Woolworths gone

neffi, 26 November, 2008 at 18:01 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 43

I feel quite sad about this, I grew up buying my first 99p chart singles on vinyl in woolworths.

I also bought my nephews their christmas gift cards in woolies the other day. Stoopid me.

Yikes! I was only saying to Dad this morning about it potentially going under. I skinted myself this month buying P's birthday gift there because it was the only shop to stock it. Very sad.

Bugger about the gift cards for you though.

Where will I go for my pick and mix now?!

No seriously, it's a shame but it is an indication of how our shopping habits have changed.

lol, I know, it's not as if I didn't know this was likely to happen. Not a lot of money thank goodness.

I still shop in woolies a lot - kids presents, chocolate, cheap birthday cards etc. The BBC described it as the working class department store, lol.

I thought it was a bit odd when I looked at the website earlier as they only do CD's/DVD's/video games now!

If you've still got the gift card, can you not go to the shop and buy something now? I've just got back from our local Woolies and they were very much up and running today.

I think the plan is to try to find a buyer, in which case I think the receivers will want to keep it open, won't they? Or has there been more news on the last hour? (This was at 5.30pm)

I guess I assumed the doors will be closed tomorrow but if they're open I'll definitely be spending the gift cards.

RIP Woolies, shop of my childhood.

As much as I'd love to believe that, I suspect that Woolies is worth more as a collection of prime real estate than as a chain of shops. They own most of their stores, and many of them are in asolute prime high street locations. I fear they'll be sold off to the highest bidder (probably Tesco Metro, M&S food et all)

When i was in woolies yesterday the staff were handing out 20% discount friend and family vouchers to everyone and saying they're valid until sunday. they were telling everyone to come and take advantage of the 3 for 2 offers they've got on all christmas stuff, chocolate, kids clothes etc and get the 20% on top of that

    i love woolies.

My hubby works at Woolies London HQ, we are lead to believe that Woolies will continue trading over the Christmas period.

I'm really sad about it. I used to work for the company who did their supply chain management and used to work in their head office 1 day a week. I heard a quote on the radio earlier saying that they sold lots of things but specialised in nothing which I think might be true.

I'm surprised they're in trouble, maybe it's just the town I live but Woolies is still really popular here, I go in there most days i'm in town, granted I'm usually cutting through to M&S but they have lots of bargains. Now i'm wondering if that's why their fridge was empty last week when I was dying for a sarnie. Maybe Ginsters have pulled out lol!

I love Woolies. It was part of my childhood.

I was going down tomorrow to get a couple of Christmas presents, I probably still will. It is a local safe bet for getting most things you want, and if it closes it will be sadly missed (and probably left vacant the same as the Sainsburys local until they decided they didnt want to be local anymore ?)

The Woolies in our local big shopping centre closed down last year very suddenly, and I was quite shocked as I hadn't realised till then things were bad - and I was quite gutted as I liked it for toys etc, and it always seemed busy.

What a shame, one of the oldest names on the High Street too. And how gutting for their staff, what a thing to be facing 4 wks before Christmas ?

I just brought a couple of presents in there tonight, it was our first late night shopping, big lights switchon type thing in town, so took the girls down there. I got this fab vehicle set for my godson, its huge - has a motorbike, jeep, boat and something else in there, down from £40 to £20, and then I was handed a 20% off voucher as I queued up! So got it for £16!!!

    Now I know why☹️

According to the Times online they'll be trading till after Christmas.

What a shame though, a shop from my childhood too.

A Woolies manager that I know once told me that a local store operates at a loss for 10 months out of the year (mainly due to the rent) and makes all of its profit over Christmas. Mr BW (based on this info) was saying last night that it would be stupid for Woolies to close before Christmas is done.

Spoke to our friend last night who said he will be sticking with the company to the end as he feels that as a manager he should be putting a brave face for the other staff, makes me feel horrible knowing that so many people will be spending Christmas wondering if they will have a job in the new year.

They were handing out those leaflets for friends and family in ours last week too , i still didnt buy anything , i used to spend loads there but tom is older now and the toys are too young for him , also our town is going down hill so fast its unbelievable i did look at opening a second shop there but its really bad , i dont think we will have a town left soon apart from chippies and charity shops and banks

a huge retail park has opened a mile outside the town and everyone tends to go there since m&s, new look , dp's and bhs and places have moved there

Woolies was a dinosaur. They refused to move with the times or update their image.

Its sad that people will lose their jobs, and a worrying indicator of the state of "the high-street", but I can't shake the feeling it was just their time.

I will miss woolies - we have a decent sized one in walking distance from home - it was fab for quick replacements of school uniform when the kids had destroyed or outgrown theirs.... if it isn't replaced with something similar [which i doubt it will be] it will mean a trip to town which will take up a weekend day and involve more cash. Gah.

can't even nip down this week to see what is on offer cos i have vomity children around me.....

An old family friend has worked for Woolworths since he was 18, he's 40 now. I can't imagine how him, his wife and children are feeling right now, 4 weeks before Christmas. Poor sods.

I like Woolies, always have done.

I'm surprised at how many people on this thread actually still shop in there. I can't remember the last time I shopped in our "local" Woolies (Brum town centre) - if ever. I think I went to Woolies in my childhood but certainly not since.

I was wondering whether WHSmith might be of a similar ilk? All it's merchandise you can get in other stores - it doesn't specialise in anything. I mean, it's more "upmarket" than Woolies but I don't think it's moving with the times either.

I have a feeling we're going to lose more "favourites" from the High St in the coming months. Anyone care to suggest the next casualty?
