Where do you do your big shop?

*Mini*, 4 September, 2011 at 20:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 38

Because my CBM is trying to convince me that Sainsburys is not more expensive than Tescos? I dont believe her.

I hate shopping somewhere "new", I cant find anything and I end up spending more. On line does not work for me either- I just get annoyed.

I also wouldnt dream of shopping in Morrisons, not sure why, I think its the rubbish layout. Asda makes me sad- the one here is like a waiting room for Jeremy Kyle.

Just being nosy really...

I HATE all supermarkets - they're always full of screaming kids, old ladies who leave their trolleys in the middle of the aisle, people standing gossiping in front of the shelf I want to get to, special offers that are out of stock and blokes who have no idea which aisles are which.

That said I shop at Tescos - with the clubcard points it works out as cheap as Asda. Adsa is cheapest (unless you count Lidl/Netto etc), Sainsburys is deffo more expensive than Tescos.

    Sainsburys mostly...

Occasionally ASDA but I can't stand it in there, Tesco is too far in the opposite direction.

I don't really find them that much more expensive tbh, lots of good deals and I find their meat fresher than our Tescos and ASDA.

After payday we do a stock-up shop but as we have a very small kitchen and very very little storage, we can't do a huge shop. We also buy a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables so we just do weekly shops or whatever.

I shop in Asda. It's the closest store to me. Tescos is across the other side of town. My Asda is a big Wal-Mart one though and its in a nice area near a private estate so we don't get Jeremy Kyle rejects in there as often. We also have a Morissons nearby that we never use because it's smaller and a bit further down the road. Tescos we like using because of the Clubcard points. Sainsbury's I only ever use if I'm on my way into or out of the town centre.. I do prefer Sainsbury's.. the stuff is better quality.. but it's so far out of my way and I do find it more expensive than Asda so for the purposes of laziness, I mostly use Asda.

Tesco, I like the clubcard points! But I do it online as cannot stand the actual shop, full of screaming kids and chavs...though as it is only 1 mile away I do feel like a complete lazy cow and I am sure the delivery drivers judge me!

Asda, mainly as it's the closest to us.

There is a Sainsbuggers close to Asda, but crossing one extra road is just far too much effort with 4 kids in tow.

Main shop is usually Tesco's home delivery. For odds and ends during the week I have a Sainsburys Local, Happy Shopper or Mr Patel's little corner shop all within a 10 minute walk.

By going home a different way on the bus I can get to the big Morrisons in Camberwell, which I rather like. There's also a poundland or similar there which can be handy - as can the McDonalds.

Sometimes I'll go to the big Tesco on Old Kent Road or at the bottom of Brixton Hill although both can be a bit of a scrum sometimes, and every time we go to Asda we seem to manage to spend twice as much on things we don't really need but like the look of.

The thing I like about home delivery is that you tend to spend less because you can only buy what you think of, rather than seeing things you like the look of. Spent £42 this week as I got the delivery fee refunded as he was 30 minutes late. They didn't have the oatmeal topped rolls we like, so they substituted it with... nothing. But the loaf of bread I also ordered will do just fine for the week.

Need to start thinking about our honeymoon home delivery - they deliver to the farmhouse we're staying in, so all we need to get on the way is nibbles for the journey then everything will arrive a few hours after we do. I can think of better things to do after a six hour drive than trawl round a supermarket. I'm not even sure where the nearest one is either.

As we don't have a car, we do a monthly Tesco shop for all the heavy stuff (which always seems to inolve a crate of Fosters - guess who's in charge of the order in our house?!). We've done Adsa a couple of times but their delivery's awful, at least an hour late if it turns up at all.

We do a weekly shop too, but living where we do, we're a bit limited. So here's my Jeremy Kyle confession...

....most of our shopping is done at Aldi and Iceland

I used to do Sainsbury's but got bored and fed up of getting nectar points worth zilch and spending a fortune with hardly any shopping so I go to Tesco's more often now. They seem to have more choice of deli foods/ethnic foods and cheaper options and I love my clubcard vouchers. I love Lidl for fruit & veg and Asda for the wine offers but agree it is depressing when you see some of the people in there.

We use Sainsburys online for our main shop and top up with Asda as it's much easier to get to.

We tried using Asda but found we were actually spending more - doing it onlne helps me budget.

Believe it or not, we did a test shop at each just after we moved in, asda, tesco and sainsburys!! we made a list of everyday stuff (milk, bread, cheese etc) and bought the same at each over a three or four week period. Sainsburys was definatly more expensive and asda cheaper!! but you can tell from the quality....sainburys basics is better then asda basics!

I used to work with a women whos husband worked as a quality control head manager at a fruit and veg distribution warehouse... all the fruit they had came in had to be sorted in to top quality (for waitrose and M&S), good quality (sains) and quality (tesco./asda)..ultimately this all came from the same place tho! obviously this doesnt apple to everything but makes u think!

In answer to mini......Tesco...even tho asda is opposite my work i cant be deaing with it, yes, im a snob

Ocado for our big shop (ordered online), Tesco Express/Co-op for things we run out of during the week, local butcher/fishmonger for meat and fish and greengrocer/deli for fruit and veg.

When I first moved to Portsmouth I was chuffed because there was an Asda near me, thing I've found is, with their £1, £2 and £3 items the costs soon mount up. And like a previous poster mentioned, it is like a Jeremy Kyle waiting room....

I have been going to Tesco, the one in Havant has the cheapest petrol in the area and its a nice big one. I go there about 7.30 on a Sat morning when i drop OH off to work. Lovely and quiet. Also, we're saving up our clubcard points to get my wedding ring from Goldsmiths ?

We use Tesco every weekend and go in, but we are thinking of doing online - to keep in budget - we do weekly shop and then h will happily pop in there many times during the week so the spend in Tesco's per month is horrific!

i like Sainsburys and M&S - H doesn't, we buy from Waitrose too, depending on what we need, but our meat is bought from independant butchers.. Gutted we dont have independant fishmongers - we use waitrose usually.

I hate Morrison and Asda - fortunately we dont have Morrison anywhere near us, and we have a brand new Asda but wont step foot in there ?

Asda, as it's the second nearest.

Sainsbury's is nearer but it's full of students and they drive me mad!

What the hell is everyone's problems with Asda?!

We have one nearby but it's quite small so we dont go there. There is a large one about a 15/20 minute drive away which is really nice and we always spend less there. If it was closer we would go there every week.

Just because I would shop in Asda doesnt make me a Jeremy Kyle candidate.

We have a big Asda near us and I love it. It's not chavvy, I always see someone I know (husband doesn't like this as I stand there chatting to them!) and I know where everything is. More importantly their chart paperbacks are currently 3 for £10 and if I buy non food items from Asda, it's almost like I'm not buying them as they get hidden in the trolley...

I would never, ever touch Asda home delivery again. Bunch of jokers! As for the Asdas I've been in they've looked a mess and it seems to be full of offers encouraging you to buy far too much. I'm never impressed with their veg, their meat counter tends to be small with little choice and they frown at you if you ask for more plastic bags. I do like their ethnic food aisles though.

Asda is great I just wish there was one closer to me so until my knee is better I'll be going to Tesco. I could do it online but make a point of physically going as my physio wants me to get out the house. I spend almost £200 a week on groceries it is non stop feeding at the zoo!

Big shop is usually Tesco but this is supplemented by Waitrose and other shops. I don't mind Asda for certain bits, but don't buy meat there as they don't really do free range & the quality of it isn't great. Really like their homeware though - and the fact most of the shoppers have beards (that's just the women).

We shop at Tesco, even though I personally prefer Morrison’s but logistically it makes sense to shop at Tesco, I love Asda stuff for things like mango chutney, ketchup all the condiments because you can get them for a £1 each! but I do want to try Aldi, a few of our mates shop there, and I have tasted things they have cooked using stuff from Aldi and its always been lovely, they say its great if you know what’s good but some stuff isn’t so nice, apparently the fruit and veg is really good and so cheap! Hubby isn’t as keen but I think it may be worth a try.

I do like Aldi.. not so much Lidl. But my closest Aldi is miles away. I live in a private estate about 4 miles north of the town centre where the Tescos, Sainsburys, Morissons and Aldi's are. Asda Wal-Mart is in the shopping park up near the estate I live in. It would be silly to go elsewhere unless I'm heading into town anyway.

We used to do ours at Tescos, or have the home delivery, but lately we've been going to Sainsburys. For some reason their meat seems to be a bit better than Tescos as the moment.

We're quite lucky in that we have quite a few large supermarkets local to us so we have a good choice. We did pop into Asda a few weeks ago though and I certainly won't be going back there in a hurry. I refused to buy their fruit and veg, it looked disgusting. I'm sure there are nice Asdas around though!

We do our big shop at Costco, about twice a year. Everything else we get at Asda as it's just down the road. However it is hell on earth, long queues and really busy. We also go to Lidl which I love for it's randomness and cheap fruit and veg.
