Who can print our own design of our invitations?

MNooty, 19 February, 2011 at 15:11 Posted on Planning 0 8

We have quite a quirky idea for our invitations and H2B has sketched out the outline of the idea we have. What we don't know is how to make the vision reality? The design means it will be highly unlikely to be able to print it at home and anyhow we would rather find someone who can do it for us. (We're not really very crafty). Has anyone done similar? I.e. come up with an idea and had to find someone to do it for them?

Is this going to be hideously expensive? I spoke to someone at the designer wedding show (before we came up with our design) that would charge £250 for the "design consultation" alone, and I can't quite bring myself to accept that sort of charge even before we are paying for the individual items.

Depending on the type of design it was, you could make it up on your computer and then upload it onto Vistaprint? Sorry I can't help you more with this!

Hi, I have posted a query today asking if anyone had any feedback on a company called Poppy Jo. I know that they can adapt your own designs, which is what they are in the process of doing for me. I can't actually recommend them as such as have not used them yet (although have received samples which look good!) I was just wondering if anyone had actually ordered through them before i commit to our order!

It's difficult to price something like this without seeing the idea as it depends on many factors:

If it's a straightforward print job that fits a standard card size and you are able to digitally artwork it yourselves, your cheapest option would be to upload your design to an online digital print company. These will vary in quality and price eg Vistaprint are one of the cheapest but are limited. There are other many other good online printers though. Or you could take it to a local high street printers who may be able to offer a greater choice of cardstocks and explain exactly what they would need from you with regards to artwork - most will artwork for you too (but will charge). Many print companies charge an initial set up fee as well as print costs.

If however it's just a rough concept and rough sketch that you have and require someone to actually design it, artwork it and print (or outsource to a printworks) then I would expect a professional stationery designer to charge some kind of design fee in addition to print. This will be to cover their time and expertise involved (which is not unreasonable) but will vary. You may find that the design you have in your mind may call for a specialised print or finish that the designer will have to source a specific finisher for eg professional foil blocking or die cutting. Bear in mind that some printworks and finishers will have a minimum print run too. Again a professional stationery should be able to advise.

I'd be happy to have a look for you as I might be able to either recommend specific stationery designers who are suited to the style of work you have in mind (eg is it a cartoon, typographic, illustrative, handmade/collage, lasercut etc?) or suggest printers to contact if you just require print.

    Hi,

My H2B and I have had our invitations designed by a friend as we wanted something less traditional and more modern.

I found the lovely HIB Hannah from HGM Invited on another thread and I can say that she is AMAZING!

Our invite proof (recieved this week!) has been produced the the highest quality and she's so lovely! She's now doing my OOS, Tables Names and Postbox!

Highly recommended, so look her up on here if you're interested!

Hi I can recommend Natalie from Inspire me designs (she has already posted) but we had a strong idea what we wanted for our invites and Natalie helped us pull it out of our brains and bring it to life.

If you can design the whole invite yourself you can take it to a local printers who will just charge you their printing costs (if you take the card). They can also provide the card too.

I ended up having to have mine printed at my local printers as the card I bought was too thick for my printer (doh!) and they charged me 25p per sheet to print my invites on my card. Plus the quality of the print was much better than my printer could do!
