Where would you recommend? Honeymoon issues!

Chedi, 15 November, 2012 at 09:48 Posted on Planning 0 10

Sorting out our honeymoon is doing my head in right now! OH seems to be happy with anywhere and I just dont want to pick wrong, if you know what I mean!

We're looking at being able to do Sat 1st June to Tue 11th June..but we're going to be arriving in Milan from somewhere on the 7th til 8th June, possibly extending it til the 11th.

Sooo... I need to find somewhere to go til the 6th June! Thats 5 full days, with the 1st and 7th being travelling.

I've been looking at Naples and the island of Capri - but also maybe Nice too with a day trip to Monaco?

My issues with both of these are that Milan is Italy, so I didnt really want to spend the whole time in one country - and Nice is France, which I'm doing Paris for my hen do and we've both been to France before. I've looked at Spain, cities like Madrid or Barcelona - possibly feeling more Barcelona due to the location, but they're such big cities, and we're already doing Milan, which makes Capri look good again - to then go to the whole, we're already doing Italy! Eugh! I cant win!

I have also looked at doing Nice to Naples during the 1st to 7th but that'll get expensive in more flights but also spending more time having to travel!

Is there a reason you don't want to spend your whole time in one country or countires you have already been to?

The locations you have mentioned all sound lovely and even though some may be in the same country or countries you have already visited you will have a very different experience. For example Nice abnd Paris are poles apart.

Milan and Capri sounds like the option you are leaning towards. I say go for it. Sounds amazing!!

It would be good to understand why you don't want to stick to one country. If it is food related (holiday's are all about good food for me!) then you may find Nice not enough of a contrast. I loved the mini holiday I had in Nice a few years ago but I was surprised at how Mediterranean the food was compared to more traditional french food. There was alot of pastafor example.

What are you wanting to get out of your honeymoon? A mix of city break and beach?

What about one of the Balearics? Then you get Spanish beach holiday and Italian city.

Agreed. Nice is very Italian in history and present culture. The food and the architecture are perfect examples of this influence. I had five days there (with a day trip to Monaco) and it was the right amount of time.

In your position, and a need to be in Milan on a specific date, I'd be looking at Capri, Sardinia or Corsica for a beachy/scenic five days.

Sorry I should have said. Its just mainly the though of being able to do a couple of counties in one holiday as we hardly ever go abroad. The last time we left the UK was back in 2009 and that was Belgium.

thanks for the ideas so far, I'll look them up when I'm home from work again.

Italy is gorgeous. I would recommend Verona for at least a day - it has really beautiful scenery which is quite romantic, the only thing is that it's quite tourist trappy. However it is nigh on impossible to get a bad glass of red wine there. There's a small wine bar off the beaten track that makes its own ... oh my GOD it is amazing. If you're interested I'll get you the name of that x

Nice is beautiful and is definitely on my honeymoon list. Stay in the Negresco hotel if you choose Nice!

I know you said you didn't want to do the whole time in Italy, but I would REALLY suggest going to Venice, and then maybe doing a wine tour of tuscany.

Venice is the most amazing city on the planet, full stop! I was all set to move there after my masters, but this stupid person proposed to me and I had to stay in England and didn't go Smiley sad Ahh well, I've been a few times and I'll go again. I never get tired of just aimlessly wandering from square to square, over little bridges, and then bam! you're in St Mark's Square, or at the Rialto Bridge, or church of the Frari (which, by the way, has the world's most beautiful painting as its main altarpiece).

I've stayed in places from hostels to 5* hotels on the islands to themainland in Mestre, and for honeymoon I would highly suggest a nice hotel on the island, but on the north side in Cannareggio, as it's not far from the train station and a little quieter, but still within a short walking distance of anywhere in Venice.

And now you're probably going to ignore this, but maybe I've inspired someone to go. Go to Venice! But be sure to spend money in as many cultural sites as possible - they need it for constant upkeep and conservation efforts.

We went to Nice and Corsica on honeymoon. Corsica is gorgeous (we stayed in Calvi) but you may want more than 5 days there! Nice is an excellent base for exploring the South of France as the bus is a euro in any direction for as far as you want to travel!

We bit the bullet and have just booked it all. Mon to Fri in Capri and Naples (possibly visit Pompeii), and Fri to Tue in Milan. Came in under budget too which'll go towards ferry, buses and 'city tax'.

if you read my thread about BA and Easyjet, we went BA for the Gatwick to Naples then Easyjet for Naples to Milan to then Gatwick again.

thank you for all the help and suggestions! I really wish we had more time to do more!
