Who has been to Turkey? Opinions please!

FutureMrsWilson, 24 May, 2011 at 07:02 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 4

Me and OH are working on a tight budget, and found that Turkey and Greece are the cheapest places we have found which we'd want to go. OH has been to neither, and I have been to Greece. However, people have told me that because of the Euro, Greece is becoming more and more expensive to eat and as Turkey is (currently) still using the Lira, you get more for your buck. This isn't a bad thing, but as I've never been to Turkey I do have some concerns. I adore Greece, it's just a shame that we'll have to find more money if we want to avoid eating soup in our apartment everyday!

WWYD in our situation? Go with what you know, or venture into the unknown and try Turkey?

It's a nice place. It seems to be different from the US but it's a really nice place. And good people too.

I've been to Turkey a few times and in many ways it is IMO really quite similar to Greece. Very beautiful scenery, but as with Greece you need to make sure yuo avoid the ultra touristy bits - Bodrum, Gumbet for example now are really quite full of 18-30s bars and cafes offering full English breakfasts - probably not what you are after! I think you would enjoy Turkey, particularly if it means you can eat out more (the food is great) x

I've been to Turkey 4 times now. Only just come back last Tuesday funny enough. I've been to Altinkum ( but that was a long time ago so think it's very much changed), Olu Deniz in 2008 which we really enjoyed, Lara Beach last year - wouldn't go again for the price you pay and Yalikavak the first 2 weeks of May this year. We love Turkey but in my honest opinion I wouldn't chose it for my honeymoon but that is purely because we can budget for a more exotic place. However understand if you're on a tight budget and it's what you can afford then go for it.

You can get some really lovely places and perhaps upgrade your room to make it a bit special. We had a spa in our last hotel and it was fantastic - but pricey! We visited Bodrum a few times but not in the evening so can't tell you what it's like. There are plenty of excursions and historical sites you can visit if you enjoy that sort of thing and depending on when you're going it can be lovely and quiet. We had the hotel to ourselves nearly this year because it was so quiet. And the temp was lovely but I beleive it can be hideous in the height of summer with temps reaching 45c!!!!

Feel free to ask any other questions you wish

I love greece, been so many times now (and got married out there!)

We went to Turkey last year, went to Turgutreis, which is near bodrum but still about a 30 min trip on the bus. Was lovelty, but I do prefer my greek hols.

If its for honeymoon, I'd say greece - Skiathos is nice and small, which is lovely, and we got married in Santorini which was fantastic ?
