When to look for the dress?

mariclare, 7 May, 2010 at 11:43 Posted on Planning 0 8

I am paying for/towards my daughters wedding dress (depends on how much it costs) How long before the big day did you all start going to try dresses on and making the all important descision? I would appreciate your input, thanks.

I'm getting married March 2011. I went to my first bridal shop on 3 April 2010 and ordered my dress from the 3rd bridal shop I went to on 17 April. The dress I have chosen will take ~7months to make/be delivered etc so should be here by Christmas. HTH ?

    Hi!

I started looking (with my Mum - such a special thing to do together!) a year or so before. We did space it out though as were very busy. Think I went once in July, then September, then in December when I finally found The One! I'm getting married in August, so though I didn't want to rush it, I would say try not to leave it much later than 8 months to a year so she doesn't feel rushed if she doesn't find the right one straight away.

    Enjoy! x

Eeek, thats quite a while in advance but if thats what we have to do then we had better get on with it. I didn't know some took 7 months to arrive then it may need alterations, we had better start to have a look round. Thanks.

Hi Welcome to Hitched and your daughter is very lucky to have a mum who is not only prepared to pay/ help towards the cost of her dress but also comes on here to research.

I live in the West Country while my mum lives in London. Once we got engaged I asked my mum to come down for the first weekend that she was free as i wante dthe first time i went dress shopping to be with her. She managed to come down a couple of weeks later and my dress was the irst one i tried on. I am gettign married Feb 2010 so that was 14 montsh before my wedding. Having said that i am syupidly organised and not knowing drives me insane. A dress is obviously very personal and takes some people a long time to find whereas others, like myslef, find 'it' very quickly. It will probably depend on your daughter. Does she have any idea of teh soart of dress she wants? Does she know what feel/ theme she would like? as this would probably influence the type/ style of dress. Persoanlly i would go looking sooner rather than later as it is great fun and gave my mum and myself a lovely day having our first talk about the wedding.

    Good luck

    Hi,

I would say start looking as early as possible, I'm getting married October this year. I had been looking at dresses online since the day after we got engaged and started properly looking and trying on wedding dresses in November 2009, I ended up in a panic by early this year as I still hadn't found 'the one'. I finally ordered my dress at the end of March and it should by in the shop by the end of July.

My advice to all B2B's is no matter how long you think you've got before the big day start planning well in advance. I've made the mistake of thinking I have plenty of time and now I'm worrying that things won't come together!! xxx

whenever you like! Smiley smile We got engaged and set a date within a few days, for 10 months down the line so i went straight away, but its entirely up to you when you go! I dont think its ever too early. Just if someone is indecisive, you dont want to have it ordered and have too much time to maybe go off it and end up not liking it!!

I've only just ordered my dress and wedding date is 2/10/10. They said I really needed to have it ordered 5 months before though 4 months would still be OK but I'd have to pay extra 'rush' fees.
