Wild bird question

Hawhaw, 20 June, 2008 at 12:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

A sparrow and a robin have been feeding the same young bird at our bird table, we think the bird is a young sparrow so why is the robin feeding it?

The young bird is the same size and shape as a small sparrow with speckled thrush type markings on it's chest.

I'm confused and it's hurting my head.

Sounds like it could be a young robin..? - they have speckled chests.

A bird that is half wood pigeon half magpie visits our garden for food. The front (head, neck and wings) are white pigeon colours and features, then it has a really long petrol blue, black and white tail like a magpie.

It could be a robin, but the chest markings are more pronounced. I think Mr Robin has been having liasons with Ms Sparrow.

I didn't know that birds cross bred. Sigh, I could sit and watch the birds for hours, they are especially enjoying fighting with the mealworms today.

This is a slightly younger Robin:

Interesting that they're both feeding it....any chance of a pic?

That's it! I haven't time to take a pic, I'm just off to work. Thanks KT

I'm still confused as to why the sparrow was feeding it. The baby was sat on the bird table and both birds were taking turns at feeding it.

I just had a quick google and found a topic on a bird forum about adults feeding different babies .. seems its unusual, but not unheard of, especially if the other bird has recently lost her own babies.

They don't. Sounds like a young robin to me too.
