*whispers* anyone use menstrual cups?

RebTheEck, 2 November, 2012 at 21:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

We've had the 'baby talk' and it won't be too long before I come off the pill so will soon be getting (hopefully regular) visits from dear old Aunt Flow again (boo hiss!) and it's got me thinking.

I've tried Mooncup in the past but found it rather uncomfortable (but it might have been because I was using the wrong size and flow was almost non-existent) and have seen Softcup in Boots. Softcup are disposable which might not be too environmentally correct but better than having to boil the Mooncup on the hob!

I hate towels with a passion and really not that keen on tampons.

Do any of you lovely ladies use a menstrual cup? Can you particularly recommend one?

Not used a mooncup myself, but a few years ago, Hitchers were raving about them. They got a lot of positive reviews, so from past Hitchers POV, mooncup is a good option.

I have a mooncup. But I rarely have periods these days.

    *Graphic story alert*

However, when I did try it. I swear to god I got the thing stuck. I'd already cut the little stick off the bottom, so it was just a cup with nothing to grab. Now when you insert these wonderous things, you have to squeze the edges together, insert, then the edges spring open to form the seal. In doing so they kind of form a vacuum... And this is where mine got stuck. I only wanted to try it out for a minute, I wasn't even on my period! I was pulling the bottom and because of the vaccuum it felt like I was trying to pull my cervix and uterus out also. I couldn't get my fingers up high enough to break the seal. I was starting to panic that I would have to tell H I had got the plastic egg cup stuck up my foof and we need to go to A&E.

It felt like an eternity! I looked like a potty-training toddler in a tshirt, socks and nothing else, I tried squatting, leg on the bath, sat on the loo, laying on the floor with my legs over my head etc, I finally got the sucker (literally) to release the vaccuum and out it came. Phew.

Moral of the story, keep the stick on until you know how high you can reach to break the 'seal.'

    ? Ducky how funny!

I have to say I'm surprised more of you haven't used them - I really thought I would have loads of recommendations!

Might give the Softcup a go first because they are cheaper than the Mooncup so less money to waste if it doesn't work out.

I think I'm going to give them a go once I've given birth. I hate the amount of waste generated from tampons/towels. I hadn't heard of Softcups before, sounds like they might be a good place to start as a trial.

I used a Mooncup pre-baby. Haven't had a period since though. I loved it! It takes a bit of getting the knack putting it in and removing, but I found it much more comfy than tampons and pads.

That's why I'm thinking of using them - pads are horrible and tampons in the past have been incredibly uncomfortable for me.

    ? at Ducky!

I haven't used them. I'd heard of Mooncups, but saw an ad for Softcups in a magazine on holiday last week.

It says you can continue to have sex throughout your period with a Softcup in...how? ?

    Also...MissYard2b...backflow? could you elaborate?

MY - I think the softcup is similar to a flexible but sturdy rubber ring, and the 'cup part' is made of condom-material or simialar, whereas, the mooncup is all made from a flexible rubber and keeps it's shape inside you. So I guess if you really wanted you could still have sex with the softcup in...

As MrsYard said, the backflow if if your cup holds fluid against your cervix, technicallay it can flow both ways. But I personally think gravity would sort that out most of the time, and it is completely harmless.

Also, the Mooncup doesn't hold the blood right up by your cervix, it's lower down because the mooncup sits lower than a tampon would.

If you stood on your head it might be as issue but I can't see that it would be normally as Ducky said gravity would sort it out.

I can completely understand where you are coming from Mrsyard2b, using it overnight is the only thing I'm unsure about. I suppose you could use a pad at night, although last time I had periods I had absolutely nothing at night - it seemed to vanish for some reason!
