Will you change your surname?

Big Apple, 11 July, 2011 at 19:22 Posted on Planning 0 86

When you get/got married will you/did you change your surname? If you did why and if you didn't why didn't you? Any grooms out there considered changing your name?

Just wondering!!

Yup - I will be - I'm not a fan of my surname, my OH's is much nicer (well not as unusual, more "generic"

We considered doubling it - and still haven't ruled it out - but initially we will follow tradition and she will have the honour of taking my surname.

I am changing my name, although amongst my married friends I will be the only one who has. It didn't even cross my mind to keep my surname tbh.

I'm not sure...looks like h2b will be keeping his name as is, no barrelling or anything.

I'm considering either keeping mine or double barrelling with his...don't know >_< oh well, still 9 months to decide!!

EDIT - realised I didn't say why originally! H2b wants to keep his surname as is as he's the last with that surname in his family. I don't want to change to his as I'd then have a purely English name and I want a surname that still reflects that I'm Chinese...

I will not change mine. Outdated patriarchy and entirely unnecessary (in the absence of children etc). Fully supported by boy. Smiley smile

Hmm not sure I want to take his family name at all, at the most I'll be double-barrelling. Our kids have double-barrelled surnames.

    Oh yess a deffo

I have had my surname for quite a few years, and basically fed up with it, so Kim and I agreed to change our surnames

Kim was a Barnes until recently, she thought it would cost a small fortune to change her surname, But she now has changed it to Sherwood, a tribute to her step dad who loved her as his own.

I will be taking Kims Surname the day we get married, and I so cant wait xx

I don't think so no...I said to the boy "WHat about you becoming a ******* like me?" he said no, and I think that kind of made up my mind. It's weird though, as I would quite like a fresh start and a new name symbolises that in some ways, but in these circumstances it would symbolise ownership and shared identity more perhaps. I have a long time to mull it over though.

I love my name and don't really like OH's name but I want the same name as our children when we have them so will be changing. Might double barrel on facebook etc so it doesn't seem like too big a change ?

Just a thought- Hitched is the most "googleable" webiste known to man. Your username is quite indicitive of who you are and you may not want to pop your OH's details on here as they are easiliy traced?!

On a brighter note- the old "will you change your name thread" often gets a bit heated- lets see how long before the H gods delete this one?

@Footlong- I am worried you have expressed too much of an opinion in your post- care to be removed?!

I'm sure if I'd have talked about "my woman" there would have been uproar...

I changed mine.. never actually considered not taking it. Despite being told by wee sis when we first started dating that I wasn't allowed to marry him because my name would be Cat Steven.. I hated my old surname, happy to be rid even if I am laughed at!

    and the gloves are off!

Stop being a twunt AJ- Footlong refers to her OH as "the boy" the same I refer to mine as "MrMini". Its a nickname, if you want to call MrsAJ "The woman" then go right ahead- as we discussed in our earlier gender debate no one [except you] really gives two hoots.

You have a real gender issue atm- whats going on?

And note the lack of 'my' in front... it's not a possessive description, more an affectionate term

It's a pet name for pity's sake... no derogatory meaning behind it whatsoever.

I feel that this is deliberately obtuse....

Personally I actually find 'OH' a bit much, I am NOBODY'S other half, and nobody is mine, I am one whole thank you very much....which I WHY I always use 'the boy' or 'M' in my posts, OH weirds me out. However, I realise that this is my own strange semantics - I'd hardly say that using OH was 'not right'!!

If you wanted to call your OH- "Hot Stuff" or "my lickle fluffy pumpkin" would that also be rules out? Or is it gender specific pet names you really have a beef with?

Yes I will and can't wait as my present name is my ex husbands name ! I will be going on honeymoon with my exes name , he is even in the back of the passport as NOK ! I think I can just put a sticker over that I will have to check . All feels a bit wierd Smiley sad But it is also awkward as I will have the same name as my stepchildren but not my own ! And his ex wife lives in the same town so there will be two of us ! I can't see any way around this tbh.

I only reclaimed my maiden name a couple of years ago (after divorce) and I am rather reluctant to lose it again. So I'm torn. My OH wants me to take his name, but it's a whole load of hassle to get it changed.

I think I'm going to use both, I'll use my maiden name at work, but get my passport changed.

    (I don't like double-barrelling - always sounds a bit pretentious to me!)

I don't think I will, no. I asked Mr DWC if he would change his name to mine and he said no. So therefore I don't see why I should change mine either. Plus i've worked very, very hard for my two degrees, so if i changed my name it feels like they belong to someone else and not me anymore. We've briefly discussed double barrelling my name or both of us doing it but I don't know what we'll do about it yet because Mr DWC isn't too keen on that either. Plus when we have kids i don't want to have a different surname to them so no idea how we'll solve that.

I plan to change mine, but it might take some time to do it through all the official channels. Don't like my surname much and I definitely wouldn't want to double barrel.

I will be. But I really dont want to lose my sirname. And I definitly dont want to go double-barrelled.

Problem for me, is if I do take his name, my full name will sound like - Van Gough!!!

I am already getting laughed at, and I haven't even taken his name yet!

I will be making mine double barrell. I was super close with my Nan and my surname was her name and when people hear it within the area I live the associate it with her. My H2B is happy with this
