Who is getting a passport in their married name for honeymoon?

knitting_vixen, 7 December, 2010 at 17:27 Posted on Planning 0 17

I have told h2b that I am not sure was to whether or not I want to take his name, I was planning on getting the passport done in secret and surprising him at the airport.

Anyone any thoughts on this?

My SIL is getting married in May and is using her maiden name (she says that if you have matching passports, people don't realise you are on honeymoon so you don't get free upgrades).

I am worried getting the passport in advance may cause problems.

Any thoughts? Has anyone done this?

Dont forget you need to book your travel in your name on your passport

also when you get your new name on your passport- you only get what is left on your passport- it doesnt renew to 10 years

No, I am not changing mine. Two reasons - I go abroad for three weeks and get back a week before the wedding so there isn't time to make the change and I also refuse to pay £80 ish to change my name when I have 5 more years on my passport!

Oh yeah, I know that! I am not sure which name to book honeymoon in as undecided¬

The Passport agency say that the passport would be a new one post-dated, full priced and lasts 10 years!

I'm not getting a new one, just incase anything happens and I need to fly in the few weeks leading up to the wedding. Also secretly hoping we might be able to pop in a short break to Paris or Barcelona a few weeks before the wedding.

Mine is valid until 2014 so I wont be chaning mine for a while. In terms of people knowing we are married I don't think it matters, so many people pass through their doors every week and unless your passport has a big mark on it saying "Just married" it still doesn't indicate your on your Honeymoon?

I spent a while agonising over this and then in the end booked the honeymoon in my married name. It doesn't seem too complicated to change my passport and I have no plans to go anywhere abroad right before the wedding. My current one only has a couple of years left on it so I figured I may as well just do it now!

I'm still a bit ? about changing my name but I know deep down that I do want to, I just can't let go of my current name so easily!

I'm changing mine - my passport runs out in Jan anyway (get married in June) so just letting it run out then getting a new one for the honeymoon. Not going anywhere until the wedding so it doesnt really matter!

Plus you have to show your marriage certificate to get any freebies whilst on honeymoon anyway! Dont think your passport makes any difference nowadays as so many people keep their own names now.

We booked with Co-op travel and were told to get the "honeymoon treatment" from the hotel it has nothing to do with the passport and everything to do what the travel agent writes on your booking information.

We have had our travel agent put down that we are on honeymoon, and have been told to take our marriage certificate as the changed passport doesn't show the date you got married and therefore won't entitle you to any special treatment from the hotel.

Some places offer the honeymoon package for up to 12 months after your wedding date as they understand some people can't afford to go straight away.. We are going on a second honeymoon in April 2012 and so may well be taking advantage of that twice.

My passport doesn't expire until 2014 so I will only be updating it then. Will just have to remember to book things in my maiden name after we've been on honeymoon ?

We're going on honeymoon to California in July. I'm more worried about all the searches you have to go through to get into the US at the moment. Have you seen this? http://www.jaunted.com/story/2010/1/6/165831/7563/travel/Full-Body+Scanners+101:+How+Naked+Is+Full-Body+Scan+Naked%3F

I don't want pervy security guards seeing me naked! Gross!

I be changing mine when I come back from my hen doo, into my married name (im changing mine) Luckly mine expires within months after anyway,

but reading the terms and conditions they state they will renew your passport and add on any time left from your old passport. Not sure if that means 10 years plus say five from your old one, but just thought I mention it xxxx

Thanks Broomfield but I looked into it quite carefully and I am almost certain that you can only add on up to 9 unused months onto your passport, any more time just gets lost. Which I think is shocking when I only want to change my surname! However I may be wrong so I appologise now if I have misunderstood it.

They will only add on 9 months, which sucks! How many people happen to get married to coincide with their passports needing renewal.. hmm..

Broomfield, totally seperate issue but where are you off on your hen? I am just thinking if you've only got a few months left be careful as some places won't let you fly unless you have 6 months worth of "time" on your passport.

I am getting mine done for the honeymoon as my OH is keen I do - which i think is dead sweet!

You can get it done before, just leave enough time and be aware you cant travel on it then until after the wedding - so bear that in mind for an hen do abroad! xx
