The truth: We knew each other online through a student forum, though there was no hint of any romance there - I already had a boyfriend. We then had a big group meet-up in Oxford (where he was at uni), got outrageously drunk and got it on.

The official story: I went to visit some friends in Oxford, went to a party and met him there. This is sort of true.

Quite a few people know the real version now, but the official one is still what comes out whenever anyone asks!

His story... We went to the same uni, same course, lived in the same halls for the furst year. So when I started work at the same company as him (nearly 200 miles from uni) he recognised me.

My story... Some wierd dude says in my first day in a new job 'I recognise you, we went to uni together, you were in the same halls and course as me, do you remember me?' I say 'No' the romance blossomed from there!

I met my OH when I was sitting in his living room breastfeeding my son while chatting with his wife!!

Its the truth and what I tell people. OH always says the first time he met me I flashed my boobs at him lol

We didn't become a couple until after he got divorced however and I was a single parent so no improprieties occurred ?

He was playing a gig with his band when I first saw him.

Curly hair, skinny jeans, a guitar and singing his heart out. Did it for me then and still does 5 years later. ? I told him the night I met him I loved him.

We tell everyone the same thing, I'm not ashamed to admit it really was love at first sight for me.

A cheesy backpacker bar in Sydney, he saved me from some sleazy Frenchmen who wouldn't leave me alone, and he was there because his friends wanted to go 'grab a tourist'.lovely.

I was wondering this too. There isn't any shame in meeting online, a lot of people do... I don't see why people would feel they have to lie about it.

I'll be honest and say that I can't remember our first meeting. I used to work with a good friend of his who introduced us, which must be over 10yrs ago. I thought as he was a DJ, he was too cool for me Smiley smile but we only started dating just over 18 months ago, after he finally split from his ex (whom everyone in our circle of friends could see he hadn't been happy with for ages!)

There is no shame, however my family have really old fashioned views about the internet, and i didnt want them to judge my o.h on it. Perhaps it will come out as a confession one day, but its just not a accepted thing by my parents. My friends know though and my best friend also met somebody on pof.

My sister is good friends with his brother and sister in law.

First met him when I was 16 at the beer tent at Silverstone. Fancied him for years (thought he was too good looking for me!) and when I split up with my ex he made a move (although he claims I made the first move!)

Truth: His sister and my housemate were both on the same MFA degree programme at Leeds Uni. h2b and I both went to their final degree show, where the free wine flowed. But we didn't actually notice each other there (my friend and his sister weren't close friends). After the show ended, everyone headed to a notorious student pub just off campus, and at some point in the evening my friend walked up to me and said "F's brother is really nice, you should go talk to him!" so I went over, plopped myself down next to him, and started quoting random EddieIzzard quotes at him. We then had to escape the pub when ants started crawling out of the booths (!), and headed to a nightclub in Leeds. at this point there was a group of about 8 of us. My friend went home, but left her camera with us. She was a mild-mannered catholic girl, so we thought it would be funny to take risque pics with her camera, so i ended up sitting on his lap and snogging him, and then snogging his sister!! When we finally headed back up to campus, I gave him my number. He later admitted that he was too drunk to remember my name, and put me in his phone as "girl"! We started talking on fb and AIM, and a couple of weeks later I came to Manchester for our first official "date".

Official: We met at an art show. Which IS kinda the truth, just a more sanitized version!

There's nothing really shameful about meeting someone online now, but 7 years ago it was still considered a bit weird (in my circle of friends anyway). I had always kept my forum life private so couldn't bring myself to suddenly "out" such a big part of my life. A few people found out over the years as it was a large forum and I was a fairly prominent member for a few years, so it came up on Google quite easily, but I have never been very open about it, perhaps wrongly.

I met my H online, and I tell people I don't know that well (work colleagues etc) that we met on a night out in London as we were both students in London at the time. Online dating is becoming increasingly common, but a lot of people still see it is something desperate saddos do, and I'd rather not deal with the "judgement" if they are that kind of person.

Similarly, if I was going to a Hitched meet I wouldn't tell everyone I know that I'm meeting up with Internet weirdie mates from a wedding forum.

Very first met my OH when I bumped into a mutual friend and him when out shopping, she took me to one side and asked me if I wanted to snog him to cheer him up because him and his girlfriend had just split up, I was 14 and hadn't had my first kiss so said no and virtually sprinted off! Then around a year later a different mutual friend gave him my email address and we started talking on MSN, he'd got a girlfriend by then but soon made it clear he liked me, we started hanging out together in a big group of friends and a few months down the line he split up with his girlfriend and we kissed at a party then a week later we decided we were boyfriend and girlfriend it's our cheesey teenage love story and I love it!

I do shorten it generally just to say we met through a mutual friend when we were in our teens, not because I'm ashamed but don't think anyone's particularly interested and just saying that usually leads to the "How long have you been together then?!" question anyway!

I met my OH on Uniform Dating and don't mind telling anyone. There have been a few negative comments but it worked for us. Similarly when we had our boudoir shoot I told a few people that it was a Hitch thing but others I wouldn't. The conversation would perhaps end 'so....you're going to strip to your underwear along with people you've never met...' I guess it only makes sense to some.

I genuinely don't remember him that night, l think he thinks l am winding him up about this fact! We properly met in a pub in London about 4 years later by which time l was single.

We 'met' for the first time at the wedding of two of my school friends. The Groom went to university with my H. I say 'met' as we didn't actually speak to each other that night but saw each other when we were collecting cars from the venue the next day.

He took me back there for dinner a few years later and proposed to me in the same spot, so technically we got engaged in a car park!

I have no shame in telling people I met him online, not sure why people feel the need to lie about that. It's a common way of meeting people now.

My thoughts exactly. I would struggle to meet anyone through my friends who are all very settled down and it really isn't appropriate in my line of work meeting people at work.

The story : As my marriage broke down my best friend helped me through it all, a few months later we got drunk and realised we actually liked each other more than friends and everything I had wanted in my life was in front of me!!!

The truth : My marriage was a shambles and I was horribly unhappy but didn't want to leave as was so scared of being homeless / alone / a failure. I turned to my friends for support and my dear friend mark ended up being the one who got my drunken breakdown of how unhappy I was. After a few months of me confiding in my friends one day I realised that actually I could find somewhere to live and I would have my friends. And actually there could even be someone who could genuinely make me happy. So I took a punt and we seperated. I moved in with a couple friend for a few weeks and then into a house share with a work friend. I continued to stick to my friends like glue and it soon became apparent that I'd made the right decision and that my feelings we're mutual.

We kept it low key for a while and held back for some time as it felt weird. Then we did get drunk and the whole world knew we were together.

To be honest went rather well as 2 1/2 years later we're engaged, I smile every day, I have a gorgeous son and am only 6 weeks away from meeting our daughter :-)

The Story: We met in a mental institution and moved in together the day we met (whoever is telling the story always makes the other one the 'patient').

The Truth: We met when we volunteered together for a mental health charity in the USA. Technically we did move in together the day we met as we were the only 2 volunteers there sharing volunteer accommodation. He says it was love at first sight and proposed within 2 weeks of us meeting. It was a bit more of a slow burn for me, so I turned him down. I had to wait 4 years for the next proposal - that'll teach me!

We met when we were very young maybe 4/5 ish. His gran childminded my brother and I. We met again when we both went through a bit of a crap time and ended up working at the same place as our second job. We got close and it all happened quickly - he asked me out and I said no, he was with someone else for a bit and when they broke up, we got together. It was serious very quickly and we were in love very soon after getting together. I really really disliked him in school and everyone was surprised we ended up together!! I like our story!
