Which blue?

cw2b, 8 October, 2013 at 17:55 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi!

I joined Hitched a couple of months ago and have been reading through all the others posts which have been really helpful but today is my first post.

I am going to be getting my bridesmaids Dessy dresses and we are going shopping in a few weeks. The colour scheme has changed about 3 times but at the moment I am thinking blue! In the Dessy range I like sailor and midnight, but I wonder how true the colour is to that on the screen? I worry that midnight maybe too dark but sailor may be too bright.

I was just after your opinions on these colours and if anybody is having either/or seen either of these colours? Also from your experiences, how true is the colour on screen to that of the actual dress?

This won't seem very helpful (but it is): it completely depends on the calibration of your screen. My screen might display colours differently to yours.

I also have some seemingly unhelpful but actually helpful 'advice'.

Have you been in to a shop which stocks the dresses and thought about asking if they have those colors in stock? I think that would be the best way to check the colour as I think colours on computers never look the same as real life.

    This!

I got sidetracked by bridesmaid dresses on my lunch break today and the shop I was in stocked Dessy dresses. They had a booklet of fabric samples in all the colours, so it might be worth finding your local stockist to look at the colours in person.

I appreciate I really need to look in the shop but won't have the chance until I go shopping with the bridesmaids. From past experience of being a bridesmaid I know the colour swatches are tiny and if the shop doesn't stock any dresses in that colour it can be hard to decide. Suppose I will just have to wait until we go shopping ?

FWIW - which is not that much for the reasons mentioned above - I prefer the sailor blue. The midnight looks like a dark/navy blue to me while the sailor is more of a purpley mid blue, not too bright at all.

I've worn a dessy bridesmaid dress in blue. I can send you photos of how mine looked on the day, it was sailor blue. The midnight blue looked black when photographed so my sister went for sailor. Her colur theme was navy blue and although they were a little light no one noticed and they looked perfect in the photos.

I had midnight blue Dessy bridesmaid dresses and they didn't photograph black at all. It is a 'true' navy if you see what I mean. Might be too dark for some but I liked it.

I think it very much depends on the photographer. When my sister got married I was a wedding photographer at the time and she took me to book her photographer. I'd seen his work and how he "photoshoped" his photo's, he would have made them look black. Some may not use photoshop that much (mine doesn't use it at all) In that case midnight is very close to navy but still on the dark side I think. Its personal taste though. Both colours are lovely and very wearable. Shoes were easy to find, we all worn gray satin to match the groom.

I really would try and avoid being too stuck on a specific colour before you hit the shops. That's not to say you won't end up with the colour you originally wanted, but I found that with Dessy that how I felt about a particular colour sometimes depended on the fabric (e.g. I would like a shade in one fabric but not the same shade in a different colour).
