Which reception venue would you go for? *FLASH*

Mrs*W*2B, 20 May, 2012 at 16:22 Posted on Planning 0 33

We love it, we are planning a 2pm ceremony followed by champagne and canapes (we can provide our own free of charge!) and ALL our formal pics etc will be taken here...

so we have been looking for a reception venue where we will arrive around 4.30pm (ish) have a sit down 3 course meal for 80 and then an evening buffet and disco for 150 total...we have a fairly small budget overall and as we will be having all our main pics taken at the ceremony venue, the reception venue doesn't have to be WOW...at the moment we have 2 possibilities...a country pub or a golf club function room...

They both have outdoor space (summer wedding) and they are both very similar prices and can hold our numbers etc we are now wondering which one to go for as we like them both equally...so just looking for some outsiders votes!

The country pub...

or the golf club...

now as i say i KNOW that neither are big fancy venues but for our budget we are happy...the pub is obviously more homely, character etc but would be a tad more cramped and the golf club is very neutral, not much character (more conferency) but can be done up and that will be with round tables....

the pub we would have exclusive use of but the golf club would have other members walking around and using the other facilities/outdoor space etc....Both places serve nice food (the pub is more of a restaurant-pub than a deep fried food pub...

any votes as a guests which you would prefer?? distance is also similar from ceremony!

I would definitely prefer the the wobbly beamed pub because it has bags of character, looks absolutely lovely inside and you also get it exclusively. Plus the garden looks beautiful. Don't worry if you think it will be a bit cramped, it would just add to the character.

The golf club looks a bit plain and corporate to me.

Your venue doesn't have to be flashy to have a good time...I actually like the look of the country pub one. Is there space for people to dance?

I prefer the pub and if you get exclusive use I'd definitely go for that.

I prefer the pub, and I wouldnt worry about being squashed in. I always think people overestimate how much space they need, and then people are too spread out and it looks sparse, nicer to be all in close together i think.

I also think the pub has tons more character, and I think in terms of a party atmosphere you're better off being slightly cramped in an intimate room than being in a sparse, slightly bland one.

The pub gets my vote too, not a fan of the gold club looks very corporate and as you are on a budget would you end up spending more dressing it up, where as the pub has loads of quirky features already.

What type of evening entertainment are you having? My vote goes for the pub if there's space for entertainment and dancing if that's what your having. ?

As someone else said you could dress the golf club up to suit your style but it will definitely add to the budget. But if the pub can accommodated all your guests and entertainment requirements then I'd personally go with that as it has loads more character already built in which is fabulous and means you'll not be shelling out to spruce it up.

The pub is gorgeous (and should have generally good bar prices) - and I only ever considered places where you get exclusive use as I really don't like the idea of having people I don't know wondering about.

Definitely the pub - I don't like the golf club at all, it looks like a 90s leisure centre. The pub is beautiful and full of character; I would so much prefer to attend a wedding there.

I am going to go against the popular vote and say golf club! I prefer open, minimalist and lots of big light airy rooms. I just think it looks more neutral and spacious and you could decorate it beautifully. Also would they do more for you in terms of having a wedding planner etc that a pub may not have?

Where is your ceremony venue? I am trying to place it but failing!

The pub is lovely, and you wouldn't need to spend as much money decorating it.

One thing to be aware about Golf Venues is that it is almost certain that you will have most of it "out of bounds" (pardon the golfing pun) I have experienced problems when trying to use some of the outdoor areas as that is deemed "for members only".

Do check precisely where you can go and assume nothing.

Been at work and just got home to all these replies so thank you!

Looks like the pub is winning! we are having a fairly rustic/vintage (but not over done vintage!) theme so i do think the pub would suit...there is space for us to have one end of the pub set up for the wedding breakfast and then there is a wooden floor at the other end (although it is all open plan unlike some pubs) that would be the dance floor, there would be space for a DJ which is what we were planning when i said cramped i kind of meant that it will just hold our numbers where as the golf club could hold up to 50 more if that makes sense?

Pandora - the ceremony venue is Tabley House near knutsford...it's stunning and with us being able to provide our own welcome drinks and canapes (or nibbles) it means we cut out this expense from the reception venue...the views are amazing so going to have some fab pics Smiley laugh its kind of one of those places you never thought your budget would stretch to but because it's hire only it does YAY!

Peter - yes this is something we are worried about! obviously members paying thousands of pounds will have a very 'if i want to go there i'l go there' attitude and in summer, height of the golfing season on a Saturday i would imagine the course will be full!! we have a small patio area that is the function rooms area but as far as pics on the greens go i'm not sure the golfers would be happy!!

i totally agree that the golf club is more of a 'blank canvas' but then i'm wondering if no matter how much we dress it up it will still look a bit box like?

i posted a few days ago about peoples views on going from a grand venue to a 'pub' like someone said i don't want to dissapoint the guests but the only way we can afford any venue that is extra special is by having a reception like that...we don't feel it will dissapoint once we have put our stamp on it and made it more 'weddingy'!

we are going to have one last look at the golf club then decide! (finally!) as we have been to the pub twice now! thanks for all the input! il let you know what we book! Smiley laugh x

I considered the 'flow' quiet alot in my venue picking - how spread out will the guests be if some are sitting outside and some dancing - - is the outside space just outside the main room or will people be up and down stairs - if people go outside can they hear if a good song comes on to come back.

I have found at some weddings, lovely venues but people are really spread out and it segregates a bit. If they are equal at the moment maybe a factor

Definitely the pub for me. The golf course really isn't my thing and I agree with whoever said it felt like a conference suite/ 90s leisure centre! The pub is warm and inviting and I am sure more of your guests will feel at home in a relaxed, cosy country pub. I certainly would.

Another vote for pub! I'm inclined to agree that the golf club will take a LOT of decorating to make it look like anything other than a conference room. You can still put your own stamp on the pub if you want to. I personally wouldn't be bothered about going from a grand house like that to that gorgeous pub.....I think you're going from a place with loads of posh old money character and grandure (sp?) to a place with barrels (forgive the pun) of quaint cosy intimate character if you go to the pub. I think going to the golf club would feel like going to characterless place and be less suited. Obviously just my opinion tho and you should go with your gut reactions!

If the theme is a bit rustic/vintage then I would definitely vote for the pub. It has a lovely feel and I'm sure your guests would feel very relaxed there. Golf club seems a bit soulless to me.
