Who was ruder?

Chicken, 2 February, 2009 at 18:46 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

I rang a family member to say happy birthday. Mid-way through the conversation she started speaking to someone her end and asking them why they put an item somewhere other than it's proper place. I twice said something along the lines of "i'm going to shoot off if you need to have a conversation with someone else" but the conversation continued so I hung up. I (don't think) I'd have done the same if the person I was talking to was in England but calling Oz from my mobile is a bit pricier. Someone my end said I was rude but I think I was justified. ? Didn't hear back from birthday girl.

She was. I can't stand it when people do this when they're on the phone up the street, never mind the other side of the world. It's not like you hung up straight away. You did give her a chance.

I dunno who wins on the roodness-ometer, but I would have done the same. I also hang up when people put me on hold to see who else is on the line. Or if anyone is eating while speaking on the phone to me.

I think the birthday girl was rude to start another conversation mid-phone call, especially if she knew you were ringing from the other side of the world. I'd have done the same as you but maybe we're both just rude people? ?

Gawd I hate it when people do that. My Mum does this to me all the time. Always yelling at my brother in the background about whether he has cleaned the rabbits out, tidied his bedroom etc etc, he back chats the convo goes on and I just wish I had the guts to slam the phone down. ?

    She was flipping rude!

    It's me Ruby Nard - I'm not Sare - I'm being tricksy.

To me the other person was being rude by starting another conversation. If she complains you were being rude for hanging up you could always just mutter something about a dodgy mobile signal. Did she call you back?

You weren't rude at all - you were justified! She was the rude one.

I have to agree with everyone else in that she was rude.

It drives me mental. My mum does it all the time to me, I'll be talking to her and she will just start talking to her husband I find myself shouting down the phone to get her attention.

My mum does this to me all the time (it seems to be a thing that 'mums' do) and it really winds me up so I can imagine how frustrating and annoying it must be to have this happen when you're paying a fortune to call the other end of the world. It's rude in my book and given the fact that you did offer to ring off but were ignored I think it's fair enough that you hung up. The other person was definitely ruder.?
