white flowers?

cinnamon009, 21 August, 2014 at 13:51 Posted on Planning 0 8

I had my first meeting with the wedding florist a few weeks ago and I am now back at the drawing board to think about what flowers I want.

I want all the flowers to be white with some greenery. I want a round bouquet for my bouquet. The colour scheme is black, white and silver so I can't see any other colour matching in. I had set my heart on white roses - I LOVE roses. When I showed the florist a photo of my dress - which is sottero diamond white with a pewter overlay, she explained that white roses, even the whitest rose, tend to be a bit creamy in colour. This looks great with ivory or soft white dresses but if you ever put ivory next to bright white - it can look 'dirty'. She showed me and it does. In the photos they can look whiter, but next to my dress they will probably look odd. She also said that roses in December can be a bit on the small side so I need to be aware of that if I'm looking at summer bouquets it might not look the same. She can do it no problem but then suggested some alternatives.

Now I have to admit I'm not a flower person. I love roses, lilies are ok. I know tulips and chrysanthemums. That's about it. So my lovely florist took me into the flower room and showed me all the different variations and her suggestions. She thought lilies would make a lovely white bouquet, as would tulips and then other flowers which I have no idea about. It was very difficult to make my mind up there and then about which ones I did like and which I didn't So we decided to have another meet a few weeks before the wedding so I can see what flowers are available and what the colours are looking like. Apparently they are all subject to weather and availability given they grow outside. Who knew!! Smiley smile

Anyway, my homework prior to this is to get a better feel for what alternatives to roses I might like that will be available in December. So I have looked through pinterest but it doesn't say what flowers they are or availability. Any brides or flower minded people have alternative true white flower suggestions to start my research?

I'm a florist and your florist is 100% correct in everything she says. The nearest to diamond white in the same shape as roses would probably be carnations which will give you the same effect in a hand-tied as roses in that it can be made compact but it would have a 'ruffled' look due to the texture of the bloom. Tulips are whiter than roses and would make a stunning hand-tied. Because Mother Nature is unpredictable, it's pretty much impossible to get whiter than white flowers because the calyx which the blooms grow from is green and a lot of 'white' flowers have green tinges to them.

You can get artificial white roses which are absolute stark white and very realistic but it's not often I am asked to use them because of the fact that they are so stark, they can be quite harsh looking next to skin (bare arms for example) and delicate materials.

You could try this website for availability by season and colour of the different flowers http://www.flowers.org.uk Hope that helps.

I went to a wedding with a black and silver colour scene and the bride had white gerberas with black in the middle. The flowers were beautiful. Don't think her dress was diamond white though so maybe one of the florists on here could advise.

Flowers were one of my favourite parts to choose because I picture my husband buying me the same flowers on anniversaries, and us having vases of them at our house warming, etc. We didn't have a first dance, so don't really have 'our song', but we can have 'our flowers' Smiley smile

I too went for white flowers, but I had an ivory dress and my wedding was earlier this month.

I really wanted a messy white anemone and gypsophila bouquet but I was told that anemones are a winter flower so they'd either be really expensive to ship, or wouldn't be that good quality if grown here. I ended up going for gyp and lisianthus. As your wedding is in December, perhaps consider white anemones as the centre is a really deep colour which would tie in with your black and white colour scheme. I'm not sure how they'd look against your dress though, but something to think about.

    Good luck! Smiley smile

Just had a quick google (I don't know a single thing about flowers so listen to the pro's!) and with you saying you are having white and silver, and you have the pewter overlay on your dress, what about these greyish ball-y things!?!? Ha ha, I think they're really pretty with the white, and very wintery ...

Thanks everyone. Overtherainbow - thankyou for your comments. Its reassuring to have a professional second opinion! I'm glad she was honest with me and explained it all as I have seen some posts where Brides have not been able to have the flowers that they wanted on the day but were unaware beforehand that there might be an issue.

I will look on that link and also google gerberas and anemones and start pulling together a list of ones I like.

Sillywrong - I really like the second bouquet - does anyone know what flowers they are? I have a feeling they might be peonies which aren't generally available in Winter even though that looks like a winter bouquet?

They are peonies and sadly not readily available in winter Smiley sad Gerberas are though and anenomes! Ranunculus is available in white but sometimes it has creamy/yellowy centres though.

I'm loving the technical terms going on here - "these thingies" "greyish ball-y things"!!!

I'm making notes so that I can wow my florist with my improved industry knowledge when I go and see her next ?
