Who would I call to fix this?

MellyMoo, 24 August, 2010 at 15:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

We had a new bathroom fitted last year, a friend of my H's did it. Since then we have a problem with water coming through the floor and into our lounge whenever someone has a shower. It's not the shower leaking, it's where water gets onto the floor and then seeps through the floor somewhere.

Who would fix this? Surely a plumber only deals with leaking appliances, not a leaky floor. I'm desperate to get it fixed. We have tried to fix it ourselves and it's better (if you have a low power shower then it doesn't leak) but our downstairs doesn't look good with the water damage and we can't redecorate until this is completely fixed.

Who would deal with this type of thing?

Thanks.

I think it would be a plumber. The shower must be leaking somewhere surely, because your floor shouldn't be that wet after a shower? I presume you have a shower screen or curtain? Is it this that's not stopping the water getting on the floor? I'd call a plumber, explain the situation and see if they can deal with it. If not, they must be able to recommend who you should contact. I'd do it sooner rather than later though - my friend had a slow leak and one day the ceiling downstairs just bubbled and exploded and that was a big repair job for 2 rooms downstairs!

Yep. I agree. Call the plumber. They can only tell you that they cannot help and hopefully if they can't they will know who can.

Hope you get it sorted. x

Thanks both. My H is insistent that the ceiling won't fall down but I am very wary when taking a bath now.

I will try a plumber as my first port of call.

Definitely a plumber. The same happened to our shower last year. Water was getting through the tiles and seeping through the kitchen ceiling.

Ah, thanks IWO. How did they fix it? And was it expensive?

Well, the whole shower needed re-tiling (damn new builds - not only had they done a dodgy tiling job but they hadn't even bothered putting waterproof boards behind the shower so it was totally mouldy when they took everything out).

We actually used it as a good excuse to get the whole ensuite redone so yes, it was pricey (£3.5k) but it didn't need to be anywhere near that pricey had we just opted for the re-tiling. Don't know what the tiling alone would have cost, sorry.

Thank you! I think the water is coming purely through the floor as we don't get leaking when we have the shower on low power as less water gets on the floor.

At least, I hope that's the case!
