Wolf of Wall Street...

Chucklevision, 23 August, 2014 at 21:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 22

So I'm sitting down with the OH watching Wolf of Wall Street and I'm finding it pretty hard to watch. I'm by no means a prude but I've found some of the scenes re: drug taking & sex in it pretty gross.

Anyone else seen it? X

Ha ha. I too have done that except it was the Swedish version of the second Girl with the dragon tattoo book - just me & dad. It was stupid of my really I had read the books so knew what was coming. I had to leave the room for one particularly graphic sex scene.

Not seen this particular film but remember a very naive ddpunk sitting down to watch requiem for a dream with my mum. Sooo awkward,.. Especially the moment my dad chose to walk in!

I'm glad it isn't just me. I had heard it was really good but I just found the film offensive & repulsive.

I thought it was ace. And after all, isn't the point of the film to show you how excessive, how repulsive, how arrogant, how offensive, how sleazy it all was? If you're disgusted, I think they've done a good job!

I really enjoyed it - thought v entertaining. I also quite like movies where the main character is not someone you sympathise or empathise with.

one question on it, which I wasn't sure and I'd like to ask

**********spoiler alert********** in case you haven't seen it.

The part where LD wears a wire and he holds up a note to Jonah saying something like "don't say anything to incriminate yourself - I'm wearing a wire"

When the FBI come and get him the next day, they hold up a note. Does that mean Jonah was working with the police?

    Yep, Jonah/Donnie turned him in.

Interesting factoid: Jonah Hill got paid £36k (before tax) for that film (compared to LDC's £6m). He was so desperate to work with Scorsese, he accepted minimum wage.

ha I thought it was that but when I asked my H, and later my parents who had also watched it, they were all like *ahhh, don't know* so it all seemed to pass them by.

I did know that about Jonah Hill - but didn't realise it was as low as £36k (who gets out of bed for that these days?) I also appreciate your dollar to sterling conversion

I wasn't 100% how they got the note... I enjoyed the film, but then I love older LD, esp in this kind of role! I find the idea of a life like that ridiculous and interesting in equal measure.

However, I do agree that it was REALLY long... although I didn't notice as much as I sometimes do. I have a really bad habit of watching the little clock on the DVD player sometimes, but I only really looked a couple of times.

I can completely understand some people finding it a bit OTT, I just enjoyed laughing at how mad these peoples' lives are/were...

I'm in the love it camp, I (not so) secretly think it would be an incredibly fun (albeit short) life to lead.

Only watched it last night actually and loved it! the acting was superb and some very funny lines in it. I loved the scene at the end with the FBI agent on the subway, looking around maybe just wondering what his life would have been like if he had gone the other route. Very clever.

I watched it with OH who raved about how good Leo was in it.

I wouldn't say that I hated it, but I did come away from the film feeling that it glorified drug and alcohol abuse and felt very uncomfortable. It seems wrong that Jordan Balfour lost all that money, conned so many people and because Leo is in the film, its all okay.

Absolutely loved it - one of my fave films of last year. I have a short attention span for movies and it captivated me throughout!

I loved it. I love Leo. He makes you believe his character. There were moments that made me cringe, but that's the point.

He gets better with age. Didnt fancy him at all in Titanic, but adored him in Inception.

I don't think it was glorifying it, it was telling the story. Nooone is saying it is ok but that was the reality of the story and they were telling it how it was. All the obscene excess was true for a lot of people involved in the stock market in the 80's especially.

I loved it. It reignited my flame for Leo but extinguished it for Matthew McConaughey.
