White gold, or palladium

Snyffa, 8 July, 2013 at 16:54 Posted on Planning 0 8

Gosh ive been trawling the internet and its so hard to get a diffinitive answer on this.

Should i ge tmy ring made from palladium or 9ct white gold?

I realise white gold needs replating whereas palladium wont BUT from what i have read, and it appears to only be certain places it is written, palladium actually scratched quite easily despite being a harder metal, you see, you don't get palladium re-coated but it scratches, at least if the gold did scratch it would be replated at some point and look good as new?

What are your experiences? Has anyone bought palladium and regreted it? Have you gotten palladium and found it to be markless years on....

Please help

What about tungsten carbide? Cheap as chips and about as unscratchable as you're going to find on a wedding ring. I have one and it leaves marks on brick walls.

It's probably a slightly greyer colour than white gold/palladium/platinum, so might not work if you're going to wear it next to an engagement ring made from one of these.

I have a platinum engagement ring so was advised not to go for a white gold wedding band because the platinum would take the white gold plating off too quickly.

I have a platinum wedding band but OH has a palladium ring. It does seem to have scratched quite quickly (only been married 2 months!) which I am a bit disappointed with, but apparently a clean/polish at the jewellers will sort this out.

Rhodium plating can be around £17 a pop (might be dearer now though!) so I'd personally go for Palladium. My sister had a white gold ER and says if she had known about it she would have gone for platinum. She chose a platinum WR so she didn't have to get that re-coated too. Although you can see the scratches, unlike white gold, when you 'scratch' a platinum or palladium rung it simply 'moves' the metal around, so it can be repolished and you don't actually lose any metal. If you scratch a silver or gold ring, you lose the metal that's gauged out.

My engagement ring is Palladium 950 and my wedding ring will be the same. I would definitely recommend it- nice and strong, but cheaper than platinum! I haven't noticed any scratched on mine, it still looks perfect Smiley smile

Just realised I replied in the wrong place! Here it is again anyway..
