Winter Soup?

*Mini*, 15 February, 2012 at 18:48 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

When I was little my mum used to make something she called winter soup- I cant find a recipe anywhere so wondering if any of you ladies have it?

It had mince, carrots, potatoes, celery and onions in it I think from memory- anyone have any clues?

No idea M, although I can recommend the HT method:

Whack it all in a pan, go and watch Eastenders and then hope for the best when you return after 30 mins.

I have never heard of winter soup but today I have made a 'spicy root vegetable soup' not only is it delicious (if i say so myself ?) but it's syn free for anyone doing the Slimming World diet.

Carrot, parsnip, onion, potato, small swede, pearl barley, veg stock, cayenne pepper and salt & pepper to taste.

I just buy a casserole pack, £1 from Asda

Never heard of Winter Soup, but probably be easy enough to make. Brown some mince off, drain off any excess fat that comes out, then add the chopped veg, any pulses and stock and simmer.

I love soup, don't follow a recipie for any of it, just bung everything in pot boil, always turns out fine! I also love adding butter beans to soup, make it so much more filling! Some veg like Pumpkin etc. I'd roast first too, boil with stock then blitz.

For more 'creamy' soups like Leek and Potato I cook onion and leek in marg, add some flour to make a rue, then add some milk and stock to make a creamy base, then simmer with potatoes in.

Yummy, easy and so so cheap, did I say I love soup?
