Will your special touches be appreciated by everyone and do you care?

MOMB, 25 April, 2013 at 11:18 Posted on Planning 0 27

What are you doing on your special day that you feel reflects you and is special but might be viewed as a bit naff by others? Do you care or are you making the choices you want with gay abandon?

For myself: it's a second time wedding and we've both done the picture perfect hotel formal before so we've gone completely the other way with a circus skills workshop, bunting, ice cream van, crafts area, folk band, friends turning up with their instruments to jam in the bar, kids giving me away and doing readings. It really won't take much for it to go the wrong way and be a bit kitch, but it such a reflection of us, our relationship and our lives that we're doing it anyway. My Mum is saying nothing but I'm sensing her disapproval from 120 miles away!

So what are you 'doing anyway'?

There is a few things I have kept to myself about our wedding because I know people might think its a bit ... 'cheap' ?

I have been hand-stamping all of our table place settings - I like how they look! Its just a bonus they were cheap too.

We are doing a chocolate table plan, with chocolate bars with each place setting as we are both chocoholics.

We are doing a 'sharing' starter for the table rather than individual starters.

I am having a later wedding and having a BBQ outside (hopefully) instead of a ''day time meal'' and evening buffet. I knew straight away that i didnt want a sit down 3 course meal in a hotel room somewhere... i want a really relaxed chilled out day where our friends and family can drink, eat and be merry. maybe play a little 5 a side on the garden. and im having a ice cream cart for the evening so that takes care of desert. i know some people will think i have done it because of money but thats honestly not the issue. i just didnt want it and dont see why i should pay for it just so people wont say 'ooo look theres no sit down meal (disapproving looks)' lol. I have looked and searched for months looking at different options and i never felt happy until i finally decided to screw all the people who thought we were being cheap and have exactly what i want. Its MY day, IM paying for it so therefor I am having exactly what I WANT!!! lol

    xxxxxx

Without a doubt the special touches will be noted by your guests. My guest book is full of comments around the "little touches" we did for everyone and I think thats what made our wedding so us.

If anyone doesn't like it- sod 'em.

I was surprised at how much the little touches were noticed by guests. We've had thank you letters from guests and all have them have commented on the little touches. Even the evening guests mentioned how meticulously planned everything was, right down to the last detail. I really really didn't think people would notice the little bits and pieces, but they really did!

and if they don't like them? Tough! Anyway, most people are too polite to say so!

There are close friends and relatives who know me and my H2B well enough to pick up the little touches that are "us", already when discussing my plans with my mum, bridesmaid and closest friends the words "that's so you" have been used a million times. However, my "outlaws" don't have a clue who I really am or, in fact, who my H2B really is so I think a lot of our day will be rather shocking to them.

I'm embroidering all the names on the place settings. 160 guests so quite an undertaking. A third down with 4 months to go but I just wish people would RSVP. Hey ho. Come June I'll start nagging.

Also had making all the flowers for the table centres, all the bunting and decorations. My friends will notice this. OH's may well think we bought in loads of handmade stuff.

We're going to have little retro toys on the tables; magic tricks, aeroplanes, stuff like that. My mum thinks its ridiculous I'm hoping it'll break the ice and get people talking since there'll be a lot of people there who don't know each other. We'll see!

I'm wearing wings. Lol that's all I need to say.. My cutting cake is guna be a faerie castle and I'm having cupcakes with mini toadstools, woodland creatures and bugs on the top ^-^ Also heart shape cake pops which will look like faerie wands. For decs on the chair backs we're having willow hearts with thank you notes and a treble clef charm for guests to take away. And solid oak slices for table centers with freeze dried petals and ivy. Our theme (if you haven't guessed already) is woodland faeries with a hint of music ?

For the reception we're having a faerie/gothic themed masquerade ball. My Nan thinks it'll look like a pantomime lol so it might but it'll be all MY doing ? Not bad...

I do think the special touches get noticed. The last wedding I went to I loved the tea bar, the potted herbs as table centres/favours, and the hand made robins as cake toppers. All gorgeous.

The things we're doing DIY - tea cup flowers, table plan, cake buffet - I'm fairly certain will be noticed and appreciated by guests.

I think the little touches are the main part of the day (other than the ceremony) that reflects you as a couple. We are making everything ourselves. The mix of the 'me' things and 'OH' things are quite funny, but that is what makes it us. To the point that I am making name places by cutting out clay with different shape cookie cutters (teapot, teacup, birds, cupcakes and hearts), stamping names on and varnishing them, and OH is naming all the tables after the Invincible Football Team (I am sure I should know what this is) and making a table plan from a mini wooden table football!! I think that is the best bit! A wedding is supposed to be about you as a couple in every way!!

I'm starting to worry now because our theme/detail isn't really about us as a couple! The other half is an x box freak & follows Aston Villa. I'm not really into anything other than socialising & music/live gigs. I didn't want a claret & blue wedding. I didn't want to name the tables after players or x box games or having anything relating to footy or the x box lol. My eclectic musical taste will be reflected in the play list for the evening do. All I knew was I wanted something a bit different & it all to be fairly relaxed. The OH left it to me & my Sis & we both loved the whole rustic/woodland theme. When I showed the OH everything he liked it too & that's what we're doing. The colours are chocolate, orange & champagne, mainly because that's what goes nice with all the woody stuff. I guess the style of the wedding i.e. relaxed & informal is totally us. We're having a hot & cold buffet for the wedding breakfast & BBQ food in the evening. We're also have beer & cider on the tables rather than wine.

I'm not sure I'm doing anything particularly special or anything that might be viewed as naff. I did want to have a sand ceremony but it's not allowed whilst the registars are there apparently! I think I might make a montage of pics to be played on the big screen in the evening room whilst the BBQ is served. That might be seen as a bit naff I guess. I also want to do something to remember loved ones lost. Anyone got any ideas that aren't too upsetting/naff?!

We're having an ice cream trike, mainly for mine and OH's benefit ? I won't be bothered if no one notices that its "special", as we'll know that it is!

It is nice to hear from OMs that their guests did notice and appreciate things they did though ?

I hope our 'special touches' are noticed (although that sounds like something you should mention to the Police...)

We're putting playing cards and dice on the tables for the evening, as our friends often play Yahtzee when we all get together. We're also putting mini colouring books and pencils on some people's place settings, after an impromptu colouring-in competition broke out on our RSVP cards!

I'm putting a half-bottle of gin at my sister's place setting, as she doesn't drink wine. And we might put a couple of 'beer tokens' at the place settings of our friends who don't drink wine, as well.

I've already had my mother raise her eyebrows at a few of our touches eg twine tied gyp bouquets for my bms and apple crates for the cake and sweetie buffet!

We're also having a quiz between courses! I hope people will notice but don't mind if they don't, it's the things we want.

The special touches really do get noticed. We had a steel band which went down a storm, simple things like flip flops for the ladies, toiletries in the loo's, bowls of chocolates dotted around, wishing wells instead of guest book and even our chimney sweep who did it for free to advertise his business. All of our guests loved it especially the overseas guests.

My OH is a tree surgeon and I am a Park Ranger, wedding is in a woodland. Instead of having a cake we are have a tiered stack of silver birch logs decorated with ivy simulating the cake- our 'cutting the cake' will be us splitting the top log with an axe. Some people probably think we are mental but I think its fab and very us Smiley smile

They have stopped doing weddings because locals complained about the noise and litter left. I went to the council originally and asked who I needed permission from. They sent me to the Staunton Country Park team over on the farm side and they flat out refused to even consider it Smiley sad I wanted a smallish marquee in the wooded bit rather than on the grass in full view of everyone but it was a complete and harsh no Smiley sad It's a special place for my partner and I - we used to go on walks there at the beginning of our relationship, when pregnant and now take our son whenever the sun is out. It would have been perfect and so fitting with our theme Smiley sad Ended up having to chose somewhere affordable as time was passing so quickly so booked the Innlodge luckily with just 6 months to go!

Instead of having cut flowers as centre pieces I'm planning on buying some pretty pot plants instead. Then people can take them home at the end of the night, instead of the flowers just going to waste. Even though I've told my mum this on many an occasion, she still keeps pointing out various flower arrangements to me!!
