I wouldn't waste the money on having them printed for a civil ceremony personally. I think they are only useful in church where you need the words to sing the hymns. As for the timings of the day - perhaps you could make a big board with them on, about the size of a seating plan board, and display it where guests arrive at your venue? If you DIY it that would be cheaper than printing a load of order of service booklets.

Order of Service , If civil, and your having readings, then it lets people know whos speaking - what the peices are and they can keep for memory boxes - I am sure older relatives , mates and such like this thing.

We are putting ours together this weekend and will be putting these things in and advising of the names of music playing etc etc

I'm not actually having an order of service! We're getting married in a registry office so didn't think it necessary. I also didn't want to be too hung up on timings or orders of which things will happen - just going with the flow!

PS - I do think they're appropriate for more formal weddings, though and obviously church weddings where there are hymns, readings etc

You could always just have a large sheet with the timings on a board somewhere, we don't often see them handed out individually at a civil ceremony. They tend to be called "Order of the day" rather than order of service too, as an order of service relates to a church ceremony with readings & hymns etc, rather than the running order for the whole day.

Definitely useful to have - always amazes me how many guests go to check in straight after the ceremony when it's time for the drinks reception and photos!
