Who has button holes?

Nephelae, 7 October, 2009 at 17:35 Posted on Planning 0 10

I thought I would make some lovely grey ribbon roses for the registry office on Friday (part 1 of the wedding!) The people attending are;

Me, Mr Neph, Best Man, My mum and Dad, Mr Neph's two brothers + two sisters, my friend and her husband and Mr Neph's mum and dad. Do I need to make 7 for all the men?! I wanted to have one as it will match my blue/grey outfit and I can fix it to a safety pin and use it as a brooch, maybe just me, Mr Neph, best man and my dad?! In which case, I'm on the last one ? Neph x

    I was wondering that but I don't know what Mr Neph's dad will be wearing, his mum will be wearing a sari so wearing ribbon rose as a brooch would maybe look ok but not sure, they may just think I'm weird!! Maybe I'll take one round when I see them later and ask if they would like them?! I'll probably have time to make two more tomorrow if I need to ? N x

    I dont think it really matters who has button holes as at my brother in laws wedding, one of his uncles brought a box of about 50 button holes and was just handing them out to everyone.

    It was like a florist had got bored and thrown flowers at everyone, either that or a hippy convention

    Traditionally, they are given to the Groom, Best Man, Father of the Bride, Father of the Groom and any ushers in attendance and the Mums have corsages which have a few more flowers than the buttonholes. There are no hard and fast rules though and it's basically down to what you personally prefer and budget. I always advise against having buttonholes for all the guests as many people don't like wearing them and so many are wasted at weddings left lying around in the box. However, if it is small, informal wedding, missing certain people out can look a bit conspicuous (sp?) IFSWIM! Hope that helps

    I'm having them for anyone who wants one, but only because I am getting flowers straight from the market and my aunts are arranging them, ao they will hardly cost me anything. If I was paying a florist to do them, i would only have groom, both sets of parents, BM and ushers. I think the mums are supposed to have corsages but my mom just wants a rose buttonhole. A lot of people don't like them as at the end of the day who wants to put a hole in their nice new frock? I didnt wear mine at the last wedding I went to, I just carried it ?

    Mum had hers stuck to her handbag - infact a few of the ladies had corsages stuck to their hand bag, I used to do that too when I was at family weddings in the late 80s lolol..

    We have gone for all the male attendants having buttonholes, and all the female attendants having corsages. They were about £3.50 each I think. Dont really know what the difference between the teo is though!

    Buttonholes normally consist of a single flower plus leaves maybe some bear grass. Groom's buttonhole is usually something a little bit more elaborate to match Brides bouquet.

    Corsages are like a miniature bouquet and normally made to match the ladies outfit rather than the wedding colours. They can be worn on a lapel of a jacket, on the wrist, on a handbag (normally a clutch type bag as these display them at their best) or on a hat. They can also be worn on the waistline or over the shoulder but not many people do this these days! Handbag corsages are quite intricate and take a while to make hence the £18 charge! A lot of people tie a normal corsage to the strap of a bag but a proper handbag corsage is wired over the flap of a bag so there is no damage. Hope that helps!
