we've just sold it ? as they are 7 months old and 2 and a half. It's weird to think our son won't remember any of the things we have done with him so far despite them being burned into our minds.

My earliest memory was when I was about 3 years old and I ignored my aunt shouting for me to slow down when leaving nursery and I was almost knocked down by a car. I remember begging her not to tell my mum about it and then she did and I got told off.

What's your earliest memory and how old were you?

My mother tells me I was 2, I remember standing at the top of the stairs in my red and grey striped skirt and top and grey stripes (very specific) and my mother telling me to stay where I was as I had a habit of falling/bouncing down the stairs. We then went over my Aunties house and I sat on oil, getting it all over my beloved skirt. A very specific memory but one still there from 26 years ago.

Mine is learning to walk across the (pretend) zebra crossing at nursery. I loved it and felt so grown up. I must have been about at least 3 years.

My other early memories involve one bee sting and two wasp stings.?

I remember a few things but not sure what age I was. But one memory was when I was either 3 or 4 as my brothers were just babies. I used to slide down the stairs on my stomach face or legs first. But I came up with a brilliant idea of trying to go down the stairs on my 3 wheeler bike.

I ended up at the bottom of the stairs up side down with the bike on top of me and a split tongue. And my mum and dad rushing through to see what I had done.

When I was 3 I remember my brother being born and going to visit him and my mum in hospital. At least I *think* I remember it and I've not just made my own memories up over the years.

I can vividly remember my first day at school. I have recollections of playschool but as mum worked there I'm not sure if that was from when I was there or when I was slightly older.

I was about 2 and a half (my mum told me) and we were on the isle of man on a day trip but it was raining so we had to go to some sort of indoor play area. it was like a huge plastic adventure playground and all the parents sat on these chairs that were like the old style cinema seating. i even remember being in my buggy that day.

Its wierd that i remember that day out of all of them around that time.

My earliest memory was fighting over a doll with a girl at nursery. I was 3 or 4 years old.

I have a pretty good memory of things that happened when I was a child. In fact my brother is 4 years older than me and I can normally remember more than him.

My earliest memory is the day my brother was born. I was 3 1/2 and we were living in Germany, for some reason(maybe because he was coming so quickly) we were in an ambulance, I remember us going so fast and being excited as the lights and noise was all going on as well. I remember my Dad turning up straight from work in his uniform and then I was in a wendy house type thing playing dolls with a little german girl.

I have a very vague memory of being about 3 and a half and going out for a walk with my mum. I remember holding onto the pushchair.

I remember climbing a wooden fort built out of thick round poles - over a huge sandpit (or it seemed huge to me). It was in Berlin and I was about two / two and a bit.

My first ever memory is of being sat a table in a room with a wooden floor and eating star-shaped puffy cereal. It was a strange feeling more than a memory in the back of my head and I thought I had dreamed it so never mentioned it to anyone.

When I was 12 I went to stay with an old next door neighbour who we hadn't seen since I was a todder - this was about 150 miles from Devon where I lived. I walked into their dining room and I instantly recognised it as the room from my memories. I turned to my Mum and said "I've been here before haven't I? When I was a baby?" and she looked like she'd seen a ghost and said yes you were about two years old and you used to stay overnight and then eat breakfast with their children.

So what I thought was just a dream turned out to be my earliest memory.

I remember my godmother making tea in our kitchen in Harare very early in the morning. I was lying in my pram and presumably not yet sleeping through the night so I must have been tiny ?

These memories are fascinating. I expected most of the early memories posted to be quite dramatic (like my bees and wasps). Some of the really early memories (aged 2) are everyday things. I wish I could remember things like that!

The things I remember are just like 'snap shots'. I can't actually remember a whole day that I can pinpoint til I was nearly 4 I reckon (the Christmas I got my firsty Sindy - woo!).

My first proper memory is being at nursery and having the story of the Giant Turnip read out to the group, followed by the nursery nurse giving us all turnip soup.

There is an earlier one - I am in my baby walker with a bowl of food in front of me and my mother is laughing as I am trying to escape. However I must have been tiny, so I am not sure whether its an actual memory or a memory that my mum has shared. Its very vivid though.

I have 2 as i'm not sure what one came 1st.

    1. i remember kneeling in front of the sea chest that my mum had(and still has i believe) and eating chuckie egg out of one ofb those 70's black glass cups and

    2. playing at my nana's as she was looking after me and i was playing with my poseable Kermit and a cot i had and my uncle getting up from the game of scrabble he was playing with nana and putting his face close to mine.

I couldn't have been more than 1 and a half in No.1 and i'm not sure about what age i was in No. 2...

    Jo

Bit sad - I was 4 and it was just after my mum had died and my dad sat me, my brother and sister down and told us mammy had gone to live with the angels.

I'd always recalled visiting an ederly man in hospital with my mum and one of her sisters, and only a couple of years ago I asked my mum about the memory. It was my grandad (her dad) and he died not long after the visit. I was only 2 at the time. I also have some other vague memories from nursery (ages 3-4) but the hospital was the one that has always stood out.

I was just over 3 1/2 and at my local pantomine on Christmas Eve with my mum and nana. It was during the time my mum and dad were starting to split up and we were staying with my grandparents. I was really worried Santa wouldn't know I wasn't at my own house and would leave my presents there instead of where I was, I kept asking if my mum was sure it would be ok and Santa would know. ?

I don't know if most of my memories are actual memories or me remembering things from pictures or stories.

My brother is two years older than me and I do remember walking him to school with my mum before I'd started. I started to tell my mum that 'when I grow into a big boy like ...' and her interupting me and laughing about how that would never happen.

I have a few memories that I think were around the same sort of age (probably about 4/5) like my brother coming home with a pressure bandage on his leg after having his plaster cast off, I thought he was wearing a girls knee sock (!) and also my cousin pushing me down the stairs and having to have stitches in my head (I vividly remember this one!!) and also being sat on the naughty ciar at nursery (must have been 3) for talking during the story, I definitely wasn't talking and have never fully recovered from being wrongly acused [mentally scarred by insignificant event that made me a teachers pet forever more icon]

My first 'proper' memory was the day my Mom left home, I can remember what song was on the radio, what we were all wearing, what car they got into etc etc. I am rubbish at childhood memories though and both of my younger siblings remember far more than I can. Although I do have fabricated 'memories' from talking about certain events that happened so many times!
