Where to start with DIY invites?

carolineT, 5 September, 2011 at 12:54 Posted on Planning 0 10

As the title says, I'm hoping to make my own invites but I don't have a clue where to start. I've seen that some of you have made your own and they look great, but have you used a template or something? I also want to get hold of card which is two colours, and don't know where to look for this - I want a red card with a thick white or cream stripe running across the centre - any ideas where I might find this? Any help on doing your own invites would be great! thanks!

    Hi

Firstly, do your research. Look for designs that you like and then narrow ones down that are within your own capability and that you have the equipment to finish (no good looking at embossed ones if you don't know how to emboss or have the tools available to do it kind of thing!!) as buying equipment to do some things obviously adds to the cost.

If you are looking at printed invites, make sure the card you buy can go through your printer both in thickness and in size.

To do what you want, you will probably need to go for red card and buy extra cream card which you layer of the red to get the stripe running across the centre if that makes sense?

Hobbycraft and other general craft supply shops are great for inspiration and for you see and feel things at first hand. Even if you don't end up buying from there, do check them out.

Do you know roughly what the cost difference is between DIY and not? I'm assuming it wouldn't cost more than £100 if you do them yourself?

It totally depends what you want on what it costs.

The ones I made were from Vista print, it saved the stress of me messing them up, you can have a look at what I made here, it's all the stationery I've made https://www.flickr.com/photos/25919016@N08/sets/72157627560531364/with/6098966083/

Wow, they're really lovely! So you can import anything you want on vistaprint and they just print it out for you? I may have to go take a look. Thanks.

I designed my own invites and don't have an artistic bone in my body!! I purchased some black card from tesco, some feathers/beads/ribbon from ebay. I've actually shocked myself even though there quite simple!! Still drafting but this is what me and my partner have come up with so far! Sorry for the big pic!!

That's a difficult one to answer really as it depends on what you want to how many you want. The more time and detail that goes into the invite, the more expensive it is going to be.

The invites I make start at 75p each.

You need to factor in the cost of buying material and the standard tools including cutting mat, knife, ruler, glue etc etc plus all the material you will buy before hand before deciding on a design (sample card, different embellishments etc) these all add up including any mistakes you may make along the way (producing prototypes etc).

A Lot of stationers offer a free bespoke design service to design something specific to you whilst keeping within your budget.

I also offer a free sample with any bespoke design so that you can see it in the flesh before deciding on anything.

Buying something professionally created doesn't automatically mean that it has a huge pricetag.

You need to weigh up whether you have the time to do them yourself and the experience.

Yep anything you like. I got permission from the artist to use her picture and the leave happened to be on their site so it was perfect although I messed about with their leaves to get it to do what I wanted it to.

We already know what we're after - something like this -

Is something like this possible? Do you have a rough idea of what this might cost? Thanks, Caroline

? Thanks. The picture is the same as the art we have all over the house so it's very us, plus we didn't want summer looking invitations with it being an autumn wedding we wanted it to match!
