What happened? Do you have a drink? Are you by yourself?

I just went to pick up H and his friend from the pub and I hadn't realised how bad the weather was. I took his big car, a big 4x4 Jeep, and I lost control of it on the high street! The high street is a very steep hill and even though it'd been gritted, and I was doig no more than 15, it just slid out of control, and towards a shop doorway where there was a young lad on his mobile - he realised what was going to happen at the last minute and jumped clear. I thought I'd hit him. I really did. There was a thump as I went up the kerb and I was convinced I'd gone right over him.?

The car spun 270degrees and I got out but he had jumped to the other side of the road, and was being sick with shock I think. His friends were all shouting that he was fine. Then I was sick. I managed to get the car back on the road and go and get H and we're at home now. I'm all jittery and shakey. H and his mate were very sympathetic but they're all widdley so I've left them to it.

I'm stone cold sober and 8 months pregnant, and my nerves are shredded. I don't know how I missed him.

Holy crap. Someone was looking out for him and you. The main thing is you are all ok.

Take care of yourself and maybe if you still feel shakey in a couple of days go and see your GP. It may hit you and it could be useful to talk to someone about it.

I think a medicinal brandy or small glass of wine would be acceptable ?

Blimey, that must have been a shock for you.

Have a cup of hot sweet tea.

I always think there is someone "up there" looking out for me when I have had accidents (not driving. but other ones). The only thing I can suggest is to look at it that no-one was hurt, and it was no way your fault, just treachorous driving conditions and the car slid.

I'm worried about my H driving to work in the morning - we currently have 12cm of snow here (I'm a saddo who has just gone outside and measured it with my son's ruler!!) and there are no signs of it letting up.

Thankyou, both of you. Bobbly, you must be quite near me, in East Herts. The weather is terrible. GW, I might mention it to my GP when I see him this week. My neck feels slightly sore where I was gripping the wheel so hard. I witnessed a fatal road accident a couple of years ago and this sort of thing brings it all back. As the car was sliding, I thought there was no way I wouldn't kill him, and all that horrible stuff came back.

I must have had God on the bonnet tonight. Thank goodness it was a young fit lad who could jump out of the way.

    I'm near Chessington in Surrey.

I've not known it this bad here for at least 20 years.

It sounds like you tensed up all your muscles. might be an idea to have a warm bath to see if it relaxes them.

I was made redundant on Friday, so the good news here is that I don't have to go to work in the morning and battle through the snow! - In fact, I'm not sure if we are going to be able to get my son to school either - he will be happy!

Oh my - thank goodness you are all safe. Second the sweet tea and gp. your no doubt still in shock, so do try and distract yourself as much as you can. I was out earlier with H, the roads have not been gritted here yet and it was very slippery. Take care

Just looked outside - they predicted up to 6 inches of snow, and we are at 5 already and it is now snowing harder than ever!

The cats don't know what to do - they normally have a little night time wander outside, but one of them put two paws in the snow, sank up to his belly, and rushed indoors with a most indignant look!

Gosh that's miles from here! I'm very sorry to hear you were made redundant, how horrible! (My job is 'at risk' and we're in consultation etc but I'm hoping I'll be ok.) Hope you and your boy have fun tomorrow!

It's absolutely treacherous. I've just wimpered to H that we need some snow chains. H's friend is staying here cos he's meant to be going skiing tomorrow and we're fairly near the airport, but it's looking like the only skiing he'll be doing is down the road!

Thanks - It wasn't a huge surprise, so I was expecting it really.

I was meant to be going to sign on at an agency tomorrow, but at the moment you can't tell the road from the pavement, and I'm not going to risk driving in that. As I said, I am worried about H driving. Iknow he'll do the "it's only a bit of snow" thing, and want to go in, but I'm hoping he sees sense,

I've had a similar talk to my H, who has accepted that he might not make it to the office tomorrow but is still talking about taking his mate to the airport. Unless there's a heatwave overnight, that won't be happening.....

I've just measured again, and we officially have 6 inches of snow on the patio and it is still snowing.

Like you said, unless there is a thaw in the next 5 hours, I will announce us as officially snowed in!

Dunno! When I told him what had happened, his first reaction was that I'd have been alright in such a tank of a car, whereas I was thinking anyone I hit wouldn't stand a chance. Difference in perspective, I suppose. Well, I've had some medicinal cake and chocolate, and feel a bit better so I think I'd better try and sleep. Thanks tons and tons for listening, all of you. I think I'd have climbed the walls if I hadn't got this out. x x

Not a problem - hope you have a good sleep and I hope it all seems less frightening in the morning.

    Take care.

That sounds awful. I hope you've had a good nights sleep. FWIW I think it probably seemed a lot worse than it was becuase of the noise of hitting the kerb.

H and I had our own near miss last night on the motorway when some woman decided to go from the slow lane to the middle lane buit then just carried on drifting. I swear you couldn't have fitted a piece of paper between our cars. H just had to press his horn and hope she noticed (she had such a blank look on her face the whole time).

    Sounds really scary.

I was thinking about going into school if the snow cleared later but this has completely put me off.

I hope you managed to get a good nights sleep last night, that must have been so scary for you. I skidded the car (twice) late last night on the A14 (major local road) and I nearly pooped myself. It was awful driving as I could not make out the lines on the road (or even where the road ended and the verge began). I was glad to get home.

Hope you're feeling ok this morning ? The bloke is probably regaling all his mates with tales of his heroic leap this morning and will think no more of it ?

I had a similar experience once where I was sliding sideways down a hill towards a busy junction and was contemplating jumping out ? thankfully I slid into a gap between two parked cars and the kerb stopped me a few metres from the bottom.

Hope you are OK. Not sure where you are in Herts but I slid several times in a 5 min journey home from work last night. I'm in N Herts.

Eeek, sounds very scary, hope you slept well last night! ?

We have virtually no snow here, thankfully, it's more like a light dusting. I hate the snow!

Thanks so much for all your kind messages. ? I feel a lot better, but it was still the first thing I thought of when i woke up. I still can hardly believe I didn't hit him. I'm a really experienced driver, it's a big car with ABS, traction control etc and all-weather tyres, I was crawling along and it still happened. Just goes to show....☹️
