White/RED wine drinkers - help!

Sofianna, 26 October, 2008 at 19:02 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

I'm having a big get together on Saturday and not sure what wine to buy as I'm not a big wine drinker. I know I don't like Chardonnay, so I'd rather not order any. Can you recommend a nice white wine that would go down well? Sauvignon Blanc? Pinot Grigio? Anything else? Any brands that are better than others? Help!

It depends on if you have wine buffs/snobs going, if not then black tower pinot grigio is very easy drinking. I very rarely drink at home, but I drank half a bottle of this the other night. I would have had the other half, but I was at work the following day

No wine snobs as far as I know (well, just one but she'll drink rose which I've ordered specially), budget-wise no more than £6 per bottle. I don't want to go totally OTT but don't want to serve cheap plonk either. We're having a buffet, so people will start drinking before any food is available, and there will be red and rose too.

I would say that sauvignon blanc is your safest bet for that budget. It tends to be easy drinking, not too sharp or sweet, so no one dislikes it too much IYSWIM.

Any specific brand? Or does it not matter at this price bracket?

My personal favourite for Sauvignon Blanc is anything from NZ - though you'll struggle to find anything under £6 unless you find special offers. Chenin Blanc from SA may be an option.

I normally go fairly middle of the road by which I mean not too dry so a 2 or 3, fruity and not oaked e.g. NZ Sauvignon Blanc, SA Chenin Blanc, Aust Columbard Chardonnay. I personally don't like Pinot Grigio as I have often found it rather tasteless. Rose wise, White Zinfandel is a firm favourite.

I'm also a big fan of NZ (Marlborough) Sauvignon Blancs. I'm particularly partial to Oyster Bay Sav Blanc which is often around £6 a bottle on offer (I think it's normally £8 or £9), so it might be worth checking a few supermarkets if you have time. I don't mind Pinot Grigio either but like you I don't really like Chardonnay.

I've not even heard of Marlborough, or Oyster Bay, which I guess proves that I really know nothing about wine...

Thanks for the recommendations, and if anyone else has any suggestions, please do keep them coming! ?

@ Kierenthecommunity: Thanks, will check it out.

OK - now that I've got the white wine sorted, I'm thinking I ought to get a nice red or two. Any suggestions? I know even less about red wine than I know about white, just looking for an easy drinking one that's not too expensive but is not plonk either.

For red, cotes de ventoux is very light and usually very good value.
