Who shops with Asos

Red Kite, 4 August, 2014 at 16:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Whilst I have liked quite a few things on Asos in the past, today was the first time i have ordered from there. I set the account up with my home billing address and my work as a delivery address and placed my order (it allowed you to enter different addresses).

I then received an email asking me to send a scan of my passport/driving licence and a bank statement or credit card bill to verify who I was. My passport FFS? This seems really intrusive and a lot of information for a clothing website? I can't find many other accounts online of people having to do that same thing and I am massively hesitant about sending them this kind of data. I do loads of online shopping and have never once been asked to provide this kind of information.

I have emailed them (refusing to provide the data) and asking if they would prefer I get delivery to my home address - as I am assuming it's the issue of the separate billing and delivery address that has upset the system.

Has anyone else had this when they have placed their first order with Asos? I know I can just shop somewhere else - but the dress I quite liked was one of their own brands.

I've ordered stuff in the past and I've never been asked to scan my passport to them?!

I've bought loads and don't ever remember being asked that. I usually get stuff sent to work, but maybe when I first set the account up I didn't do that. It would have been a major problem if I had been, as I don't have a passport or driving licence!

I use separate addresses all the time. ASOS encourage this to get a first time delivery e.g. deliver to work instead of home etc. They've never asked for a passport scan. Sounds a bit dubious to me!?

Have shopped with them for years and never had to provide any of that info. I've had items shipped to loads of addresses including my uncle's house!

Are you sure it was a legitimate email from them and not some fancy scam that knows when you've ordered something?

My first thought was that it was a scam, so I logged into my account (that I had just created) and low and behold the order had been cancelled. Just think it's really really weird.

I've sent an email to their customer services requesting clarification. I have decided that there's no way I would send a copy of my passport or DL to a random online company - regardless of their size or status. If I can't come to an agreement with them I'll just find a similar outfit from another retailer.

    It's just so weird!

    How weird!

It was only earlier this year that I shopped with them for the first time and I know for a fact I had separate billing and delivery addresses and they never asked me for that sort of info!

This would really worry me too. My mum ordered an amazon voucher for christmas but it never turned up. When she called to complain they could tell that it had been redeemed and what for, and the guy on the phone went all vague and got a manager to talk to her. It turned out the voucher had never been sent out and a member of staff had used the code to buy stuff. I definitely wouldn't send them anything!

My first thought would be around proof of identity for money laundering or something- but why would asos need it?

ive not bought from then in years but have never had to provide that- seems dodgy indeed.

It's not a scam email it really is true. Someone challenged asos about it this was back in 2012 though from what I could find on google. But apparently it is when a delivery address is different from a billing address they say this is how con artists work by having the two different addresses. I have an asos account - I signed up years ago however I kept both my addresses the same and I don't remember being asked for a statement or passport of drivers licence?

Thanks for all the detective work otters! I had a reply from their customer services last night to say that they can't verify all my information (what?) and wont progress the order without the documents they have requested - which apparently they will destroy immediately after verifying that I am me.

The way I see it I have two choices - 1. send them scans that have been heavily 'black markered' to rule out any important details 2. Shop somewhere else.

Really don't know if I can be bothered given that this is the first time I've ever tried to buy something from there in many years of internet shopping. Plus I got carried away and bought a shed load of clothes from Next last night - who seem quite happy to accept I am me.

Meh. It's so insignificant in the grand scheme of things but am please you all responded the way I did (as in "what?" followed by "I wouldn't send them anything it sounds dodgey".

It's so strange. I've been shopping with Asos for ages. Never had to give this info.

Did they say they needed to verify who you were to send to an alternative address?

I think you can do a pick up from a collect plus location if you don't want it delivered to your house. Will that work?
