White cars are naff. Even the police have stopped buying white patrol cars and started buying silver instead because they were struggling to sell the white ones when they reached the end of their police life! White shows the dirt really badly as well.

White is now cool again. It's that retro 80s vibe thing. Lamborghini and Audi have both made white supercars which has helped:

Here's a lambo for your husband to drool over.

    And here's the Audi:

That's what he keeps saying, but we're not looking at supercars - it's this:

I'm so not convinced - we're going to look like dodgy 80's throwbacks aren't we - made worse by the fact we live in Essex ?

I've tried the "it'll get dirty" and "it'll look awful in the winter" - but I'm not getting through.

I think white can look good on the right car. White Porsche Cayman for example looks very cool but a white Astra is a no no imo.

Think if you get white it must always be sparkly and super clean too for it to keep the 'cool' look.

I think it could look ok on the car you are thinking about getting but havent seen it in person so couldnt commit fully ?

I've noticed a lot of these cars lately. And it only looks nice in white. http://www.tuningnews.net/article/080513/novitec-fiat-500/

I like them, depends on the car though, I suppose.

Nice car! I've always liked Volvos. I think it looks good in white. The thing is, how long are you planning on keeping it? White is cool now, but it will date quickly. And yes, it will get dirty quickly.... you're absolutely right.

(and surely if he's dead set on the colour, he should wash it!)

Another point against "trendy" colours is that they are sometimes more difficult to sell when the time comes. And may not have quite as good residual values as something more classic like silver.

I've not seen it either and looks like I won't see it now until it's all done and dusted - prices are going up 5% next week so if we go for it the order has to go through by Tuesday...

I hate the thought of people looking at it as we drive around. I like a car that blends in to the background but this is going to stick out isn't it ? I spent all day yesterday car spotting and didn't see another white car on the road...I hate it when Mr. Lili gets something into his head, when it comes to cars he is like a boychild.

Someone at work got his company car (BMW) in white as he wanted loads of extras so had to compromise on the colour to keep within budget.... cue lots of "ice cream van" jokes from the rest of the office...

I didn't know white cars were naff, I don't really notice car colours, except when they're horrible shades of bright yellow or something. Actually it hadn't occurred to me that you don't get many white cars. Surely people wouldn't be looking at it that much?

Well, this will be car number 13 in 9 years (he works for Ford and so all are bought on employee discount, kept until we can hand them back and then we start again) so I'm not holding out much hope it'll be a long term purchase - although H is adamant this one will be kept longer than the usual 9 months. Financially we need to keep this one for at least 2 years but I know H too well and know that's unlikely.

Pah. I was hoping for a Fiesta, something small and everyday but there is very little discount on them at the moment and the residuals are so low that on a montly basis it's coming out almost the same as the Volvo - at least according to H that's the case, I have the feeling I've being conned though ?

Well if it's not going to be kept that long, then he might as well go for it. I think it looks good so why not? And the Summer's going to be roasting so a convertible will be lovely!

    (Not helping much am I?)

Is this just an excuse to show us what you're buying, Lily? ?

Anyway, cheap white car = naff, expensive white car = less naff.

Oh, and men driving convertibles (barring classic and supercars) is equally naff ?

I've noticed a lot more white cars recently - predominantly Audis and BMWs though. Especially those chunky ones.

If it were a supercar I'd be showing off, as it is I'm trying to think of ways to hide it from friends - it's a white Volvo, isn't that what old family men drive?!!

Besides, if I get my way we won't be buying it - I've got 2 days to convince H it's a bad idea - up until now he has had an answer for everything I've come up with but your men driving convertibles being naff has got him thinking ? I swear this is the start of some early mid life crisis...

I've already said if he wins I won't be letting him have the roof down when I'm in the car - I don't spend what I do on my hair for the windswept look ?

You can tell him that if anything, the Volvo is doubly naff because it's for middle aged men who don't have the balls to buy a proper convertible ?

I thought Volvo's were now trendy (Edward's car in Twilight?) and were now driven by pimps and drug dealers

Totally naff and my iPod is black...

I don't even want to own a silver car again let alone a white one. And yes the car manufacturers are trying to say white is retro but I just don't buy it. My Golf GTi looks far better in "look at me" red than white!

I've noticed it coming back in fashion for cars. I think the BMW M3 looks nice in white, although it's my dream car anyway. I have a white van though, which is never going to be cool ?

I was going to say the only car that can get away with being white is the Fiat 500. I love them! Snowball what a fab little car you have there.

    That Fiat looks brilliant.

White on the right car can be fabulous- really modern. On the wrong car, naff. I agree with whoever mentioned ipods- I think that sort of glossy white is very big in lots of areas at the moment, from cars to kitchens. You do have to keep it spotless though, which might be impractical.

My dad used to own a a White Volvo when I was in my late teens and I remember being highly embarassed by it. When he used to drop me off to see friends I used to request we use my Mums car or hopefuly would leave when it was dark. When he retired this year he used his lump sum to buy a a brand new silver Audi A5 Convertible - although he does wear a very dodgy baseball hat when driving with the roof down.
