Who isn't getting their cake professionally made?

FutureMrsWilson, 2 May, 2011 at 06:46 Posted on Planning 0 27

My maid of honor is a dab hand in the kitchen, so I've been thinking about having a baking day with her to see how a cake/cupcakes would turn out.

Anyone else thinking of taking the plunge and not having a professional cake?
Any OM's who didn't have one made, how was it received?

Mine is being made by a friend who's just set up a cupcake business. Not sure if that counts as professional or not!

My b2b's mum is making ours, and a friend (who is retired but has cake making qualifications) is decorating them for us, so I guess you can add us to the list.

I'm making ours and although I don't run a business or have any qualifications in cake decorating it is my hobby. We're having a 5 tier fruit cake and then a whole cupcake table with a variety of different cakes on different stands but also decorated with real flowers.

Im making my own 3 tier cake, Just normal sponge with a yummy butter cream filling, yum!

I have done a few trial runs and its not that hard to do!

The only thing to go wrong was the icing butterflies, so i am now having feather ones instead, which will make it look even better i think.

Here is my cake without anything on the top.

We're getting mt H2B's auntie to make ours. She is not a professional cake maker but is very good at them. If she wasn't doing it, I doubt we would be having a cake- I'm not that bothered about them.

My husband and his mum made our cake. It looked fantastic and you couldn't tell that it wasn't made by professionals. we hade a vanilla sponge, chocolate sponge and a fruit cake tier, although it would have been easier for them if it was all fruit layers, becasue the sponges had to be made very close to the day where as the fruit layers could be made earler and fed with alcohol along the way, so their was more time to ice them and less stress. tried to add a pic, but it's not letting me!

A family member is making mine for me. She is fab so it will look professional.

I think the prices of professional cakes are ridiculous so I would not think anything about anyone opting to not have one tbh. I almost didn't have a cake I thought they were that ridiculous!

My auntie is making ours, just simple 3 tier stacked cake with some ribbons and a couple of sparkly snowflake brooches. I think for cakes, the simple ones are the most striking sometimes. Her cakes are delicious too so I'm not worried

A good friend is making mine - she's really a teacher, but makes the odd cake on the side! She's already made two wedding cakes for friends and is doing another two (including ours) over the summer, so she is obviously very good and her cakes look very professional! x

My mum is great at doing cakes so she did ours. We had a small cake for during the day at the meal, then a 3 tiered cake for the evening.

I am making mine- I am literally just about to start making the chocolate orange mud cake tier and was up at 6am making sugar paste roses to go on top! I am really pleased with it so far but it is a lot of extra stress for an already stressful time but I couldn't get anyone else to do it when I knew I could do it myself!! And if you or someone does it for you, it really adds the personal touch to your day!

I'm making my own - as I know I can make Christmas cake and it disappears as if locusts got in, and I'm using the same recipe. Decorations are going to be pretty simple or from the florist... but I'm happy icing and putting a ribbon round it!

Any advice on where best to source a cake stand would be much appreaciated.

My Mum is making our cupcakes, she has made lots of cakes before and they are great Smiley smile ! So I really cant see the point in paying £000 for a cake to be made when someone so close to us could do it.
