Would I be mental to order a dress I can't try on?!!!

BeckyBunny, 21 December, 2011 at 20:37 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hi all, this is my first post and I need some serious advice. I am getting married in october 2012 and I have totally fallen in love with this Maggie Sottero dress (Isadora Marie).

http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?keywordText=isdaora+marie&keywordType=any&page=0&pageSize=15&style=J1419

I think its GORGEOUS but the problem is that Im a size 22 (UK) and so am finding it really hard to find ANY dresses to try on properly, let alone this one. I HAVE been to several shops and they have been very helpful and I have been lucky enough to try on lots, some of which I have "really liked" but nothing where I have cried and gone "its the one!".. Everyone keeps telling me I will just "know" when I find the one and so far I havent felt that way.. I have been on the maggie sottero website and got the list of stockists for this dress and emailed EVERY single store asking if they have this one.. Only 3 have replied saying yes, 2 of which are in a size 8, and one of which is in a size 14, neither of which I will fit into in any way shape or form. I then re-emailed all the stores asking if any of them would be prepared to order me in a sample dress in my size but all of them came back to me saying that the standard sample size dresses that maggie Sottero sends out are a size 8! And apparently the ONLY way I can order this dress in, is if I were to actually buy it in my size and then HOPE that it looks nice..

My problem is that even though I have tried other dresses on (about 15-20 in total), none of them I have liked as much as this one and all I can keep thinking about is "the skirt isnt as nice as the Maggie Sottero one," or "the lace is not the same as the maggie sottero one".. its driving me MENTAL. I have even been and tried on several dresses that I didnt like as much but did have the same sillouhette as the Maggie Sottero one, just to see if the shape suits me and it does (see links below for the similar shaped dresses)

And now all I can think is that Im ALWAYS going to be thinking about this dress until I can physically put it on so maybe I should just order it and be done with it?

What are you thoughts? Am I crazy? Could I sell it do you think if I don't like it?

Can you ask a shop to order it in in your size?? they normally charge about £25-50 but get the money back if you buy it.. i can't believe they only order in a 8 which is a load of crap as my dress i tried on wasn't!! it was a 14

Maggie dresses are gorgeous but then i'm bias being a maggie bride

Thanks, but as i said I already asked all the suppliers if they would do this and they all came back and said that although they would be happy to order me a "sample" of the dress, the sample was a standard size 8 and there was nothing they could do about the size.. apparently for this particular designer you can't order a sample in your size if you are bigger than a size 8! lol!

Hi, Could you try on the size 14 to get an idea of what it looks like?

I think you will always think of that dress until you have seen it in the flesh if you order another dress.

I did the same with a maggie sottero. Tried on about 20-30 other dresses. Similar in style but then I tried on the one that I fell in love with on her website (2 sizes too small) and it took my breath away and bought me to tears.

As it turns out, the one I have ordered is smaller than my normal size of an 18 as it did actually come up quite big.

Let us know what you decide to do. Good luck x

I, like you tried on LOADS of dresses, not finding the one (i didnt even have one to compare it to) but finally found one i love at a wedding fair, it fit perfectly and that was part of the reason I got it, a dress looks and feels better when it fits properly.

So not to be the devil on your shoulder, because there is no denying it is a risk, I would be tempted to say do it!

(but have a back up plan in case you don't love it as much as you expect - there are loads of shops that will help you sell it on, after i'm done i'm thinking of using SWOON)

    good luck x

I don't think you're mad. What I would suggest though is trying to try on a dress in a very similar style in your size. Don't worry about colour, embellishments etc - focus on the style and cut. If another, similar, dress suits you then chances are this will too.

It's a gorgeous dress by the way. Stunning.

BTW I just checked out your dresses and they are all gorgeous. My fave is actually the 3rd one on the fairytailbridal website. I am having a little bit of a wobble about my own dress now as I love these ?

Just a little thing that I did notice though the Maggie Sottero dress has a higher waistline than the other 2 if these are the one's that you have tried on?

Go for it! You've been sensible and tried on similar style / cut in the right size.

If the size 14 is near you, it might be worth going to see it in the flesh; I say this because I am currently a size 16-18 and was very specific on the dress style that I wanted, and one shop I went in gave me a size 8 to try ? Obviously it wouldn't do up even a little bit, but I could get it on enough to see the style on me.

Also, when I found 'the' dress, the skirt wasn't 100% right. The same designer made another dress with the PERFECT skirt (but I didn't like the bodice) and we arranged for them to make me a bespoke dress, with the bodice of one and the skirt of another. I also went for the dress is ivory and embellishments in bright red so I am a little bit EEK about ordering a dress that is basically from my imagination!! At least you've seen a picture of yours!

I am a bridal shop owner and whilst I don't stick Maggie I can vouch that they are one of the few bridal designers who are generous with their sizes, on that basis I would encourage you to go see the 14 and have a go at trying it on. I have a dress in the shop that is a lace up size 14 and due to the cut of the dress I have had it on customers who have ordered it in size 30

Retailers can pick dresses for their shop in any size (we buy them) but to borrow from Maggie you can only have what they use for samples (photo shoots, fashion shows) and they will be a smaller size)

Thank you all for the good advice.. I went today to the Wimbledon Store where the size 14 dress is and even just LOOKING at it, I knew it was the one. the fabric was gorgeous and the cut was amazing, the embellishments were beautiful. Then the shop assistant suggested I TRY to get it on and somehow, magically, she managed to get it on me! She used a panel to make it fit, but I guess because the skirt is made of layers of gathered tulle, there was a lot of room in the skirt so I was able to get a brilliant idea of what it will look like and it was GORGEOUS! So I ordered it there and then! WOOOOO!!!! Here are some piccies I took of the dress close up (didnt get any of me in it, but it looked nice)
