Would you go to the doctor (TMI)

spacecadet_99, 24 November, 2008 at 09:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

I've had diarrhoea (sp?) for nearly a week now. It's low grade, I'm not chained to the toilet or anything, but it's not going away and it's at least a couple of times a day. I feel relatively well in myself, but I got headachey and tired on Saturday which I'm pretty sure was dehydration, so yesterday I was drinking pretty much constantly in an effort to stop that happening again.

My question is, is there a point at which you would go to the doctor with this? Is there a period of time, or would it be when it started to make you feel unwell, or lose weight (I'm assuming I will start to lose weight through water loss if nothing else?). It seems such a daft thing to go for if it's not making me ill, but if it goes on much longer I think I will start to be worried. I'm not a person who generally gets ill (coughs and colds aside) so this seems unusual for me.

Sorry for such a grim topic first thing in the morning!

I'd give it a few more days (unless you're struggling to get to the loo on time). I've had a funny tummy all week too, as has Mr Nora and one or two others I know. I haven't felt ill with it either.

Can you get to the chemist and get some Diorylite (god only knows how to spell that). It'll replace your salts and keep you hydrated.

I probably wouldn't, but I'm not sure that is the best course of action.

I would leave it another week I think.

Sorry to hear that your not feeling great.

I was once told by a doctor that if you are suffering with a runny tummy the best thing you can do is drink coke and eat salty crisps as you'll get the sugars you need, rehydrated and the salt which you'll be losing.

Ah, sounds like there is a bug doing the rounds then. I'm not having an issue getting there in time but the need can be quite pressing when it comes! I'll get some coke and salty crisps then and hold fire for a bit longer. If I did lose a bit of weight through not absorbing food properly, it would be no bad thing anyway ?

    Thanks!
