Who came dress shopping with you?

ShropshireLass, 14 September, 2013 at 11:58 Posted on Planning 0 21

I've had three appointments so far.

The first one my mum, youngest sister and daughter (6) came with me. The second was just my youngest sister (mum wasn't well) and my third yesterday was both my sisters (mum was on holiday!)

Typically, I found "the" dress at an appointment where my mum wasn't with me so I'm taking her when she's back to have a look & hopefully order!

This got me thinking though, a lot of people, both on here and who I know, took their FMIL/FSIL shopping with them too... It didn't once occur to me to invite them along. I feel kinda bad about it but at the same time, we're not overly close & I don't want too many people seeing the dress before the day anyway. Have I been a bit mean in not letting them come to any?

I went alone first, then when I had 3 I liked I took mum and sis, and then hubby.

I had only met MIL twice by that point, and never met SIL so didn't nivite them. I did, however, invite MIL to a fitting later so she didn't feel excluded though she couldn't make it.

I went with mum and a friend as my bridesmaids could not make it. My FMIL lives in Bridlington which is a good 170 miles from me so that was probably understandable. However, OH is her only child so she prob won't ever get a chance to do the dress thing so I have arranged to go and try the sample on for her when she is next down as I want her to feel part of it. It gets me brownie points as well for including his mum!

She made a comment on FB when I said I had found it which was a subtle way of saying 'I understand if you don't want to show me and it is ok' so thought I would as she was so understanding about it!

    Edited to add:

I don;t think you are being mean. You can decide after if you want to show them.

I bought it on my own (Monsoon) but one bridesmaid and my mum came to my alteration fitting. My FMIL did see me ngtry it on at home (trying to include her) and then followed up with several scathing remarks about it to my mum, so that's the end of inclusivity for her, ha!

I took my mum the first time. My best friend and chief BM came back with me when I went to order 'the one'. I'll invite future MIL and SIL when I go back for fittings etc.

    Thanks for replies Smiley smile

I think I'll wait til fittings come around before deciding whether to let them have a peek...and if fmil doesn't mightily pee me off before then as she has a habit of doing!

I went just with my mum. I've shown my BMs (one is also FSIL) and my FMIL a photo of the dress but not me in it. Ill probably take them to a fitting nearer the time.

The first three appointments i had back in July (all on one day) were just me and my Mum. We went last weekend with my Granny too and found the dress. It did occur to me that maybe I should have asked my bridesmaids, but my Mum has just moved to Norfolk so we went shopping up there and none of them live anywhere near there.

I am planning to take my Mum and Nan with me. Once I have narrowed the search down then I might invite two of my bridesmaids who are my best friends to see what they think! I can't invite my FMIL as she has sadly passed away x

I went with my mum and grandma once, then went again to another store with my dad!

went back with my mum... Still couldn't decide so didn't order! Went bck again with my mum and Cousin who is one of my bridesmaids! Found out I couldn't order the dress!

a week later went to a store on my own with on dress in mind tried it on and ordered on the spot as it was about to be discontinued!

Took my mum to see it that weekend... Thankfully she loved it too!

It hasn't occurred to me to invite FMIL or FSIL even though she is a bridesmaid! I actually don't think yet are very interested neither have asked if I have a dress yet! I won't mention it, so we'll see what happens! I'd rather they didn't see it because they probably won't like it!

I took my Sister in law with me. I am close with her and don't have family near me. My Mum came to my final fitting.

Noone. I did warn my mum and BM in advance and they had expected it anyway knowing how much I hate shopping. On the day the dress arrived my mum came round to help me into it and get a look.

I just went shopping with my mum. I knew she would be totally honest with me, also i thought too many opinions may confuse me. Once I had decided on the dress I took my bridesmaids and my aunt along.

Personally I wouldn't be inviting my FMIL to any fitting - we aren't close.

I only took my mum. I'd have loved to take h2bs mum but sadly she passed away last year. She will be in our thoughts on the day itself though x

I took my mum on one shopping trip and two of my BMs on another. None of them live nearby though, so I then went to another couple of shops by myself, which is where I found the one. I sent them all photos of me in it when it finally arrived, but no-one actually saw me in it till the day.

I didn't really think to invite FMIL, though we get on just fine, but she didn't appear that interested and also lives quite far away so trying to include her would have added another layer of complexity to the logistics! I showed her some photos too though.

Just me & my Mum for me. I felt quite bad that BM wasn't with me but i'm kind of glad now as I don't think she'd have been as honest as my mum would and say anything looked good on me and I wouldn't know which she genuinely liked haha Smiley smile

First went with mum and sister. Then just mum. Then MIL, mum and sister and found the one. Wouldn't have wanted to take a dress home without all three of them being there.

My lovely and very patient sister came along to each shop with me. I had planned on taking my mum too but she was in and out of hospital a lot at the beginning of the year so wasn't really up to it at the time. I did take photos whenever I could though to show her and my dad. I get on fine with my FMIL and FSIL but didn't think to invite them - we're only having a small wedding and so I want to make sure that as few people as possible have seen it in advance!

I took maid of honour to most of them, then went to a couple with bm's, and then my mum went to a couple as well! Would've loved to take fsil and FMIL, but the live in Aus so wasn't possible!

I found my dress when I was visiting my best friend in Reading and we decided to pop into a bridal shop to look at BM dresses, then sponteneously decided to try some on, not thinking anything would happen. We found my dress almost straightaway, i was in shock but also was worried about telling my sis as she should have been there, I told my sis it wasn't intentional and she was fine about it so I'm sure your MIL and SIL will be. I am inviting my sis, MIL and SIL to the first dress fitting.

I had my dress made so didn't have the dress shopping experience. I just drew my design and took it to the dressmaker.
