Why can't you put wrapping paper with the paper recycling ?

jelly baby, 7 December, 2008 at 20:07 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

I've just been reading the leaflet that came through the door about next years collections (yes, I am trying to avoid doing the million things that need doing). I noticed it said that you can't put wrapping paper in the recycling - why on earth not ? Surely it's paper the same as a catalogue or something. I don't understand.

    my recycling bin is getting all the christmas stuff this year like it did the previous years, why would that change in 2009?

    I think it probably means any of the fancy schmancy foil Christmas papers, which aren't really paper. Bog standard paper should be fine.

    There are some local authorities where wrapping paper is not collected at all, this is because wrapping paper is not accepted by some recycled paper mills. There are a number of reasons for this.

    What is it made from?

    The materials that go into making some wrapping paper result in it not always being accepted for recycling:

    • wrapping paper is often dyed, laminated and/or contains non-paper additives such as gold and silver coloured shapes, glitter, plastics etc which cannot be recycled;
    • some wrapping paper is very thin and contains few good quality fibres for recycling; and
    • a lot of wrapping paper has sticky tape attached to it which makes it very difficult to recycle.

    Our council says it's ok as long as sellotape is removed, and the paper isn't metallised or glittered.

    Thanks for the explanations. What legless posted does kind of make sense, just feels a bit wrong when they've spent all year promoting recycling to then put all that paper in the non-recycling bin.
