Which photographer would you go for?

soontobehismrs, 18 October, 2012 at 15:11 Posted on Planning 0 20

We've narrowed our choices down from around 20 to these 5 - what one does everybody prefer?

http://www.peppermintlove.com/index.html

https://annelieeddyphotography.co.uk/

http://www.deliamcdonaghphotography.com/blog/

http://www.littlejewel.co.uk/

https://www.rebeccaweddingphotography.co.uk/

There is one that stands out for us, but would just like everybody elses opinion.

Thank you!

I would say go with your gut, and someone who when you meet them you 'click' with. xx

I think it would be hard for others to choose. Everyone likes photographs done in a different way. Why dont you meet with all 5, and see which one you prefer?

    Might be a better option.

I can never really tell the difference between professional photographers so I'd go with someone you've met and liked. (Or the cheapest ?)

    I like http://www.deliamcdonaghphotography.com the best.

The others were either a bit too vintagey or they didn't have enough examples of natural, reportage photography for my tastes.

I think her price is very reasonable too.

Each one had their merits but this is my opinion from a quick flick through. (I'm no Pro Tog though!)

http://www.peppermintlove.com/index.html - Some lovely compositions but some of the saturation values seem a little over cooked on some shots. Difficult to tell as have not seen a whole album.

https://annelieeddyphotography.co.uk/ - too few pics to make a decision, would need to see a whole album. The ones shown look ok though.

http://www.deliamcdonaghphotography.com/blog/ - A good selection to look through, almost a whole album at one wedding. Shots look consistent throughout (Although the shots of the ceiling when FOB walked in irritated me, as did the extra blur added to an avenue of trees, but that's just me being picky). I like this one the best.

http://www.littlejewel.co.uk/ - Some lovely compositions. Some images seem cold.

https://www.rebeccaweddingphotography.co.uk/ - The filters used on some of them I don't like too much, but again that's down to taste.

I'd say you'd need to meet them. Have a chat and a look through a complete album.

Hi, I think Delia McDonagh looks great!

I'm just wondering how you found her? I ask because it looks like she's based in SW England (?) and I'm in Cambridge, which I guess would be too far! But I'm looking for a similar style.

Emma we live in Cambridgeshire, but are getting married in Wiltshire. We (I mean I) typed in everything possible. Photographers in south west england, photographers in south of england, photographers in wiltshire, photographers in Salisbury. Got a few but some of them just didn't have the emotion I'm after!

If I was choosing for me, I'd go for number 3. They seem to have the best overall look, lots of photos and the best price. I looked through sooo many and ended up choosing the ones with the best quality/price balance. The first guy we met with had great albums and the photos were so much better in real life than on the website. OH really liked him and they had a good old natter so that made up my mind for me because OH is VERY fussy about new people.

Without looking at prices and without looking at any other replies my initial preference is either of these two:

My favourite is number 4, but you do need to see who you click with. I met some TOG's who are really good, but they just weren't my sort of people, so wouldn't have been comfortable with them shooting our wedding. The guy we've hired is just as crazy as I am, so we get on really well! It's a plus that his work is amazing too!

Looking at the sites really quickly, and without reference to the price, the following things stand out

    They are all women

They all show relitivly few weddings, and don't appear to have been doing this for a long time

They all seem to do "vintage" but none show a real depth in the work... nothing stands out and says wow

While it is important to "click" with the photographer, you need to see past the girlie appeal, and look at them as photographers. What is the work like, are they consistent, is there depth and maturity in the work, is there a definite style to what they do that makes you go "yea this one stands head and sholders over the rest of them?

One thing that really stands out from my point of view is that nearly all my enquiries start with "I really love your work" They book me because they love my work. Personality and price are important, but delivering what you want, how you want it is even more impotant

    Why does this matter?

I think expecting a wow moment about a photographer is a bit weird. Nothing about a photographer would make me say wow, unless the were shockingly bad. It's the subject of the photos that usually get the wows.

I suspect (hope) that this was simply an observation rather than a negative comment.

FWIW I have always maintained that the best person for any job is the best person for that job regardless of anything else.

If you have narrowed it down to these 5 then see if you can meet up with any of them. Email them and ask to see a full client gallery too so you can see a whole wedding.

It was an observation, as Peter eluded. Nothing sinister. It is just quite "mathematically" unusual to come up with a short-list of all women from what is a very male dominated profession - if you are only looking at the work. I was trying to make the OP think about "why" they are choosing - is it "the quality of the work, then the personality" or the "personality then the work"

I personally feel it is a shame that it is a male dominated profession, as women photographers sometimes have a different perspective on things.

I don't give a monkies if the photographer is a woman, man gay straight green brown or white, I only care about the work, and then how they come over on the day when doing the job. Of course you need both.

Getting the real personality of the person, from just a website is hard,. You usually only really get to know if you click with the person at a meeting or over the phone or both, which is your next step
