When you have a smear test

sherry, 23 March, 2009 at 11:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Do you wait to hear the result from the GP?

I had a coloscopy on the 24th Feburary to remove (once again) my abnormal cells and a smear. I have never ever had a normal smear test and im traeted at the hospital under a consultant.

I haven't heard back any results and wondered whether it is normal to hear back if they are normal or do you just wait for the GP to contact you?

Also I suspect with everything in the media about smears recently the demand has gone up so maybe my results are not readily available yet and it's not been long enough.

I don't know if procedures vary in different locations but I received a letter after my smear last year telling me that it was all clear. Think it arrived about 4 weeks after.

Might be worth contacting your GP just to find out.

I don't think I've ever had results back so have always just assumed they were normal.

Would be interested to know if other people get results back even if they are normal.

They may not have the results yet, phone them and ask.

I've always had a letter to say everything was fine.

It can take a few months forresults to comeback but call and ask your GP's office.

At my old Drs I only ever heard anything if it wasn't normal. My new Drs send the results either way. Had a smear in January, got the results last week.

Ive rung the GP (finally got through) and they said that they send results either way. If done at the surgery they are taking about 6-8 weeks to come back. As mine were done at the hospital it could be longer as the results may go to the surgery first (altho the receptionist wasn't sure).

Either way I will get to find out but it could be 3 weeks or so yet.

I also get a letter a few weeks after to say everything is normal.

However, when I get a blood test done for one thing or another and the results are normal, then I don't get a letter. In those cases, they would only let me know if there is something wrong

I can't believe some surgeries only contact you if there is an abnormality! what a lot of fuss and bother that must cause.

I also have always had a letter, 3 weeks ago after the test. I've had quite a few performed by consultants due to other problems and if anything they've come through more quickly as were taken at hospital.

I had an abmormal smear about 3 years ago and have been being treated at the colposcopy clinic at a London hospital (I live in Sussex) ever since - well until I got an all clear in July 08 and confirmation that I don't need to go back until July 09.

Although I got the results back very quickly from the hospital, they have never informed my GP that I have seen them, despite having the GP's details - so have been getting regular calls and reminders each time I see my GP/Midwife (am currently 6 months pregnant) about being overdue for a test.

Each time I tell them the whole story and you'd think they'd update my notes - but no! I finally gave the practise nurse at the GPs copies of all the letters from the colsposcopy clinic so hopefully they will make a note now.

Still, I am glad in a way that they do keep reminding me - if I was due for a smear I think I would find it hard to ignore them!

I've always had a letter sent regardless of the result

I think the last time it did take about 6 weeks to come through though
