(pf), 28 July, 2009 at 20:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

The last week or so i have had sharp stabbing pains in my bottom, and bleeding. bright red blood not old stuff. and today i wiiped and had a worm. now i know how to treat the worms as the kids have had them before so i will pop to chemist tommorrow morning and get some tablets but what about the bleeding? is this normal? i havent been scratching it or anything and its there evey time i wipe even if i havent had a bowel movement.

should i go to the dr or see how it goes after a tablet for the worms? i feel dirty yuk!

To be on the safe side i would go to the docs. i am sure its caused by the worms but i would get it checked. i had worms as a kid, not very nice.

    xx

Firstly lots of sympathy coming your way - that does not sound nice! I agree with Claires, get yourself over to the Docs.

    What kind of worms? Threadworms?

Bleeding is not usual with worms and is a perfectly acceptable thng to see your gp with.

    Firstly, don't be embarrassed.

I've had threadworms a few times, I think because I work in a school and because I have children myself. A couple of stats to make you feel better. At any time 40% of primary age children will have worms, and the eggs can survive invisibly for a fortnight on surfaces. Given that, it's no wonder they are easy to catch.

I've never had bleeding though, just very itchy, so I think you'll be absoutely right to go to the GP. Was it a small white worm, like cotton or something else?

Yes thats the one sare. i have had it before and so have the kids but never bled before. i only noticed it tonight and i always look after wiping (yuk) and had the pain and bleeding for a week or more. just to clarify the bleeding is only on tissue after i wipe but its like a period spotting rather than a dot IYSWIM

The orange flavoured tablets are less vile that the banana flavoured medicine - does that help at all on the worms issue?

Have had them a few time courtesy of the grott box that is my oldest (I assume!) - never had bleeding with them though. Agree with everyone who says get that checked out.

The bleeding could have been caused by a tear from scratching if you have been itching. It is probably related to the worms and they can be uncomfortable especially if you have had them for a while without realising. I'd probably just check with your GP anway.

Can I be a complete numpty and ask why it is that kids get worms?

Seahag, I would presume its because they are in such close contact in school and the eggs can be so easily spread.

Also kids tend to scratch their bottoms, thus transfering the eggs?
