Work issues - WWYD

ruby slipper, 23 April, 2008 at 16:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 22

I work in a secondary school as an office manager. My school is closing in July and amalgamating with another, then moving into a brand new building as a new school. A few weeks ago I applied for the Business Manager job and was succesful. My contract as Business Manager starts in August.

The Headteacher is now expecting me to take on many responsibilities as the Business Manager in the planning and prep for the new school and keeps sending various people my way who say "R says I should speak to you about this as you're the Business Manager".

Thing is I'm not the Business Manager until August, nor am I getting the salary of the Business Manager (which is quite a lot more than I'm on now)

At a meeting a couple of weeks ago she was asking me to sort out some things as Business Manager and I sort of joked and said "so will you be paying me my new salary now then" and she just laughed and said "no"

I am the sort of person who just gets on with things but I can't help be a bit narked that I'm not being paid for the job I'm doing now (and bear in mind I'm also still doing my normal job for the school I work for)

Would you kick up a fuss about it or just carry on?

I can see why you find it annoying but I think you have to look at it as positively as you can - at least you will be well prepared when you start your new job, and you will know what is going on.

Ifd you didn't work there already, they wouldn't be contacting you for work would they?!

BUT, I would probably just get on with it anyway. At least it'll build up some brownie points that can be claimed at a late date if need be ?

I *think* I would get on with it, but would be looking at getting formal sign off from my line management on any decisions I felt merited it.

I do feel I will just get on with it, but I guess I don't want to feel like I might be being a bit of a mug.

I would just suck it up, and I'm not normally the type to say that, believe me!

Presumably this stuff needs doing and if you don't do it, who will? Although your contract should start now if you're needed in post and that's your employer's fault, I think it'll be better all round if you just get on with it!

I'd be a bit fed up too but look on the bright side, if you weren't being involved in your new post now other people might be making decisions for that role that you might not like. At least this way you have control and there won't be any surprises when you start.

Put it this way, I know an office manager who works at the local high school who is on 34k a year (plus benefits and bonus).

I assume your new role won't pay much more than that, so quit whining!

the monetary amount has got jack squat to do with anything. i d be pissed off too. however, under the circs, its not that long away, and if the workload does get very onerous, she can raise it though i would keep quiet for now.
